I'm 17 and I have autism. When I was 2, I couldn't even talk yet. I would always scream alot just to get attention and I had other problems.... But when I got older, those problems got sloved =]
Our boy is not only autistic, he is also profoundly deaf and he has Down syndrome. But he is so loving, can be very defiant yet teachable. Thanks to wonderful people from school and understanding people in our community, he gets to live life almost like everybody else...just a little bit more CREATIVE and COLORFUL. I will never trade the agony & ecstasy of having him as part of our family.
My sons paediatrician wouldn't give him an autism diagnosis as she said he showed too much emotion... but he has every other characteristic. Yet this beautiful boy is cuddly like my son.. I don't get it...more hurdles to face.
This woman is unbelievably lucky. My brother is autistic and didn't talk until he was seven and he STILL has tantrums. The worst thing is that, the older he gets, the less we can control him. To stop this, he's been put on drugs that are sucking the life out of him. He's constantly tired, he's only awake for about 10 hours a day. My brother is the sweetest guy ever, he genuinely cares about everyone, whether they've have done him wrong or not, but the treatment he receives is ruining his life.
Speech and OT people are suggesting that my oldest son may have Autism, more specifically Aspergers, what this woman has to say about her son, especially the tantrums, seems very true about my son, he doesn't have language yet, and is 2½, but he's picking up some hand signs and the tantrums are lessening.
It's refreshing to hear about the joys of Autistic children. I often hear about the tragedy of finding out that that child has Autism. They may have their challenges, but what child doesn't?
To those who say that this is too "feel good" because of their own experiences, I'd like to mention that this *is* the norm of what I've seen. I come from a family where so many of us were affected with some form or another of the ASD spectrum, and our symptoms are quite individual and, when alike, usually expressed in very different ways.
The statistics of 70-80% of autistics being retarded was discovered to have always been false. That's been changed to 50%, and I think it's probably lower.
FINALLY... a positive video. I love how positive you are lady. It's how im feeling with my son. I think somehow they find strength in how we dont give up on them. It just helps a lot. A million thank you's for this video. our kids are great!!
I'm glad that he's doing so well, but I can't help but wonder why there arent more documentaries about autistic kids who didn't reach those goals, and are more affected...my son is 9, can only say about 30 words (one at a time), not completely potty trained, can't read or write, and is aggressive....he's the light of my life, and even with the difficulties he faces, I am pleased that he has progressed to 30 words....there are kids and adults who don't even have that.
My boyfriend name is Andrew. Is the oldest of 4 & 14 yrs old. His younger sister Katie & his 2 younger brothers Collin & Matthew. Andrew has Down Syndrome & Autism.
This is totally abstract. I want to see the whole face of this child's autism. It's more than suspicious that we find more and more just little snapshots of a feel good performance to raise funds for autism. This isn't the real face of autism. If you lived with severe or even moderate autism you'd get it.
@JNJhealth That's good, actually, no offense to awarenss fundrasises, of course. He reminds me of me at that age. I was a Thomas the tank engine kinda kid :)
@kgaccount I commented in response to JNJhealth on this vid hopefully it will be approved- isn't that brilliant they approve peoples response to this vid. I was critical so we'll see, but I cannot agree enough with you that this is [in my words] not representative of the severe cases that the public needs to be educated about the most. they say its not for funding-so is it to educate? and since when does misrepresentation with "happy little snapshots" educate
Your kid sounds just like mine. He was diagnosed a bit later at 4 yo which I was disappointed with as he should have been diagnosed much earlier. The music is a big mystery as is some TV shows.
i am so glad for you guys

i love the calmness in your voice and caring for your son....we can't figure out whats wrong with my son.
he gets worked up and talks back to teachers/counselors they just want to kick him out and he doesn't mean any harm mostly gets over zealous-
