Hey ya'll :) This is Jason Mabie from the 2003 Men's Octet (Shout), (Nirvana medley), (3rd solo in My Girl), etc. I just moved to L.A. and I'm working on building a presence in the scene here. It would REALLY help if you became a fan on my music website. Debut album to be released soon! Thanks for adding me as a fan and helping me in negotiating shows with venue managers :)
REVERBNATION daht com, search Jason Mabie, and become a fan. Thank you so much!
@isurveil That's funny, because the 1998 UC Men's Octet beat out SNC in the ICCA's (a collegiate a cappella competition.) and this group is the only one to have won the ICCA's twice.
You know what's sad? It was obvious who did NOT know the song. When one of the guys started to whistle, some people started laughing, not knowing that's an actual part of the song. -_____-
@manhater101 I'm sure they rehearsed this song many many times, so I doubt he just started to whistle out of nowhere. I believe they thought it added a nice touch to the song. I mean, do you really think they would have the harmony so perfect? I doubt anybody would just "know" the progression, much less what part of the chord to sing... It was quite obviously rehearsed....
@bcmartin18 They did a live stream from Hawaii which was great. It was posted on YouTube. Just search for the Octet and look for the most recent uploads. 7 guys in Hawaiian shirts = Super Awesome!
@mywolf75 they graduated. Actually, there is currently a UC Men's Octet. This group has been performing since 1948, but the group member change. The '02-'03 Octet recently had a reunion in Hawaii, and someone posted a video of a short live stream concert they did. Just search for the UC Men's Octet's most recent uploads.
@monkfan72 i know they was preforming on school .. but after school the UC 03 are the best i wonder why they stop preforming they have to make this as a job for life :)
@punkpunkkid Not sure what being American has to do with it, but they're not singing together anymore because this was a college group which they participated in as an extracurricular activity, and they're not in college any more. You may also be interested to know that the UC Men's Octet was established in 1948, and different members of this same group are singing today...and these guys are getting together this summer to sing in Hawaii.
damn! i have been looking for this song on spotify for like an hour... now i know why i couldn't find a version i liked! it was this one i had in mind! crap..
man i love this. almost every video they do they find a way to joke around with a song, have a lot of fun with it and get the crowd really into it. its something like this that proves that they dont need a joke to kick ass on stage =P (oh btw, i'm not hating on the jokes, i LOVE em, this just kinda proves they dont really need it, but it def helps lol)
These guys haven't been "screwed over" as previous people have posted! They are all smart and talented men who went to an elite university to study various fields which have given them outstanding careers. Why can't they be outstanding amateur singers, and professionals in other fields as well?
@jannboy326 yea from what i understand they have a completely knew group every year or something... its sad :( ive seen a few years though on youtube through searching... these guys are higher then elite :D
@jannboy326 yea, it's just how collegiate acapella goes. Every year people graduate and new people join the groups. The repetoires change too. It's the same in all college acapella groups. @duhbell The Octet's repertoire changes somewhat, but these guys have 40 or more standards that have been passed down from year to year beginning in 1948.
@jannboy326 Well, though we don't practice all the time together like the old days, or have shows on campus, the 7 of us were recently hired to perform at a wedding in Hawaii- Maui to be specific. It was really great! And yes, we've all moved on to great careers. Rick is married. Jason (me) will be married in September :)

why are no talent pussies like the jonas brothers and justin bieber making million while the uc mens octet remain as relatively unknown? there's no justice in the music industry.
@windsormountain I believe that part of the 'injustice' might be due to what the Octet are. They're a Spirit group for Berkeley. However, at Berkeley and in the a cappella community they are rock stars. :)
