  • Two things REALLY bother me in this video. The power through the door and the grounding to the body. The grounding part is fine in the end if it doesn't cause a ground loop in your install, but I would run all the way to the battery with it, fused of course. If you really try you could find some space to shove the power leads through the firewall with an existing loom.

    Now for the rest of the install, very nice. I love the control head bracket and the mounting of the speaker and mic. Very clean look and I bet the wife doesn't mind it too much.

    Overall good install. I would do some things differently, but it's NOT MY CAR. If it works for you and you are happy with it, great. Keep at it. 73

  • Typical Ham install.. Through the door. Very unprofessional. Yes you can go through the firewall.. You're not even fused at power point.. Your power wire is not in loom under the hood. Your ham antenna is not even centered on the hood.. Just an awful install overall. 4 out of 10 install.

  • @RFjunk Well on the '06 Taurus, through the firewall is difficult. And, it's not the point of this video. If you read all the comments, you would note that I DID fuse at the power point (and at the ground point). Magmounts do not have to be centered to have an effective radiation pattern. The point of the video is to provide a drill-free installation on a new car that doesn't violate warranty or get in the way of other drivers (namely, my wife). Thanks for your input!

  • Good video. The trunk part of the install is perfect. You did a good job hiding and routing most of the wires with the exception of that power wire. There are ways through the firewall. Other than that its a good install.

  • Great radio, great install. Well done and thanks for posting. I am about to install a dual band radio (possibly a 7800) in the car and this has given me food for thought.

  • do you have to worry about sensors or airbags when installing hams in newer cars?

  • I don't think there are any RF-sensitive sensors in any modern car. Police cars are outfitted with multiple transmitters on several different bands. I've outfitted DPS and DEA helicopters with several transceivers that span VHF and UHF bands also. There should be no concern over such things. HOWEVER, you should not place any devices (mic, speaker, control head) in front of an airbag for safety reasons!!!

  • hi i was wondering,i have the FT-7800 and was wondering if it is possible to program buttons 2 - 5 with frequencies like ya can with button 1.

    im asking cause i want to put Police,fire and ambulance in the other buttons. Listening only of course.

  • In general, there is nothing illegal about monitoring public safety. In some areas of the United States, it is illegal to possess a scanner or some type of radio equipment (such as a ham or commercial radio) with public safety tuned into them with out some kind of FCC operator license such as amateur (ham), general radio operator, business radio pool, or other license. I am a ham radio operator in NC and I have ham radios, scanners, and commercial gear with some kind of PS channel programmed.

  • I am a little surprised you did not have the in-line fuses from what I could see on the power cables. Otherwise, pretty clever install.

  • Yeah, I went in after the video and added the fuses and the ground to battery wire. Got in a hurry to shoot video, and the idea was to show to do a drill-free install. Fuses are in now!

  • I installed a FT 7800 in my 2006 Colorado. I mounted a el cheapo console to the floor, then mounted radio to it.

    I did however, cut a small slit in the large gromet where the wiring enters the cab. Have both the hot and ground directly connected to the battery.

    Very clean install on your Taurus.

  • Looks good, there should be a firewall grommet to bring in the power :)

  • Gosh, and I've looked. Everything seems to come through a giant power block in front of the steering column. If I could find some spare pins on the power block, I could pass power thru the firewall. I've made a few revisions to this installation since then, such as better grounding, and a smaller fuse close to the power source.

  • Neato idea with the zip tye standoff. There is a firewall entry point, get creative with a boxcutter and an exisiting grommit :) I have had to use the steering shaft rubber boot sometimes, and carefully keep the wires tied up. Check out the Comet RS series trunk lip mounts. Have had the same mount on 4 cars now and NO paint damage at all. Would look a bit better then the mag mount. Love the control head bracket idea ! 73's

  • I spent about two hours machining and fitting the control head bracket. Another three to get the rig mounted, install the speaker, and run the wiring. The antenna was a piece of cake, of course. With prep and actual installation, I'd say less than six hours time.

  • Post-production comments: I later installed a fuse near the power source (battery) and a ground wire running all the way from the rig to the battery. A recommendation from a viewer.
