Its nothing like the play, in the play the king is forcing his daughter to marry some prince so he can take his kingdom but her lover prevents him from doing so,so he was going to kill him. But then the princess stops him and marcus was going to kill the king but princess cornelia jumps in the way and gets herself killed and marcus, her lover, kills himself out of grief.
And to my knowledge nothing like that happened except in the actual play.
But I could be wrong I haven't played it in years.

Go play VII VIII and X because i guarantee that those two Final Fantasies will have the most votes for best stories. Cmon people! Wake up! I absolutely LOVE FFIX and I agree with wolvesfriend; that's your opinion. Of course, FFIX isn't as recognized as those THREE you mentioned (not two like you said) but it still has a good storyline (like all FF's) and it was nice to see that Square went back to its roots for the last FF on the PS. Great music as well, but that's expected from Uematsu lol.
And it's "Sephiroth." Spell it right if you're a fan.
