  • During the successful British invasion of Java in 1811, Raffles found the plamost overgrown in volcanic ash & jungle 1814!

  • It wasn't raffles, but a surveyor from the British army (forgot his name) but the word "found" is condescending. people in the area knew about it, obviously. Raffles talked to people around the area to get info on the place. It is though not cared by the Yogya Sultanate or the local people.

  • if it weren't for Raffles it would have been found a lot later.

  • how could it be found, when locals knew of its existence even before Raffles set foot on Java?

  • well the fact that Raffles had money & a force to go in & find it.

  • if raffles hadn't 'found' it, somebody else would. he's totally inconsequential. like all the other british on java.

  • well it was a British colony for a few years..

    which is very nice.

  • Well then, to be fair (to the surveyor), we can say he pioneered the saving of borobudur: This should serve as a slap in the face of those (then) decadent javanese sultanate.

  • for god sake, the reason why borobudur became a monument was the result of a new modern fetish for the past that started in the 19th century and was then conjoined with nationalism in the 20th century. IT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED ANYWAY!! If not under Raffles, then under the Dutch, or under Soekarno or Yudhoyono. What's more important is the implied idea that founding a lost temple (that is NOT LOST) is somehow more important that the fact that it was the JAVANESE THAT MADE THEM.

  • @kewlkewl12 no, it was the malays

  • other similar heritage sites like angkor wat in cambodia, sukhothai & ayutthaya in thailand are worth for visit. Unfortunately the Bamian Buddha statue was destroyed by evil taliban in afganistan.

  • Bamian Buddha is indanger or badly damaged in afganistan. But if you ever go there it is worth a visit.

  • My grand parents are from indonesia and I live in Holland I love borobudur because I love tempels

  • great one ....

Guys lets give him a big clap. If one guy is trying to do something on BUDDHA and people are criticizing "How to pronounce Borobudur"...it's shameful... at least for a Hindu like me.

Please come to my South India...you will find lots of interesting temples there.

  • Thank you my friend you are too kind. And yes, I will come to South India to visit and film your temples. Peace be with you.

  • how come your guide was speaking in French? Parlez vous français aussi?

  • probably only because the primitive religions were even worse than Islam

  • erm which primitive religions were you referring to?

  • if u know nothing about javanese ppl

    just "shut up"

  • only great and rich civilizations able build so cute and beautifull building like borobudur temple.

  • Please learn how to properly pronounce "Borobudur."

  • Ahahaha yes he made it sound more like 'bro-b'dur'.. hahahaha...

It's supposed to be bo-ro-bu-dur, and if you ever have to put an accent anywhere, place it on the last syllable... 'dur'.

  • its called an accent

  • awesome! I just learned about borobudur from a trivia book I've been reading. I think it is the only foreign place I would like to someday visit!

  • How was this affected by last year's earthquake? I know the other place nearby was severely damaged but I heard Borobodur was relatively unscathed. Any more info on that?

  • Borobudur tells the story of Sudhana from the Hua-yen (Flower Garland) sutra. He visited 52 teachers in his quest for enlightenment. Like the Stations of the Cross, as the pilgrim walks around and up the temple, he takes the same journey as the brave bodhisattva Sudhana.

  • I want to see the first stage. The one that tells the secret of hell. Anyway, Borobudur is my favorite place in the world! I can sit under the tree and look at it for hours and hours! Then, the toppest stupa is not finished! Something amazing should be put on there to show it greatest stupa in full!!

  • The spreading of Islam in Indonesia without any single war, is the great evidence that Islam is a peace religion. Because Indonesian people converted to Islam by their own choices, not because of fear, or anything else.

  • u just dont know that islam is bad religion spread out hatred.

  • Hi guys ,

I am an Indian , Hindu & Bramhim. Once upon a time ( late 16th Century Majapahit Dynasty) Indonesia used to be a Hindu country. Islam came to Indonesia from west part of India , Land of Hindus.

Indonesia changed only because of economical reasons . As a Hindu I proud to say that I spent my 2.7 years in Indonesia. They will be no need of God if God produces more and more Indonesians .Love you guys

  • othx u. i've been there too.

  • that was b4 muslims arrived and conquered it but i swear those borobudur steps they're a killr

  • You are wrong. Javanese kings voluntarily converted to Islam, and Muslim Javanese ruled the island, and no foreign power conquered them until the Dutch came to colonize the country. Learn the history kid!

  • yer tru i shoud b ashamed i don't noe my own countries history

  • Budhism-Hinduism has been a big influence in Indonesia.
