Because the play was in the end zone (instead of in the field of play and potentially breaking the plane of the goal line), the play has to *finish* with the receiver in control. It'd be the same if Evans caught the ball, fell to the ground, and lost control. Yes, the rule is confusing, but it is the rule. Refs called it correctly.

In this replay you can clearly see the ball is on its way out of his hands before the left foot hits the ground. Freeze the video at 00:31. And yes, how about the face mask for 5+ yards on the previous TD? LOL. Ridiculous, he dragged the Pats' CB into the endzone by the facemask, and not 1 comment by TV commentators. Read the NFL Rule Book. You don't have to make a football move in the end zone. Once you either cross the plane or catch the ball in the end zone with 2 feet down it is a touch down. If you fall to the ground during the process of making the catch you have to maintain possession through the fall.

You can't take one step, and have one toe on the ground before it's knocked out and have it be considered a touchdown. He has to follow through with both steps, and the ball was knocked out before he could complete this process.
