ive been surfing for a full year now and this is the greatest gift ive ever gotten.

The Hawaiian guy was Duke Kahanamoku, legendary surfer from the early part of the 20th Century. He won five Olympic medals in swimming, and was a record holder in the 200 meter freestyle. In 1925 he saved eight capsized fishermen from drowning in California. He is credited with spreading the sport of surfing throughout the world. What an example of how to live a life!

C3cover, the song is not just about surfing, but if you saw the documentary "Riding Giants," you'd perhaps get some sense that surfing (for some people, at least) is about more than just standing on a long, flattened-out phallus, waiting to get pulverized by white water.

Thanks for the comments however if you read my comments (OK, rant is a more appropriate description and for that I sincerely apologize, this Beaugrandrole person caught me way off guard with the posts and I reacted inappropriately) you will see I agree this song is NOT about surfing. I have watched "Riding Giants" several times and always come away feeing there could not be a more appropirate song to play during the closing credits than "This Is The Sea".
