  • i been fighting this song in regular tuning for years. thanks for the lesson!

  • Thank you for that...

Now u know what to play when I need rain ;)

  • gsus4 is also csus2- excellent tutorial !

  • thanks so much for your video(s)! you helped me learn a song i always thought was way too complicated for the likes of me. i sat down with your video for about 2 hours, and i got it!. you are a great teacher! what a boost of confidence, thanks again!

  • Thanks so much for this video! Is there any chance you could tell me how you play the part at 8:00 when you say "Of course what Jimmy does here is..." I am just a bit too slow to spot what your fingers are doing there on frets 2,3 & 4 (the solo part), in between the four chords that you play on frets 2,3,4 & 5. Many thanks!

  • @przemlem high g string 4-2-4-0-2, low c string 4, high g string 0, low c string 2

  • @przemlem its on "songsterr" site

  • steve, Thanks SOOO much for your unassuming, knowledgable way of teaching songs ehat would be unattainable songs for me to play, Open E CNS too!

My question is if I were to listen the others saying "no its EADADE" the chords

you are showing here wouldn't work, right??

Again, thanks for giving spirit! Keith Dunlap

  • @wishiwasdiggin correct...these chords only work in the correct tuning.

  • yeah its gsus4 not csus 2 the notes are g c d g being the tonic c the fourth and d the fifth look it up man

  • It's easier to tune the guitar to EADADE, imo.

  • @labanx But that's not the way it's played...

  • @stevertr I think Jimmy Page used EADADE live.

  • Thank you man,you saved me from hours of sweat!

  • Respond to this video... More than welcome!

  • Great video lesson man, very well explained!!

  • Hey Steve, thanks loads for the video, very good overall! question about what you called the tuning, you said D sus 2nd,... I am not an authority on theory, but it is a hobby at this point in my life, at 49 yrs., If I were asked to name the tuning, I am thinking G sus 4th, since we are in G and the tunig contains the 1sth, 4th, and 5th of G, please explain, if you would, why you call it D sus 2nd, I also see a C sus 2nd,... anyway, ... thanks again for your contributions....

  • awesome tune thanks!!

  • I agree one of the very best jimmy page tutorials I've seen on youtube.Thank You

  • Bless your heart, Steve. I've about pulled my hair out trying to figure out this song. Very concise and wonderful instruction.

  • Very very well done Steve. Soup to nuts one of the best song tutorials I have come across here. Much thanks.

  • @WidgetMJL Thanks!! I don't get them all right, but this one was ok.

  • D as in Dark video !!!!

  • Steve I have to say I spend a lot of time on these tutorials on youtube and you are BY FAR one of if not THE best out there. I've been wanting to learn how to play this song forever n always thought it would be too hard. but after one run through your vid im playing it...... awesome song awesome tutorial. SUBSCRIBED : )

  • Thanks so much. I learned this three years ago for a wedding, and needed to relearn it for another wedding this week. You helped me SO much!!

  • Love this video. thank for taking the time go to throught his thing so slowly. And it was great for me that you went thought he tuning twice. This first time I let you hit a note, I hit pause then moved to the next note and got close, by the second time you went through it I had it. Super helpful and your right it is a beautiful song, a masterpiece!

  • awesome, i had been trying since i was a teenager to figure it out properly, its one of my favorite zep songs, ive always just played around with guitar and got it too sound kinda close , this was the first time i ever buckled down and learned this much of any song, now i drive the wife crazy playing it over and over! haha! oh well thanks for the great lesson

  • Very well explained and taught. Good job. Thanks for posting. One of the best for learning this difficult song.

  • at 8 mins what is the riff there i only need the tab #s i know the strings they just move up

  • genius lesson. I thought this song was impossible, but I can actually play this after an hour or two. Thank you

  • The most beautiful song ever created. Nice lesson

  • nice lesson man however you said this tuning is dsus2 when in fact its a modal tuning being the fact its neither major nor minor making it a gsus4 tuning. besides that great lesson love this song

  • @bubbleboy099 I believe I said it was a C Sus 2 tuning. Then again, I'm not a music theorist.

  • nice lesson man however you said this tuning is dsus2 when in fact its a modal tuning being the fact its neither major nor minor making it a gsus4 tuning. besides that great lesson love this song

  • thnx for the tutorial steve! one remark though about the 'big stretch' that is being played somewhere at the beginning. instead of 'stretching' to that second fret, one might better play the open bottom string, as that is a 'D' anyway. just a tip..

  • you remind me of ben stiller's character in happy gilmore

  • excellent tutorial thanks###

  • thanks man God bless u....

  • Nice, now I can kinda play what I thought was one of the toughest songs ever.Thx for the lesson guy.

  • I wanted to take a moment to thank you for the wonderful gift you have given us in helping us learn to make some of these songs our own. I have seen a couple of the negative comments made and these people don't get it. I suppose we should leave them to mull over in the dark. Playing the guitar is an ongoing adventure and you are showing us a roadmap so for that thank you for taking the time to do this.

  • @beatlemania871 Well said!

  • Hi great video.

Can u give the tabs of the f major 7th coz i cant seem to get it right.. the one u use on the 10th fret.

  • Thank you very much! I've played this with standard tuning for years. Now it sounds right;)

  • @benzocaine Me too! I was so used to it in standard but it always seemed so hard that way.

  • The tuning is actually:-Gsus4(2), yeah, I know, it sounds odd, but that's it, nice lesson, have a lot of trouble with that walkin' run on the A bar chord, maybe if I practice more.......

  • hablas mucho viejo!!!

  • Excellent work! =) Great teacher! Thumbs up from UK

  • excellent lesson. many thanks

  • You're an excellent teacher, stevertr. As pointed out by tcbuzz, this is the best Rain Song lesson on YouTube. Yes, the video presentation could certainly be better but your instruction makes up for that tenfold. Anyway, where should I send the checks? ;-)

  • great vid thanks

  • Best Rain Song lesson on YouTube...thanks. Great detail.

  • ahahah you are trying to make it hard to see but thank you for making this! it has really helped!

  • Good Job! Sounds great on my Martin.

  • you do need to clear up your video , but , i think i'm going to use you as my instructor. do you know anything about making a bridge for my 12 string ? i bought a red lable fg 230 yamaha for 10 bucks and it has no bridge . its in really great condition . is there a templete for this? please contact me back and maybe if you can help me i'll give you my email . ty scott

  • excellent tutorial sir!

  • This is an awesome lesson. You did a nice job. That f maj 7th at the tenth is hard. Can you give me the tab?

  • Alternate Tuning he is using, like Jimmy Page, D Sus 2nd?? D-G-C-G-C-D

  • Awesome tutorial. I love this song.

  • Great lesson! Can't wait to try it! Thanks for posting.

  • Dude, this is by far the best "Rain Song" lesson that is currently on YouTube. your way of conveying information & your ability to simplify has enabled me to now play one of the songs which I have been wanting to nail for an absolute lifetime. This is something you taught me in 10 minutes or so. Thanks Man, I am one happy dude!

Would you happen to be able to do the guitar part that Jimmy page does in the unledded/unplugged version of No Quarter???

  • thanks man, this song is so soothing

  • if you want "The Music Room" to be a professional company or something, please FILM in quality. Otherwise it looks cheap and amaturish. Is the music room "cheap and unprofessional"? if not film with quality. Just a suggestion

  • the riff at the walkdown (remember strings in DGCGCD)

    G string 2-4-0-2 ,C string fret 4, G string open, C string fret 2.

somehow I get an error when I try to post it tabbed.

  • I never realized how beautiful this song is, always listened to it in passing. So thanks for the lesson. Good teaching skills.

  • great lesson!

  • Very nice easy 2 understand.

  • Thank you very much what a great tutorial!

  • great job, thanks for simplifying this song. made it a lot less scary. builds self esteem. great teaching skills.

  • If you need to hear his notes in order to tune your guitar, maybe you should try to learn to tune a guitar first before learning this. Great tutorial.

  • really helpful and really easy to follow, thanks very much steve

  • Great video and lesson man thanks:D

  • thanks so much dude! i love this song to death and this video really helped, since it really breaksdown the song for me..

  • Excellent! Thanks!

  • Hey Steve; Thanks so much for showing me the RIGHT way to play such a great Page/Plant composition. You are a fine instructor Thanks Again!!

  • hey,I dont understand very well at 7:40...O.o...XD...

  • Comment removed

  • Thanks for sharing your lesson.

  • Thanks,great stuff!

  • super helpful man...many thanks!!

  • Thank You Steve. Until today, I always played the song in straight tuning, and it just sounded a bit off. Now with the open strings it sounds much better. Once I saw the first few chords you outlined, I picked it right up. Thank You.

    Christian Tenay

  • im sorry, i really dont mean to be rude, but since i am unfamiliar with this tuning, it really helps to be able to hear. and i couldnt really hear the open notes when you were telling us to tune, and when you ran through them as quickly as you did, i had to repeatedly go back and try and hear the notes to tune my guitar. frustrating, to say the least.

  • Hi...

The goal wasnt to use my video as a tuning fork. I gave you the notes. What you were supposed to do was to pause the video, retune your guitar, and come back.

    Steve

  • @stevertr then you could have just skipped this and told just what was the name of the tuning. If you played it, it seems that you were trying to show how it sounded like.

  • @xplosive118 That was totally rude

  • you trying to make it hard to see?

  • Yes that was my goal.

  • @stevertr lol

  • @rrdr4u

    Idiot

  • THANK YOU, Steve!!....I am free!!!

  • Hi nice job, I always played it in standard which was tough...

One thing I noticed on the part with the A7 chord form...(11thfret ,9th,12th,11th,4th...(*9th* add finger on 5th string 8thfret as well)) gives a bit of tension, plus I saw Jimmy do it on the live video.......Thanks!!!

  • Thank god for this video man!

  • This is the song that inspired me to pick up a guitar (about a year and a half ago). I have loved this tune since i was a kid and gave up on it straight away because i was trying to play it in open tuning with non-giraffe like hands... Still being a bit of a noob, it was only when i can back to it last week watching jimmy play it that i twigged and found this! I can play half the song in a couple of days! I love you man, i'd have your babies but my insides are all wrong!

  • Its all been said but THANK YOU !!!

  • grainy video but your instruction is great

  • Thanx mate your legend!!!

  • Im looking for semi-accurate tabs to this song. msg me if you have them at gdpeepers. Thanks

  • Could you post the tabs for Jimmy's bit in the walking the bassline part please?

  • Thanks a lot for your time and effort... I'm also an intermediate player at best and you just opened the world of alternate tunings for me.

    This is fantastic!

    Thanks again.....

  • brilliant-chanced upon your lesson-everything is in the tuning. i'd say i am intermediate at best but i feel like jimmy page tonight! thanks

  • i learned this song straight from tabs ten years ago, but i wish ol youtube hosting your tutorial was around then! your a very good teacher, patient and clear, so unlike many other ppls tutorials where the guy thinks simply playing the song and telling us how easy it is qualifies as instructions! could u try classical gas? wud b much appreciated! thanks buddy, shine on!

  • this is really deep dude, thank you, zepplin rules and Page is a true genius.

when one tries to come up with something own within this tuning its really difficult and one can see how Page used nearly all the posibilities of this kind of tuning - I'm amazed!

  • A truly Excellent lesson! A really special song.....Make more,you are a great teacher!

  • what is the difference in tuning between your version (easier) and the version troubleclef has on you tube.....which sounds real rich also....thanks

  • its the same tuning he uses

  • u could be a great teacher! thanx!

  • The one thing I'm having trouble with is barring the A chord and walking the bass down, my fingers get very stiff and don't want to move. Any advice?

  • practice everyday..... ull get therr

  • Thanks Steve, you just made my life easier. I got to buy a steel guitar now. It just won't sound right on my classical guitar.

  • yeh but ur fingers will start to hurt like crazy lol

  • Thank you! This was one song that I wanted play and it was simple and fun!!

  • wow , that's it !! Thank you so much !! Best wishes and lots of happiness to you !! Thanks again , Michl

  • Your a good teacher

  • Good stuff man.......people like you who take time to help others out make the world a better place. Have a great day!

  • hey Steve...cant seem to get the riff right before the walking bass. Help. Thanks

  • if you mean the one that repeats 3 times it is: 4th string from top 2nd fret, 4th string 4th fret, 4th string open, 4th string 2nd fret, 3rd string 4th fret, 4th string open, 3rd string 2nd fret

  • Thanks Steve. You are above and beyond. I got it!

  • Steve didn't help you out with that I did...I figured it out myself by watching someone elses video.....was having the same problem.

  • great song and great lesson. Can you give me the tab for the 4th cord (streach) please? Thanks for a terrific lesson.

  • Sure thing, Here you go.

    0-0-5-4-2-0

  • THanks again Steve

  • u are a great teacher...awesome song...

  • I bought the guitar yesterday and thanks to you my friend, I can now ply the Rain Song, thank you! Thank you so much!

  • unclebernie. what do you get out of telling people they're wrong? You suck the life out of everyone. This is youtube not Juliard. your tragic. post the correct one yourself or just sit back and nod to yourself. Stevetr, your alright mate.

  • Thanks bro. Anyone who has the balls to say your wrong has only to post a correct vid! (theres always some tech, no feeling ,wanna- be ready to post crap comments) I used to watch my big brother play this when I was a kid (30 years ago) and i would sneak his guitar when he was out. You just filled in a l'ife gap'! Thankyou. Disregard any big head that says your not on to it.

  • Thank You!

  • I never could figure out this song in all my years... thank you for the alt tuning tip

  • Thanks a Zillion! You have made it possible for me to learn my favorite song, the master-masterpiece.

  • thank you "Maestro" you are a great guitar palyer. thanks to you I know now how to play these beautyful pice song !

  • Thanks a lot. Great video. Super cool for you to post this.

  • Hey Steve, this ones totally awesome. I somehow feel different after learning it. Alternate tunings are always magical. I found I always can count on you for instructional help.

Thanks for all your effort, man.

  • to answer your question : why people dont watch your second video, i believe your version here is wrong, listen carfuly to the original.

    cheers

  • pages strumming is differenti think. but notes al right hes got the right version

  • . Hold breath

    2. Copy comment

    3. Go to a different video put this same comment in it if u can go without breath you are an awesome kisser!!!!!

  • very nice! i am getting to catch it soon...

but it´s hard to get that what "Jimmy does" at

7:40 ...is there a possible more slomo like version? ... You explained an easier part more "sophisticated" then these one.. =)

(and I really would like to catch Part 2 for sure) but thank you anyway!

  • You know what's really funny? If you look at this video, and then at part 2, you'll see that only half as many people viewed part 2 as viewed part 1. Do you think that means that people are flustered with part 1 and don't move on?

    Steve

  • maybe they just wanted to learn the 1st half of the song,

or maybe they just wanted to check out the first video but don't own a guitar so didnt bother watching the second one

    lol

  • I'll tell you what it is... Like me, I have Zeppelin in my soul so I have heard this song a million times and have never tried to learn it. I watch this video and get the tuning and the basic chords and then just figure the rest by ear. Good Job though man! You teach well!

  • I love the second part

    thanks for the lesson

  • yea lol but hey kinda confused at the whole walk down of the a can u msg me the tabs for page's walk down??

  • thanks! helped with a few cords i didnt know

  • Is that an Alvarez?

  • thank you, someone finally knows the right tuning haha

everyone else plays in standard, or ive even heard open e, dont know how thats possible but wuteva, but amen, it doesnt sound right unless its in DGCGCD

  • The live version is in the key of A in standard tuning.

  • Steve, Awesome instruction. This song is hard to play but its coming along slowly. Thanks again. I love this song!

  • Where I am having difficulty is at the 7:40 mark where you say "of course what Jimmy does" Having difficulty knowing what notes are being played in that fast moving riff. Can you give me those 7 notes or a tip? Thanks again...

  • THANK YOU VERY MUCH FINALLY...Someone to give the tuning and letting us tune to that..and someone to help us do the entire song. Thank you again. I have been trying to complete this song and you have been my savior. Thank you!

  • great lesson dude sweet playin u rock

  • You're very welcome. You guys are so awesome. Thanks for watching me hack away at a few classic tunes.

  • Excellent! Thank you very much Steve!

Wish there would be more videos like this one!
