  • Best battle I've seen since Goku fought Frieza :p.

  • So what was the clicking sound

  • Emerald Crab activates Rock Disguise.

Mantis Shrimp activates Ultravoilent and Infradead eye sight.

Emerald Crab uses "Get the fuck out"-Push.

    Mantis Shrimp uses Gunshot Punch.

    Emerald Crab is fleeing.

Mantis Shrimp has found the Emerald Crab.

Emerald Crab is Fleeing, but got stuck on a rock.

    Mantis Shrimp won.

  • @Kranda123 LOL!

  • I love how when they kill the prey they pick it up and just WOOsh goes back in their hidey hole for snack time :D

  • flippin awesome video!

  • lol the crab was geting draged by the mantis shrimp and the crab says no im not going with you and the the shrimp starts flicking him and the crab trys to run away but gets caught this is the reason why im building a mantis shrimp tank ! :)

  • If you got hit by it would it feel like a gunshot?

  • I wanna see one of these fight a snakehead....

  • UNDER DA SEA.....terrifying shit happens!

  • holy crap.... that would taste amazing with some dippin sauce.

  • Chuck Norris of the sea.

  • omg...we have LOUD clicking sounds coming from our tank. My husband just got a bunch of new live rock yesterday...I'm terrified it's one of these things...Scares the CRAP out of me!

  • @fenderchick1977 most people get these in their tank with live rock their fish come up missing then one day youll see one of these tunning around

  • GO EMERALD CRAB!!!!!!!

  • These things have some of the most complicated eyes on the planet. This thing can actually see ultraviolet light, that crab probably appeared bright green to the shrimp .

    0_0

  • Crab: "OUCH! Can't we work this out?"

  • That was terrifying!!

  • omg this is creepy

  • 0:17 Awh Wassup!

  • Dude! he is breaking the shell...

  • the boxer of the ocean... so awesome

  • awsome, what a beutiful creature, so alien.

Does the loud clicking do anything to subdue they prey, do they have claws?

  • @FishingBrisbane Those clicking noises are it "punching" its prey with its claws. They can break fingers they punch so fast.

  • @FishingBrisbane Its punching the crab thats what the clicking nosie is.

  • @rawritsfrankiie what an awsome animal, so alert and agile. I want one.

  • Peacock Mantis Shrimp is definitely master of its dominion.... Thanks for sharing

  • That crab is getting smashed into a crabby patty!

  • the shrimp might accidentally punch the glass....

  • It's like a mugger. It jumps out of a dark alley and beats the sh!t out of some smaller crustacean.

  • Im just throwing this out there but there are a lot of misquotations about the strike of a mantis shrimp...really a mantis shrimp's strike has the ACCELERATION of a 22cal bullet...so that means that when it hits its target it is going as fast a 22 would go after traveling about 2inches down the barrel...

  • i caught one of these and it jabbed my net and it run away =(

  • @siwulam these things need to use there arms or else they can get weak and get sick then eventually die

thats why u usely feed them live bait

  • @carl7707 I'm reading "Fragment" also, just started it thismorning & had to see what they were talking about also! very cool!

  • well you're entitled to your opinion... I'm confident however that vegies are not in its diet.

  • @turf1856 how many gallons?

  • Ummm I don't agree with putting these things in with other creatures. In a small aquarium, they seem to just kill anything. I feel bad seeing people put these in with other creatures. Not sure why you would want to see crabs die a violent death.

  • @Siwulam It's called nature. If you're this sensitive about animals eating animals, I recommend you stay away from Animal Planet.

  • @Siwulam he has a predatory animal. the owner wants to simulate its natural environment.

  • @Siwulam yeah? well i am sure we all agree that you're a faggot. Go feed your baby soy milk.

  • these things are badasses lol

  • I know alot of people will be probably complain and somehow drag the conversation to 2012 but this critter, to me, is one of God's funkiest creations! He just throws the weirdest stuff at us!

  • Has anyone read the book fragment by warren fahy?

  • The claw can *accelerate* as fast as a .22 bullet (which is the scientific fact that everybody.. even documentaries.. seems to mis-interpret). But these guys cannot "strike with the force of a bullet".

    Mantis shrimp strike = 1500 newtons ... boxers punch = 5000 newtons.

  • You're almost correct... the thing you're forgetting is momentum or the lack there of. The mass of the mantis shrimp hammer is pale in comparrison to .22 cal bullet even on a full growen specimen so there isn't enough momentum to do the same level of damage, it's also on a hinge preventing it from going further. .22's are also designed to tear appart on impact doing more damage. You can imagine why that would not bode well for a shrimps lifespan.

  • the .22 bullet thing is a not true, if i shot a .22 caliber gun at a crab it would go splat. that crab doesn't look like a splat to me

  • ewwww. these things are so creepy. beautiful, but oh so creeeepy. )x

  • Wow . .. Mantis shrimp's food is really a crab?? & can they destroy its shell?

  • i was thinking about getting one but i need to learn more about it so if any body has any facts about it please tell me

  • i heard that mantis shrimp can break through your aquarium glass.. any problems with that?

  • Nope... just don't buy snails that crawl on the glass.

  • @turf1856 If they can break glass, they could probably punch a small fish and utterly DESTROY every bone in it's body! These guys are awesome!

  • Comment removed

  • this is terrifying and so awesome. imagine if they were godzilla sized!

  • How is that even a shrimp? it looks like a bloody lobster.

  • It's actually neither... someone once gave it this name and it stuck.

  • @imaymakemakeyoutired How does that look like a bloody lobster? It looks like a bloody monster.

  • aww, I love Emerald Crabs, got 2 in my tank, they are getting HUGE too. Oh well, the Mantis has to eat! Contemplating if I am going to set a tank up for a mantis of my own. I wonder if it would be safe to place an eel in there with it, I doubt it though....

  • @penpen132

Nobody is safe with the Mantis Shrimp roaming about.

  • i am the greatest flought like a butterfly sting like a bee

  • Just be glad these things aren't big enough to take out a human :P

  • would i lose a finger if one punched me?

  • lmfao crab got raped

  • 1:18

This might feel like having a pistol go off an inch from an unprotected ear... underwater.

    You just start seeing stars.

  • that shits creepy

  • it reminds me of that bigass spider in the third lord of the rings, even the lighting is right.

  • wtf that thing is creepy ha

  • you can hear it hitting the crab! SWEET!!!and there know to brake the glass on tanks. they have broken the acrilic tanks to how ever you spell it. thats a big one so becarefull.

  • that thing is HUGE

  • this reminds me of epic beard man

  • such an abusive mofo

  • poor crab bully shrimp

  • What kind of mantis is this? Like, latin name?

  • Odontodactylus scyllarus

  • It's a type of crustacean ...... not mantis (insect )

It's called the Peacock Mantis =.= A type of shrimp

  • Actually not a type of shrimp. Both "mantis" and "shrimp" are misnomers. They're stomatopods, a type of crustacean.

Personally, I prefer the name "thumb splitters" due to their tendency to do very nasty things to errant appendages.

  • jesus christ!

  • lol it's like

"Watchu looking at foo? move that camera away or atleast get the shot of me pwning this mutha fucka"

  • the mantis shrimp is like IM THE JUGGERNAUT BITCH

  • scary, that shrimp looks like a monster!

  • WOW that sounds vicious

  • the hammer it hits with is stronger than a 22. caliber pistol!!!

  • Wouldn't the crab explode from force?

  • Good question... no (obviously) this is because there simple isn't enough momentum from the club due to its small mass.

  • @turf1856 The impact of the force is enormous but I guess obviously not enough to make the crab explode. When these shrimps fight each other (territorial etc) they don't full extend their club as not to kill each other.

  • that crab is pretty big for that mantis

  • That is one hardy crab.

  • at 0:12 the mantis said GO HIDE AND I'LL COUNT TO 10!

    1,2, OK LETS GO!

  • What a monster!

  • this is like domestic abuse. "run you bitch,i'm gonna get you."

  • can you imagine a elephant-size mantis shrimp running down the street eating people ...

...I dunno how good they can move on land though

  • or at least one that big attacking a boat... =/

  • Haha, one two knockout.

  • DAMN i said that shit outlud and my mom yelled but damn man that was cool the emrald ccrab tried to strike and he got mad and just killed him in the face

  • That shrimp is bad-ass!

  • he was MIKE TYSONing that crab haha

  • no no no he was Chuck Norrising that crab

  • no he was billy maysing that crab. this is what he does when someone doesn't buy a product of his

  • i believe the correct verb is chris browning

  • lol I guess

  • This sea creature has the hardest and fastest punch in the world. it's adverage strength is 60 kg per square inch. is is so fast just before impact, the pressure infront of its claws creates light and instantly boils the water for 1/1000 of a second. its speed is as fast as a pistol's bullet.

  • isn't the pistol shrimp's shockwave still stronger... it makes a bubble at the temperature of the sun

  • but that's just cause the claw is shaped to that not cause like RAW power theyr both my fav crustecean tho

  • haha o wow

  • Well the Mantis Shrimps punches do too at the point of impact. They are called cavitation bubbles.

  • Actually, the mantis shrimp so fast that it causes cavitation as well, which is the same effect that the pistol shrimp has with its claw.

  • nah - mantis shrimp will destroy a pistol shrimp

  • mantis shrimp actully tast really good i cought onre in florida and cooked them

  • is there anybody hit by its claw

  • hahaha

  • I had a really weird dream and I was eating a mantis shrimp. Then I ate a lobster and compared the two flavors. The lobster tasted better. hmm..... :[

  • a dream umm... ok that sound very ackward**

  • Hey, mr comedian, you spelled awkward wrong.

  • My buddy had one of these, first day he had it it wouldn't feed so he kept putting crabs in trying to make it attack, woke up the next day to fine legs and claws everywhere and out of about 6 crabs and one mantis shrimp all that was left was one crippled crab munching on the shrimp. We had missed one EPIC battle! Mind you his was smaller than this.

  • LMAO

    that is uffin hilarious

outrageous, i wish i saw that

  • lol thats just sad man... u shud make lobsters and crabies fight

  • he didnt make them fight...dumbass

  • I would eat that shrimp. or mantis.

  • anybody for a game of knuckles :)

  • that shrimp is badass

  • mantis shrimp have the most complex eyes in the animal kingdom, they see alot more shades of colors than humans

  • and they are also smart

  • @Dorado1082 yep, we see a 7 colour rainbow and they see 12!

  • oh my god this is gonna give me nightmares

  • wow there clubs are so fast you cant even see em u just here that cracking sound from the crab getting smashed to bits inside and out

  • That shrimp's HUGE!

  • Holy shit, thath shrimp fucked thath crab up!

  • If you hear the clicking at the end when the crab finally dies, that's the mantis' spear breaking the sound barrier because it's so fast.

Those guys will fuck your shit up, i know a guy who had a mantis spear go through his thumb.

  • it's not breaking the sound barrier. It's the cavitation of the water separating, forming an air gap and the collapsing on itself and releasing a small burst of light. No living animal can move that fast w/out a jet pack.

  • can we humans see that light with naked eyes?

  • no.

  • Dude those things are really intelligent and have the most advanced eyes of the animal kingdom. Instead of having 4 cones to see color like we do, they have 12.

  • human's have three cones short, medium and long wavelength...and they don't have the most advanced eyes.

  • I meant to say humans have 3 cone groups.

Mantis shrimp DO have the most complex eyes. Look at this video: watch?v=-lgNHdx3Q6s and move the slider to 1:47

Do your research in wikipedia too.

  • ii think the crab died...

  • I love how the crab gets a hold on it and it panics then begins to frantically ninja the crabs arse XD

    Pretty cool little things, these.

  • These creatures have very advanced eyes. One of the most fascinating things I read about them. They can see in uv and more.

  • Mantis shrimps are extremely delicious seafood !

  • That mantis shrimp is the most horrible thing I have ever seen. I must have one.

  • loll.

  • great vid!

  • but a pistol shrimp fires a jet of water and bubbles the heat of the sun

  • I guess I don't know much about pistol shrimp and I'm sure there jet is hot but the surface of the sun is over 11,000°F. It would be impossible for a shrimp to be caught/contained and then their's the matter of it cooking itself.

  • Right and Wrong. Both the Pistol Shrimp and a smasher type Mantis Shrimp (like this one), when they attack, create a single miniscule bubble, due to an effect known as cavitation. This bubble immediately collapses, creating a large shockwave, possibly a tiny bit of light, and a temperature of about 5000 Kelvin, which is about the T of the sun. however, since the bubble is so tiny, realistically there isn't much heat energy produced.

  • Ok now i do remember that... forgot the heat given off.

  • thats great, along side with beating the crap out of the prey its also cooking it, how intelligent!

  • this is very epic....

    what happened next..?

  • i wonder what would happen if it got in a fight with a pistol shrimp

  • No contest... that Mantis killed a crab larger then him

  • if any one has seen the family guy episode where stewie beats the shit out of brian "wheres my money" this is like the exact same thing xD lol

  • the crab got shot like 15 imes

  • mantis dont shoot, they hit really hard!

  • oweh fuck no i was rooting for the crab poor thing may it r.i.p

hah and why didn't the crabs mate like fooking get in on the action and both beat the crap outta the mantis..mmmm :)

  • RUN FORREST!!

Dont think the crab made it.. hehe

    nice colours on that mantis!

  • I heard that mantis shrimp throw punches that are strong enough to break aquarium glass. According to wikipedia, this so-called "punch" has the impact of a .22-caliber bullet.

    is that true????

  • yes but the club has such a light weight (and is attached) that the impact on your hand would just go to the bone but not likely break it. As for the aquariums with most of the glass breaking that was in older systems and tanks now are typically made with thicker glass so it's unlikely they would break it now.

  • Oh god I want 12 of these little bastards.

  • sweet, then youll have 12 broken tanks.

  • the crab is like 'OOOH HELL NO!' lol what a ledgend

  • Well said, my poorly educated friend, well said.

  • it's the internet I think people aren't bothered about grammer my very highly strung friend :)

  • i like seafood

  • Wow that was one tough crab

  • That is one mean little bastard ! Fry his ass up and get me some french fries.

  • holy sht...

  • I just read an article about the mantis shrimp. Apparently it's the only known animal whose eyes can pick up circular polarized light -- it can essentially see 10 times as many colors as we can!

  • I heard its million times more colors O.o

  • woah, I was just reading about tetrachromats (women who have 4 colour cones instead of 3)... spooky

  • God forbid nature should happen. I'd rather they eat a natural diet and maximize their quality of life then simply letting some food processor grind them up and put it in fish food which is equivalent to eating hot dogs for your whole life. But hey if it helps you sleep at night knowing you don't have to see it done...

  • You win the thread.

  • Thank you for not being a blind, ignorant "moral" crusader.

  • Yea charles you are a freaken idiot, this is what the mantis shrimp does in real life, every day, and theres millions of them all over the ocean being "cruel" as you call it. It's called the circle of life, the crab is prey for the shrimp which is a predator.
