  • You will suffer! You will ALL suffer!

  • I'll agree with the majority here, David Werner displays some impressive voice acting in his role as Jon Irenicus.

This was a character that was really easy to hate. In the end, though.... that hate was totally and completely justified. If there's a flaw with his story, it's that he has practically no redeeming qualities, nothing to cast doubt on his motivation. There just wasn't a whole lot of conflict there.

"But is he really so evil?"

    "Yep."

  • Guys guys, let's give some credit to the amazing voice actor David Warner. Royal Court Theater, Batman, FALLOUT and this. Magical!

  • You Bore me Mageling. (best line ever)

  • "Enough, I will no longer listen to the babbling of ignorant children." - Seems pretty fitting after reading some of the comments on this video.

  • @DefeatedElitist your mind works in clichés? interesting.

  • If this scene were to be reimagined in glorious 3D cutscene much like the "Sacred Ashes" of Dragon Age, it would be the most awesome!

  • What the heck is this... powerful magician.

  • Irenicus is the evil equalivent to a Bruce Lee wizard.

  • 4 people (or more) are cowled wizards :)

  • @Mrsubzor I think he slaughtered like 500 when he took over their prison fortress. Or maybe the rest simply ran off in fear.

  • this game has a sense of freedom that games have not came close too.

  • You gotta love how even when Irenicus is being captured by the cowled faggots he's still giving THEM orders

  • Irenicus = the Aleister Crowley of D&D

  • David Warner = Win

  • Imoen probably SOOOO regretted that wee Magic Missile :)

  • You bore me mageling.

  • @LoreYseult Him and the late Tony Jay always made such great villains.

  • Wish i could get this game back somehow lost my disc version 2 years ago and have not been able to find a decent download of it . ( one that works without errors or bugs that is)

  • @The1WeirdGuy You can buy both BG1 and BG2 and their expansions on Amazon for about 20-30$, bought that little combo myself about a month ago.

  • Irenicus' brilliance and hatred is so far beyond the Cowled Wizards pathetically limited scope of perception it's not even funny. He's simply a magnificent beast of a villain, empowered by his calculating genius and fueled by a hollow hatred and unquenchable vengeance against the Seldarine and all who betrayed him.

  • @TheBaconlaser I dont get it. How did they betray him, he was a douche and defiled all that was Elven. He is clearly in the wrong lol. He killed hundreds for his own self gain and hes suprised he was given such a hard punishment?

  • @ItIsTheInvisibleMan Elves are only good for glazing when a dragon attacks the party. Pointy-Eared Tree-Huggers.

  • He was my number 1 best villan of all time in a gamespot char...didnt win because most kids dont know who he is. He was awesome though best villan of all time you really got the impression he could kick your ass at the start.

  • You BORE me, mageling. BAD. ASS.

  • "Our numbers are many... ", If you say a line like that, you're destined to be owned. :/

  • bg2 only has one flaw. there's no happy end (for irenicus).

  • Well, I guess nobody can accuse the Cowled Wizards of being cowards... nobody can accuse them of being geniuses either, but definitetly NOT cowards.

  • DAMN... Imoen is just toooooooooooo ANOYING!!! ah for christ sake SHUT UP WOMAN!!!

    PS: Cowled wizards n00bs, HAHAHA!!!

  • ahhhh! nostalgia!

  • shut up Imoen

  • "No, You will warrant no villains exposition from me."

Says it in such an awesome way.

  • *Picks through the corpses* Thanks Jon! O.O

  • "MUST I BE INTERRUPTED AT EVERY TURN?!"

David Warner KNOWS how to play villains :)

  • Irenicus>chuck norris

  • @ilovehell666 Chuck Norris wouldn't know what hit him!

  • @ShatteredOne2007 chuck Norris would rape irenicus

  • No ones voices play during cut scenes, at the very beginning his voice nor the golem's voice played, and no ones voice plays during this scene either...but speech during text dialogue plays fine. Suggestions???

  • Look, no one is going to defend "You will c... cease your spellcasting and come with us". That line makes me cringe every time. But David Warner definitely sells the badass mage. Overall the voice acting in BG2 was pretty good, at least as far as important story characters were concerned. Can't get all caught up in random baddie #46's botched line, even if you hear it every generic thief fight.

  • @DoNotABarrelRoll he was stuttering out of fear i guess

  • Comment removed

  • still sucks that when I went through my second playthrough with PST had some severe doubts when selected a spell versus the abis.. or however you spell it.

    Akathla ruined, RUINEEEEDEMEEEEEEEHAAHAHAHHHHAHAAHA BUUURRNNNN

  • Can you say: ''really bad voice acting versus nerdy nostalgia''

    ??

  • @goodflo911 There's nothing wrong with the voice acting in this game.

Or any of the old Black Isle RPG's for that matter. If anything, Baldur's Gate is the shining beacon that game developers should look up to and hope they can capture some of the spark that it held. The voice acting is really bad? Well, in my humble opinion, you sir are an idiot.

  • @isair81 Hah I dont care if you have bad taste nerdboy. The voice acting is just really bad. But who cares, it's a fun, huge standard rpg with a kickass story and good/complex mechanics.

But hey, if you think star wars movies carry great acting I'm sure you won't notice the voice acting in BG2 being atrocious. Nostalgia is blind;)

  • Why would you assume that i think the acting in Star Wars is good, because of my opinion of the voice acting in Baldur's Gate?

    No wait, don't answer that.

I don't really want to know, it's likely just to consist of more incoherent rambling and random derogatory statements.

  • @goodflo911 The voice acting in BG2 was incredible. What's wrong with you? If you're referring to that generic NPC that's definitely not the norm. In fact, that's probably the worst line in the entire game.

  • @PharodWormhair nostalgia blinds your judgement.

From the main antagonist: ''It is time for more.... experiments''

If you put this in a movie it would probably be hailing from a grindhouse garage horror movie shot for 10.000 dollars. Ok it's a great game, but the voice acting is just atrocious.

  • @goodflo911 Do you even know who voices Irenicus? David Warner, look him up.

  • @xivlia And that is supposed to convince me of the QUALITY of Irenicus's voice acting ?:P

By gargoths hammer... ahhahahahaha. No srlsy, you probably never read a book or seen a good movie in your life. I think it ends here.

  • @goodflo911 u clearly dont understand voice acting mate ^^ and besides why are you comparing a game with a movie. whole diffrent things. yes games are expected to be more lower budget than movies especially older games like this. but that doesnt mean the vioce acting is shit. and it clearly isnt, it suits the game pretty well actually. and if u had seen the old tron you would know who david warner is. hes a good actor and a good vioce actor. U my friend is the one who doesnt know anything. GLHF

  • @xivlia haha, you even speak in cliche's, no wonder you think thisi s good voice acting. I know who david Warner is, he's possibly one of the worst B-actors ever, and you mised my reference to him, so I guess your movie knowledge isn't that big anyway. ''GLHF'' hahaha, supernerd. No seriously, go read ab ook or watch a proper movie, not some kid movie aimed at a <90 IQ audience. Come back when you've grown some hair on that ballsack of yours and lost your virginity you bottom feeder.

  • @goodflo911 mate i have watched proper movies. Gladiator, Saving private ryan, troy, LoTR, 300 spartans, 300, tron, tron legacy, limitless, unknown, matrix god father 1 2 3, good fellas, scarface kick ass, spiderman, iron man, transformer, i can go all day long stuffing your face with all the good movies ive watched. u just dont get it do you? the voice acting in this game is not bad, its normal and it suits the game u dumbass.

  • @xivlia ROFL that you even dare name gladiotor, spr, troy, tron legacy, matrix and 300 with a movie like god father shows me how much of an embarassment you are. Your parents should be dissapointed. It's clear that the gap between our understanding of movies is too big to abridge. Where I observe what is shown in a movie you .. let's say, have a more periferal outlook. I hope you wll continue prizing puposely ham fisted voice acting of john irenicus. ''You will suffer, you will aaallll suffer''.

  • @goodflo911 lohol ohok dude ^^

  • @goodflo911 Ok, kid, go and play Mario Bros. We all here like this voice. Irenicus has made some top10 of Evil characters of video games, so other people does too. Just stop trolling here and go play Under 12 years old games. Good luck with that and try not cheating.

  • @goodflo911 Obviously, I overestimated you, ' cos you are like 8 years old. So... you are not the public for this kind of game.

  • @Anonimolino foreveralone.jpg

  • @goodflo911 "hurr durr i am mad cuz i'm being bad at trolling".

Yes, you can be elitist with a game like Baldrus Gate, and voice acting is not equal to the quality of the game.

  • "...do you even know whom you face?"

  • This is why we all loved Baldur's Gate, and why John Irenicus was the best.

  • is it bad that I can recite this verbatim?

  • You bore me mageling...

  • David Warner, you are under arrest by David Warner!

  • @LambadLambadLambda lol delta knights reference?

  • @crazypants88

Wow! I should send you $100 as a reward for getting that obscure reference!

  • Imoen's magic missiles merely tickled Irenicus.

  • sheesh against such a powerful spellcaster all she can think of is magic missile to respond? "You will suffer! you will all suffer!"

  • I can't think of anyone better than David Warner to voice for Irenicus. He gives him that extra boost of evil to him.

  • @NerdyHippy, actually I would say the Spanish dubbing of the game surpasses the original. It must be a first, but characters like Jaheira, Minsc or Irenicus sound just amazing in the Spanish version. Minsc loses the accent, but sounds just like a "big good guy". Jaheira sounds very mature and secure, while Irenicus sounds a bit older, but very evil and tormented.

  • best villain ever .D

  • i just nerdgasmed

  • "No one crosses the Shadow Thiefs and lives"

  • Ign did a top 100 villans list and irenicus wasnt even on the list, WTF is with that!

  • @troopatroop IGN IS FULL OF IDIOTS!

  • @diramus sad but true

  • @troopatroop @troopatroop Obviously they see Irenicus as an anti-hero. They're saving him for #1 of that poll.

  • the title pretty much says it all dont you think?

  • ït is obvious that Joneleth Irenicus accepts to be taken away for his own purposes (he becomes the new ruler of spellhold, but i don´t know if those were his intentions from the start). Either way i don´t doubt for a second that he could defeat anything the Cowled wizards could bring. Maybe their numbers are many, but that matters little when you face a foe who can kill you in less than a second.

  • I prefer polish voice of Irenicus but it's also good.

  • I prefer polish voice of Irenicus but it's also good.

  • Honestly, all I think BioWare needs to make another gem is what this one had; the polish BioWare puts into their game, and the genius of dialogue, characters, and plot of Obsidian Entertainment, and you'd have another great gem, honestly.

  • I love how he just takes the spells head-on; who needs wards and protections when you're a level 30 wizard? :D

  • Damn that guy is the most badass villain in gaming history. It pains me that he doesn´t get the recognition he deserves from console gamers and the younger generation

  • This is an unsanctioned use of magical energy!

Man, many years of that line, over and over again, I never got tired of this scene though.

  • Gotta love Irenicus

  • you bore me mageling.

  • Irenicus always had the best little speaches of his throughout the game, such a colorful vocabulary

  • I honestly think Irenicus could slaughter the entire Cowled Wizard order before running out of spells, I honestly think he could.

  • hehe, i believe you are right. :)

  • @GameSheriff

You don't fight Irenicus; you interrupt him.

  • indeen. They dont know how lucky they are .. i mean if he wants to he could use his magic to wipe out the entire city.

  • @GameSheriff

Irenicus like clown. He think he is tough badass, but he not even close to Kangaxx. And I kill Kangaxx on lvl 12.

  • u cant kill that which has no life ;)

  • @GameSheriff He does :)

  • @GameSheriff He probably can, perhaps he was aware of Spellhold and how such a place might work to his favor, so he changed tactics,...that and it must become boring slaughtering the Cowled Wizards after a while,...so being 'captured' might prove fun.

  • @GameSheriff Have to agree with you there ! :)

  • I went monk, myself. Who doesn't love beating dragons and liches to death with their bare hands? I know I do!

  • I usually went with Monk, or full Mage/Sorceror. With Monk, had to love the fast movement speed, the near immunity to magic, immunity to disease/poison, the high damage output, insta kill Quivering Palms, etc. Mage/Clerics were pretty useful to with a Spell Trigger with Lower Resistance, Lower Resistance, Greater Malison, and a Spell Sequencer with Doom, Doom, Chromatic Orb. The combination of those two spells let you kill practically ANYTHING in 2 insta casts.

  • @Bojaxs I replayed this game some months ago, and yes.. i'm almost ashamed to say i did make a kensai / mage char. After i had played through the original game and moved on to the expansion, the character was so ridiculously powerful almost all of the challenge went out of it. Still, i had fun reliving the story again after many years :)

  • Baldur's Gate is the best RPG ever! I think that BioWare and Wizards of the Coast should make another game just like Baldur's Gate but with better graphics because to be honest, the new games like Neverwinter Nights and Dragon Age, are too narrow.

  • They did: it's called Dragon Age: Origins. Seriously, try it, it's like Knights of the Old Republic meets Baldur's Gate II - with great graphics.

  • It's even more narrow than NWN2. Ouch, DAO was really disappointing considering it's reviews. The story is so mundane and cliched. BGI and II were interesting stories.

  • @OroborusFMA The only thing Dragon Age lacks...is David Warner!!!!

  • Irenicus is the most important reason why BG is better than Dragon Age. Being a Demi-God as opposed to a "grey Warden" is the second most important one. It cannot get much more epic than that.

Who knows, perhaps som Addons will expand DA-O to the level of Baldur's Gate. I doubt it.

"I cannot be caged, I cannot be controlled - understand this as you die, ever pathetic, ever fools."

  • This however is the best part of all BG II...The Beholder dialog. I DIED laughin.

Hmmm, well he screamed "My Chest" as i would recall. A spear was being thrust trough his own chest at the same time,so he could have been refering to that.

I assumed he was talking about "This Chest"though. So that means im afraid i cannot let you open it

  • Heh, yeah, between him and that Githyanki wild mage, the game was truly hilarious at times.

  • was jon playable charecter

  • no,he's the villain

  • PD: Jon Irenicus was voiced by David Warner

  • I envy those who are going to play it for the first time. :(

  • Yeah nothing ever beats the first time you do something as you don't know what to expect :) NWN was great but it didn't match the quality of this game but I have to admit Hordes of the underdark was really cool; I enjoyed Hordes of the underdark as much as this masterpiece :) Let's hope Dragonage origin's is good.

  • NWN initially lacked the quality of Baldurs Gate but in it's expansions especially Hordes of the underdark they addressed this issue and made the characters more interesting :)

  • "ExpansionS" (plural)?

HotU was great, definitely, but Shadows of Undrentide was rather lacklustre, don't you think?

  • they still need more character photos and voices. For the player.

  • The introduction of the character of Deekin in the first expansion pack plus Hordes of the Underdark saved Neverwinter Nights for me. Because of Hordes of the Underdark and Deekin, I have come to enjoy the entire game and return to it often. Hordes of the Underdark was a return to the greatness of Baldur's Gate, with even a touch of the same kind of romance. Too bad it was so brief.

  • Irenicus thinks very hingly of himself.

  • I remember this! Irenicus is a badass MOFO. Srsly.

  • Jon Irenicus is the best game super villain ever, he even beats kane in my opinion

  • Man I hope someday we get Baldur's Gate III: The Wrath of Irenicus, where he comes back from the hells to kill the PC's children (who you play as) for revenge (or something along those lines).

  • @TheDashRendar Meh, that doesn't really make any sense. No, leave Irencus where he is, thoroughly dead. And besides considering how Throne of Bhaal ended, (assuming you chose to become a god, and seriously, who wouldn't?) there wouldn't be all that much he could do, no matter how powerful a mage he is.

  • His vengeance was totally justified.

They basically striped him of everything that made him elven.

That would be like taking everything away from you that made you human.

He was a freak of nature, wasn't even a "race" any longer.

While I don't condone what he ended up doing, what they did to him was pretty damn harsh.

  • Do you not think it fitted the crime?

  • I like Irenicus' acting, but Imoen isn't as good as I remember her.

  • Dare I say it?

... Imoen had the most poorly acted voice in Baldur's Gate II, in my opinion. It's a shame, because she's one of the more prominent characters in the series.

Irenicus, on the other hand, was voice acted superbly. No video game villain has ever sounded so convincingly evil and bereft of sympathy.

  • I'd say there's only one I can think of - Kain, as in Legacy of...

Though just watching Simon Templeman on Angel gives me the willies...

  • Hold the phone, where did you say you can see simon!?

  • Angel, season 5 episode 4, "Hell Bound". One of the best episodes in my opinion.

  • Imoen has also the worst portrait in Baldur's Gate II.

Irenicus, on the other hand, was superb in every way ;)

  • Well, there are quite a few masterfully dubbed. Particularily those by Tony Jay (The Elder God in LoK, TTO in Planescape: Torment).

I'm sort of curious as to whom dubbed Jon Irenicus, though.

  • David Warner. Also played a Cardassian Gul who tortures Cpt Picard in Star Trek TNG.

  • @darthbandon10 and the evil buttler henchman in Titanic!

  • Tell me, how many lights do you see?

  • @Narrifani There are four lights.

  • The Diablo games were great! But goddamnit nothing can even coooomppppaaaaareee to The Baldurs Gate games. They're epic masterpieces with no other comparisions! Iwe seen BG on the shelves, not the old versions on a billion CDs but they sell a collectors edition with both the games and both the expansions in a nice DVD set.

  • Awesome!

The best thing about the voice acting in BG is the way they meshed it together to make it seem like an actual conversation.

For example with most of Bioware's later RPG's the lines of dialogue don't seem quite right in they way they are spoken between character's. They don't flow seamlessly like they do in BG.

  • SERIOUSLY. I can understand comparing Fallout to Arcanum (the game engine was virtually the same), but Baldur's Gate and Diablo can't be compared...except for the fact that Diablo II still sells on shelves and BG doesn't because of Black Isle falling apart.

  • I KNOW, I'm like "You just wiped out like eight people in the open" and he's like "I haven't the time for this" hahaha. David Warner was great in this.

  • "You will be overwhelmed--"

"--You BORE me, mageling" lmao he totally cuts him off LMAO. I LOVE that line! Priceless

  • Comment removed

  • God I love Baulders gate. Irenius had a real intellectual superiority that all evil villans possess except he was more fleshed out as a character, which made it more believable. Now I think of it, no other game has dialogue quite so good as the BG series. Massively underated game, which is probaly a good thing as overly commercialised games are generally shit.

  • BG is underrated? lol

  • Jon Irenicus is on a killing sphre

  • If we take a look at what turned Irenicus evil, we must realize that his vengeance is well supported. Also, he has such style that he cannot be resisted :)

  • His vengeance is in no way justified. He tried destroying the tree of life and got punished for it. It's like committing murder then being pissed your in prison.

  • Maybe you are thinking of Sarevok.

  • No no, Irenicus wanted to become a god by destroying/absorbing the tree of life... Nasty man.

  • That's correct, I'm sick of people thinking Irenicus was a bhaalspawn, too. OMG. And Sarevok is...er, WAS an heir to the throne of bhaal before the Protagonist defeated him in BG1. Sarevok was purely chaotic, and pretty much wanted to watch the world burn as the new Lord of Murder.

  • @MaverickAlvis When Sarevok turned Chaotic Good in the ending of the Throne of Bhaal expansion, I forgave him for everything though. Such a great ending.

  • @Athaeus Hmm. I keep hearing there was a way to change his alignment but I rarely had him in my party during ToB, unless I absolutely needed him around. His banter with Imoen and Jaheira is good stuff.

  • He still is one of the Coolest Villians Ever

  • I do not remember your love, Ellesime. I have tried to. I have tried to recreate it, to spark it anew in my memory. But it is gone.. a hollow, dead thing. For years, I clung to the memory of it. Then the memory of the memory. And then nothing. The Seldarine took that from me, too. I look upon you and I feel nothing. I remember nothing but you turning your back on me, along with all the others. Once my thirst for power was everything. And now I hunger only for revenge. And.. I.. Will.. HAVE IT!!

  • Jon Irenicus stands on the same level as Elminster in BG2. they have about the same level and intelligence. but jon is badass Elminster is a nice guy :D nice vid thanks for sharing. Love this part hehe ;))
