  • This is streaming on netflix now. Huzzah!

  • I missed the chance to see this when it was in town (only hearing about its showing an hour prior to it starting) - When is it supposed to be on Netflix/XboxLive again? I know I got an email about it at some point... NEED TO SEE IT!

  • how can i watch thissss!?

someone needs to upload a torrent...

  • there isn't a disclaimer about sarah being in this trailer, what is she doing here anyhow, she totally disrupted my mf fandom hipster mentality

  • :)

  • *I /will/ watch this movie. I /will/ watch this movie. I /will/ watch this movie.*

  • Saw this on Saturday. I went with my wife and friends who are big MF fans, but I hardly know their music so I went into the flick with no opinion MF. This movie seems to be made by a fan (the director had a Q&A after) for fans. I didn't learn all that much about them or understand why Stephen is a "genius", etc. He seems pretty aloof and kind of miserable. The movie, as admitted by the director, has no real story. It's just a factual little docu about Stephen and Claudia mostly. 2/4 stars.

  • steve is a clown i no u cant write better then roger waters and if u can even at this day n age then wow u r full of urself.and u no wut i no u kudnt even rt doper then daniel johnson.uuuuuuuggggggghhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @handz4earz

Do you look at the screen when you type or do you just close your eyes, flail your arms and hope for the best?

  • Is that Neil Gaiman at 0:30?

  • like seriously....try making a single disc "best of MF" cd and there's a very good chance you'll be frustrated. you always hear about "papa was a rodeo" and "all my little words" (which are great songs), but you rarely hear about the other million really good songs like "deep sea diving suit," "saddest story ever told," "when you were my baby," "why i cry," etc. oh, and there's his solo stuff and the future bible heroes and the 6ths, both bands he writes great music for.....amazing.

  • it's almost exhausting to think about the number of super-catchy songs that this man has written and recorded. amazing.

  • *excited*

  • this may sound stupid but I have such an exaggerated, almost-worshiping view of Merritt and his work I'm a little bit hesitant to pick this up.

It reminds me of when I was in high school and I absolutely loved Mazzy Star until I saw and watched a few interviews with Hope Sandoval. I couldn't hear their music the same way again.

  • omgomgomg need to see!!! ...

  • I cannot WAIT for this. UGH!

  • Aw, Nonesuch is giving the Fields a hard time...

Of course they are. Majors don't get what Stephen Merritt does. They get that he could sell records, after all the press for 69 Love Songs, so they bought them.

Merge, on the other hand, understood The Magnetic Fields.

Should've stayed at Merge. Spoon and the Arcade Fire have each had much more exposure than the Fields have ever had since leaving an indie label and signing with a major.

    It's just really, really sad.

  • do want!

  • It's looks like a great film.Hey Stephin, i wouldn't worried if some cabby doesn't know you name. When Peter Gabriel calls you a "great american songwriter", you pretty much have made it in this world.

  • As a long time fan of Stephin Merritt and the Magnetic Fields i can't wait to see this film.

  • Saw it last night in SF. Really fantastic.

  • Wowser, looks great. But it damn well better have at least one live concert uninterrupted with talking and shit. The new live show is amazing.

  • You ARE missing something!

  • @akrulla I guess you should keep listening to the Back Street Boys then.

  • Dude, way to go attacking my tastes in music. I was merely making an observation, not trying to offend anyone. Thanks.

  • Stephin Merritt has been my favourite singer since I was ten years old when I first heard Scream & Run Away on the Lemony Snicket audiotape. He's just amazing. He's an intriguing person and a genius songwriter. I'm really looking forward to seeing him live for the second time!! I need to see this documentary, or my life wouldn't be complete.

  • Oh this is lovely, I can't wait

  • My life is now worthless without watching this film.

  • @hanuma2 You and me both.

  • Once again, YouTube confirm my lack of faith in people.

I am excited to see this film. I have really enjoyed Merritt's work in the years since I've discovered it. Probably the film shows some good sides of Merritt and some bad ones, because, since he's a human being, he's bound to have both. And that's as should be. He's a musician. He doesn't have to make me fall in love with him. He has to make me fall in love with the music. And he has.

Haters can kindly move to the left.

  • Well, at least you concede he's a great composer. Though no fucking way covers are better than the originals.

  • I was at the Montreal show last night. As much as I love the Magnetic Fields, It was not a good show. He obviously doesn't enjoy performing live and as soon as it looked like the show might pick up a bit, they killed the momentum. No flow at all. He's a fantastic songwriter, though.

  • Oh, what a dream come true!! I'm entering Stephin Merrit's apartment!! I wondered for years about what it would be like. I'm serious. I love Stephin very much.

  • I absolutely cannae wait

  • This looks great. Can't wait. xoxoxo

  • Hmm... As much as I love MF if this is 2 hours of Merritt worship I'm not interested.

  • @henryyydarkkk Way to keep snobbery alive!

  • Just calling it like I see it. MF have been my favourite band of the past 5 years, but Merritt has never said anything to make me think him personally worthy of documentation. Just my personal opinion. I'm sure the film will be very successful.

  • @Ender605 - I'm not sure how it's snobbery. There are any number of people who produce great art who aren't, to some people, interesting as individuals.

  • i'm personally not a fan of the magnetic fields. that merritt dude is probably a cool enough person but the ad for this doc makes him look like he is the epitomy of the perceived notion of what an indie rock superstar is supposed to be -which is to say a depressed, whiny, self involved prima donna. this trailer looks like it is advertising a parody and i think it is doing the film and the band disservice. if the flick is 2 hours of this, i don't think it will gain the band any new fans.

  • Yeah I'll second this
