Unless he drove it off the cliff during his fantasy drive, in which case he's actually dead and he no longer needs a car. (Yeah, I know that in the film that this scene originally came from, the driver just crawled out of the VW unharmed, but no way am I believing that!)
@LeviMan2001 VW at that time had no "real" model year, they made "running changes" as new features came in, or, until old parts were used up; thus a 52 could have some 53 parts, or, vice versa (Adding to the confusion of any modern VW restorer); my source for this info is the VW history "Small Wonder" ; it's now out of print but, I'm sure you can find it on EBAY or in a used book store, it is THE deffinative VW Beetle history

I think this is actually a '53 model bug, note the oval window dash which started in '53.
