this is the first time i've listened to this beautiful song since my dad hung himself in his garage 25 days ago,,,, i called in work yesterday, went to the coast with my brother, surfed 2-3 foot barrels,,,,thank you The Waterboys, thank you.
Who doesn´t saw the movie, can´t understand to this (s)well... And this great song on the end of the movie, was like: Shit, why I wasn´t on Hawaii at these great times?...
Where can I find these interviews with: Kelly Slater, Gerry Lopez and Dave Kalama? I am looking for a clip with one of these interview and good b-roll around the theme of riding the momentum of the big waves.
It isn't often you can hear a song with this much meaning ... about life, about everything. It's possibly the closest we will ever get to musical perfection.
Love this song - I think perhaps Mike was trying to say - Give up anger ,hatred, fear and old patterns of behaviour. Move forward into love, and let the past with all its pain be your Initiation into the fullness of Yourself (Marianne Williamsons words). Very liberating to give up your Old Ways and Evolve. Wonderful, Beautiful Words, just adore Mike and his Music.
"The Sea" - I think perhaps Mike was trying to say - Give up anger, hatred, fear and old Patterns of Behaviour. Move forward into love, and let it be your Initiation into the fullness of Yourself (Marianne Williamsons words). Very liberating to give up your Old Ways and Evolve. Wonderful, Beautiful Words, just adore Mike and his Music.

The last look back on the soulless days of the "tethered soul bound down in the material world of the old ways before casting it off and stepping into a new age of light and Spirit. There is a gathering sense of urgency in the metaphor of the train which represents the step into what is essentially a higher dimension orientated toward the spirit in one and all(The sea).
These things you keep.. you better throw them away... you want to turn your back on your souless days once you were tethered now you are free once you were tethered now you are free that was the river THIS IS THE SEA

The Hawaiian guy was Duke Kahanamoku, legendary surfer from the early part of the 20th Century. He won five Olympic medals in swimming, and was a record holder in the 200 meter freestyle. In 1925 he saved eight capsized fishermen from drowning in California. He is credited with spreading the sport of surfing throughout the world. What an example of how to live a life!
I used to listen to this album over and over again when I was young (1990's ) I was a teenager then and felt that " this is the sea"was about the future, ie the next move in life I was going to take...... I am in to surfing BUT I think this song is about something alittle bit deeper than waves!!!
@MrJoeMother Yea man , you can run a free piece of software that downloads any and all your You tube Vids, (or can convert them straight to MP3) . @lombmusic07 - I think you are addicted to this song like me lol The Sea - unfathomable, immeasurable, no beginning and no end - like the Human Spirit. Always lifts me to a Higher Place when I listen to this song.
Thanks for sharing lombmusic07 - I always think of this as The Waterboys anthem - makes you look deep inside yourself and reminds you that life is about Change - on a moment to moment basis. Truly beautiful and inspiring words.
lombmusic07, I think you hit the nail on the head when you said "changes every time you listen" - I dont think the song changes I think we change and evolve constantly and we listen to it with a "new outlook". Yes the Man is most definately a Poet.
@rockchick80s Spot on, though U would say A poet with a deep understanding of the Mystical I spiritual forces that are the very essence of life nature, and reality and the mankind's living realization of this is our evolutionary pinnacle,
When I was a child - I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned as a child, When I became a Man - I put away my childish things. Time to Step Up.
It's 1990. I'm cycling alone through Connemara in the the low clouds. I come to a downhill, the sun breaks through the clouds and I see the glistening sea. And the Waterboys on the old walkman, guiding me down past the trickling streams. To the sea near Galway. Thanks 'boys! Memory of a lifetime. They say Ireland's got the low clouds, but really it's just closer to heaven. Must get back.
just now while I was watching this video and listened to the tunes I decided to leave my job, move from this country and find myself again. its been a while....
Come on people! This is a beautiful and deep song and all you can do is post rageful comments?? Wow...seems like you need to sit and listen...be still and listen.
Moonmaidens. Chill out. Stop running around banging your drum. You've got a war in your head And it's tearing you up inside. You've got still enough time to get to the coast. Lose your anger. Dude wind and the rain woo me to the ocean. I stop and stare and it is here that my heart finds peace. Scotty found it at Findhorn. So can you. Forget anger. That was the river THIS IS THE SEA
C3cover, the song is not just about surfing, but if you saw the documentary "Riding Giants," you'd perhaps get some sense that surfing (for some people, at least) is about more than just standing on a long, flattened-out phallus, waiting to get pulverized by white water.
Hi Nathaniel. Thanks for the comments however if you read my comments (OK, rant is a more appropriate description and for that I sincerely apologize, this Beaugrandrole person caught me way off guard with the posts and I reacted inappropriately) you will see I agree this song is NOT about surfing. I have watched "Riding Giants" several times and always come away feeing there could not be a more appropirate song to play during the closing credits than "This Is The Sea".
This is the "Greatness" of Music and The "Magnificence" of The Nature, both of them can simply Unite the whole of this World!! So "Peace on you All, wherever you are" -Aloohaa-
I love this song. it reminds me of my backpack trip to australia...I cried out loud listening to this song on my way back home to brazil, thinking about all my friends I met there and things we lived together, lol. I won't probably see them again but this song keeps the dream alive! amazing...
Then just take with you a few lines from Tennyson's poem "Ulysses"
I am part of all that I have met; Yet all experience is an arch wherethrough
gleams that untravelled world, whose margin fades forever and forever when I move. How dull it is to pause, to make an end,to rust unburnished, not to shine in use! As though to breath were life, life piled on life. One equal-temper of heroic hearts, made weak by time and fate, but strong in will. To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield !
Thank you so much for these lines. It made me feel very emotional.I've never read Ulysses before, but I will.I love mythology coz it's like a guide which helps me to understand the life. The power of myth is one of my favorite books.I love traveling cuz it's how I feel I'm alive, tasting all the possibilities n discovering/learning much more about myself. When I'm not traveling I try to run away from the routine doing things that give me pleasure, such as surfing, running and swimming.I Love the life
Now if youre feelin weary If youve been alone too long Maybe youve been suffering from A few too many Plans that have gone wrong And youre trying to remember How fine your life used to be Running around banging your drum Like its 1973 Well that was the river This is the sea! Wooo!
Now you say youve got trouble You say youve got pain You sayve got nothing left to believe in Nothing to hold on to Nothing to trust Nothing but chains Youre scouring your conscience Raking through your memories Scouring your conscience Raking through your memories But that was the river This is the sea yeah!
Now I can see you wavering As you try to decide Youve got a war in your head And its tearing you up inside Youre trying to make sense Of something that you just cant see Trying to make sense now And you know you once held the key But that was the river And this is the sea! Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah!
Now I hear theres a train Its coming on down the line Its yours if you hurry Youve got still enough time And you dont need no ticket And you dont pay no fee No you dont need no ticket You dont pay no fee Because that was the river And this is the sea! Behold the sea!
Pure medicinal soul food that was the river this is the sea

This is The Sea These things you keep
Youd better throw them away
You wanna turn your back
On your soulless days
Once you were tethered
And now you are free
Once you were tethered
Well now you are free
That was the river
This is the sea!

I dont know but theres just something about surfing, that has a sense of freedom, exhilaration and comradery
