yes there is criticism. but is there justified criticism?
i always see ITER in connection to the Wendelstein 7-X, we are also building a really huge stellerator. These two experiments will show which design is more promising for a future power plant, tokamak or stellerator, and right now i think it makes sense to research both approaches. Both will give data about burning plasmas in magnetic confinement, two different ways of confinement.

I was glad to read that a 'satellite' project is planned, which shall investigate to viability of upgrading ITER at a later stage to a more attractive 'Advanced Tokamak' design.

compared to the money that is being invested in military and wars, the costs of these experiments are quite tiny, especially when you consider that many nations chip in.
when it comes to the risks of radiation, they are really very cautious. they are testing materials in nuclear power plants, to see how they react to the radiation, to confirm which isotopes will form and how long they will stay radioactive.

so they have the goal of only irradiating materials to the point that they just need to rest for 100 years, or 200 years maximum, before the materials can be recycled and used for something else or sold safely.
i think wendelstein 7-x is a lot cheaper than iter. but it also uses superconductors, in a more complex shape, also has to deal with radiation issues, also has to deal with removal of fusion products, and studies a similar burning plasma in a different setup.

so i see criticism when it comes to radiation risk, and i think that is being dealt with very well. then people criticize the cost, there i say its being paid by nations that just want the right to send scientists there. if you pay 10% of the cost, you can get a deal that allows you to appoint 10% of the scientists working there and get 10% of the subcontracts for building equipment. so they get something for their money, knowledge in cutting edge fundamental research.

so i think these experiments just come about by the scientists focusing several sources of government and private funding into one megaproject that will study something new and extraordinary and using top-of-the-line technology from a variety of different fields, like robotics, cryogenics, superconductors, nuclear physics, math. for the entities participating, its an opportunity to increase the impact of their funding compared to just doing stuff on their own.
