FYI - The official DVD for this has finally been released on the Warner Archive, as well as the other two Roddenberry pilots based on the same concept, GENESIS II and PLANET EARTH
They showed this in summer 1975, usually in the 70's and 80's failed pilot movies wound up on the ABC Movie Of The Week-the dead zone. The opening shots were very nicely done in fact they're the best thing about it. It was obviously two hour long episodes, strung together. One involved a society of genetically "better" people, and the next took place in an old zoo with keepers who'd passed on their job to generations, like a religion. And the crew has to escape both situations.
Funny thing is that this would definately make it today. With the spectrum of cable channels, It would certainly work. I love this better than Andromeda.
These shows might have be picked up if they were made after SW Episode 4 A New Hope was released as that caused reintrest in Scifi. In 1975 Scifi was struggling Star Trek was in reruns and few shows were successful Space 1999 Largely failed in the US which is why we don't see much of it here. Planet of the Apes Tv Series failed as well so networks may have been skiddish to invest in effects heavy Scifi shows for awhile.
One of the reasons is because so many of the shows were done so poorly. If you watch the pilot and then the series sometimes they didn't match or keep the promise of the pilot.
Thanks! I love this TV movie "Strange New World" as well as the other Gene Roddenberry TV pilots, "Planet Earth", "The Questor Tapes" and "Spectre".
It's such a shame that they never went into production. They all would have been awesome -- great premises all! They would have surely been hailed as classic TV series all!
Thanks for this stroll down Memory Lane by posting this. If you can, please post the whole movie, broken up into several parts as so many others do for full-length videos.
I have the Gene Roddenberry pilots taped, except for THE QUESTOR TAPES. I can tell STRANGE NEW WORLD didn't work out so well. Here's hoping they'll all be released on DVD legitimately soon.
Well said. I'd also buy a DVD collection of this show pilots in a heartbeat. Don't like the computer-generated special effects. Prefer old fashioned models behind a painting!
The big mistake was to have all this exposition at the beginning. Rather they should have serialized the series and left the characters to figure out what happened.
Please I am a Gene Roddenberry fan from Spain and I would like to download the complete movie, but I can not find a torrent file or a place to download...
Great music! Cool re-use of ST TOS sfx. But the question constantly begs to be answered:
Where do these uploaders get their clips and why not whole versions of PAX? There is 'another' Roddenberry pilot I know of on youtube and everyone loves it. Paramount can't do anything if peeps keep uploading stuff, even if it DOES get taken down...
I remember this as well. If Paramount doesn't like it they can put it up for sale. With the writers strike you would think they would just put it in TV again!
I don't think I ever saw this version. I've seen GENESIS II and PLANET EARTH. I liked the second pilot better. I have it and was actually thinking about uploading it on YouTube. I'd like to see this one all the way through to see what was done differently.
It was similar to the Sat. Morn. sci-fi series "Ark II". The PAX crew traveled around in a heavily equipped RV and encountered different remnants of civilizations. This pilot was basically two episodes: 1)an adavanced society of ageless humans--made ageless by a ready organ supply from clones, and 2)a tribal feud between tree-huggers and poachers in an old wild animal park, like Lion Country Safari.
As a matter of fact, yes I do. A two-hour part of this life was spent watching this television pilot. The rest of the 46 years were spent doing other things.
I remember watching this in a saturday afternoon movie marathon back in the mid eighties. They ran Planet Earth before this so it was kinda like Deja Vu when this aired. I loved the opening theme, it had that 70's enviromental music sound to it.
This was a full 2 hour pilot that was made as a revamping of the Roddenberry pilots for "Genesis II" and "Planet Earth". Like the previous two pilots this one also failed.
Typical dry 1970's sci-fi. But the effects seem pretty good for the day- even for a made for tv movie.

Cool effects - influenced by 2001 - but good all the same. I've still got a soft spot for model work.

If you listen to some of the old twilight zones of the late 50s 60s many sound effects then would later 'sound up' on the org Star Trek
rangeclerk 9 months ago
@rangeclerk Very true I've heard that brIdge sound before ST.

This is an intresting piece of TV history in the height of STAR TREK's influence.
when Warner Bros. Television did these 3 TV movies,,it was hoped that Gene
Roddenberry could develop any of these concepts into the sort of intelectual
properties, that made STAR TREK the success it is. but of course,TV movies
were pretty "Iffy" back in the 70s,because the Networks wanted to see if they'd
workout. "STRANGE NEW WORLD" had potential,,but ABC didn't quite see it
that way.

This brings back such fond memories. They do not produce stuff like this anymore.
This was a trial pilot for a series that never took off. This would have been such a cool show.

I dimly recall seeing this when I was a kid. There was some... amazon society? Don't remember for sure.

I disagree there. The old-fashioned models did work in its time, but CGI, when done properly and skillfully, works better.
Like your moniker. Glad to know someone other than me indulges in the classics.
