It seems really strange to me that Allan Kaprow would give permission for his own work to be re-made. I read in an interview with Claes Oldenburg that Kaprow in which he claimed happenings could never be repeated, and only existed in the moment they occur. He even wanted props used for the performances to be thrown out after each happening.
I don't think Kaprow viewed documentation of his work as a legit way of documenting his work. He fundamentally believed it was counter to his work. I don't know that this matters any more but it seems like a major issue ignored by shows creators and recorders.
It's too bad they weren't concerned with filming some of these great Happenings when they were taking place. It is rare to see re-enactments, but when one does, they just don't quite "make it". There may have been some film documentation of Happenings, but access is limited. Thanks, James.
a gallery full of tires in one of the most expensive cities in the world..........context shift..........the guy in the suit was like a Richard Longo leaping from earth art into his cubicle....fantastic. thanks mr kalm
I like the fact that each new staging of an event could be different. It fits even moreso with today's society where nothing is written in stone and new technology comes overnight. A so called invincible company or corporation can crumble suddenly and be in tomorrow's newspaper as the headlines. Nothing is permanent and everything changes.
I get it, but that doesn't mean I enjoy it. And, of course, not all art is meant to be "enjoyed" but this is down-right boring - I'm sure this was easier to concieve than install. However, I'm not ready to count hard work as art yet or give an artistic pass to an installation just because it has a history associated with it. Thanks for putting this out there James, it helps remind some of us what art is or isn't or should be or shouldn't be :-)
It's a "reinvention" of a "happening" that was originally staged at the same location in 1961. Somehow, in the 40 odd years since it appeared, it's gone from dirty backyard fun to museum quality event, and the crowd has changed accordingly.

What is this supposed to be? A club? An art gallery? I would not get dressed up to go in there.
