This song is about someone going off the rails (drugs, alc etc) then showing up and becoming a "good person". e.g someone gets drunk and kills someone in a car crash and then becomes an non-drinker. Hence, we do not permit the loss of life that must occur from starvation that other animals must experience in order for the balance of the ecosystem to continue to occur.
