I saw R.E.M. in 1999 in Minnesota. It rained near the end of that show and they ended it sooner. I don't blame them for cutting concerts short with the threat of lightning and or rain. Look what happened to those Scouts in Iowa. Should something bad have happened, R.E.M. would have been blamed for doing something they should not have. R.E.M. does their best for their fans and shows.
They don't play it very often. I saw them perform it 2 out of the last 3 times they played it. They opened their MSG show on 11/4/04 because it was the day after Bush won his reelection. Next time was on 7/16/05 in Hyde Park, London. Then last night as a way of thanking the fans for remaining in the horrible weather. Michael called the band together, then said to the crowd, "You don't mind if we play and extra song, do you?" Next thing you heard was, "That's great, it starts with an earthquake"
i was there in section 5L and i was pissed during the hour and a half rain delay but once rem got on stage u didn't cair about the rain and plus they didn't realy cut it short they did about 23-26 songs. and they did alot of songs that they were not planing on playing. it was f@*$ing aswome

They haven't played it live since 2003. I don't think they were planning on playing it last night, either. But special circumstances...

Mike said they never play "its its the end of the world". Was he being sarcastic? B/c thats one of the more famous R.EM. songs. Anyone know?

I will never forget the amazing, brilliant, miserable experience that was last night at Jones Beach.
"We should have signed the Kyoto Treaty. Because this is just stupid."
"I swore I'd never do this one again, but here it is. And completely unrehearsed."
.....'That's great it starts with an earthquake...'
Amazing.
I'm still wet.

Last night was one of the best nights of my life. They made up for it by playing a phenominal show.

I almost died in the upper balcony when the lightning hit up there...
And then for REM I decided to move to the floor level.
One of the most magical nights of my life
