brian, my 04 jetta has a rough idle, not throwing a code. I notice it more on warm days. A lot of what im reading is leading towards it being the MAF. Are there any ways to check it without scanners and volt meters? thanks
@olmattieboy pull the maf sensor plug and if you feel more power then you have a bad maf sensor. I would also check out the vacuum lines getting dry rotted.
Also, if you suspect the MAF sensor to be bad, unplug the connector from the sensor and go for a drive. If there are any changes(positive) than the sensor is bad. If it stays the same, its probably not faulty. Clean it anyway.
When the MAF goes bad, the computer uses pre-defined values for air temp/density/volume sort of like a safe mode. You lose performance but it can still be driven okay.
@Shawncherchio What were your symptoms/trouble codes? If you have a vacuum leak or need a tune up- no amount of cleaning the MAF will correct a vacuum leak or install new spark plugs.
Hi. I hope u can help. I have a vauxhall/opel zafira 2.0 ltr turbo petrol can i clean the mas air flow meter the same way u did the jetta?? Thanks Rich in the UK
Mine isnt a jetta i just want to ask your opinion on my problem. My airbox seems to be taking far too much air which is making the exhaust make a chugging noise also if in neutral or clutch in sometimes the management light flashes and it struggles to set off/stall. Can you tell me if i just need to clean my sensor or there is a bigger problem?
Thanks for the video - 2002 Jetta wagon 1.8T had 3 of 4 coils replaced and still misfiring. Mechanic suggested the mass air flow sensor was bad and thought it could be a $500+ replacement. I think I'll give it a cleaning and see if that fixes the issue. If it is just dirty you saved my ass. If it is broken, cleaning it ain't gonna hurt! Cheers!

Hi mate. quick one: Opel Astra G 1.6 16V. When I drive it , it has no power and the engine feels like turning off. I disconnected the Air flow sensor and I have the same problem. if the sensor is the problem is it normal to have the same symptoms without the sensor? If yes, can I clean the sensor instead of buy another one? Thanks mate All the best
Hey i'm a newbie trying to do the exact same thing but just messed up! I was reading on another site that you could spray the outside of the maf screen not the sensor exactly will i now need to replace it cause i didn't see this video in time?
@cars123911 Using MAF cleaner spray you'd be just fine. They are designed to hold up to moisture and dirt to a degree. Brake cleaner can ruin them, but doesn't every time and in all scenarios.
do not clean them change them and test it after with vag com or vas, put it in alcohol but wil not do any mirical, just to know that ,most of the people who will watch your movie after cleaning their sensor will be dead for good
@MrGereaz This isn't some quick flash in the pan thing. I've been doing this for years with good results across the board. Many others have too. It's not "by the factory manual" but it works over and over for people all over the world. Do something that works for five years straight and then tell me it doesn't work.
i looked on the crc website and it talks about dielectric strength on Maf cleaner and brake cleaner. Maf = 22,500 volts/ Brake cleaner is 6,300volts dielectric strength. what does this mean? wouldnt the alcohol be to strong on the Maf and ruin its electric strength? cause i got paranoid with this and only started buying the right cleaners for whats recomended, I just wanna know if using certian strong cleaners affect electric conductivity or slightly weaken it, do you know?
@01sirvtec I use MAF cleaner now for the convenience because I do so many. Alcohol does well to just clean without stripping the sensor. Brake cleaner is too aggressive to use in this context.
i just got through cleaning my MAF sensor and also cleaned my throttle body real good with the recommended cleaners, i used the CRC mass air flow sensor cleaner and the CRC throttle body cleaner, but now my car appears to be worse. before it was idling between 1200 to 1700 rpm up and down up and down when stopped at a red light, now it idles between 1600 to 2100 at a stop light. you think i need to replace the MAF sensor?
@PR4470 There are two likely scenarios that can cause this. 1. Something was inadvertently disconnected being a hose or the like creating a vacuum leak. 2. The cleaner was excessive and is supplementing the fuel side of the air/fuel mix by vaporization and will remedy itself as this supply/pool is exhausted.
@PR4470 Your engine has adpated to the old maf and TB values. disconnect your battery for a hour then reconnect it.Turn ign on but dont start or touch anything for one minute.after that minute drive for about 30 miles for the engine to re-learn new values. Your engine should now idle better. If it doesnt disconnect the MAF.If it idles better/lower your maf is gone.Get new one
@PR4470 There are two separate issues here.If you clean the mas airflow meter [maf] you may not be solving the basic problems that are electronic in nature such as wrong frequency or voltage reading. You need to take some basic readings to insure that the voltage or frequency is correct to begin with. you need to verify the signal coming from the Power Control Module [PCM] and the ground. When you clean your throttle body the base factory value of airflow corresponding to the fuel supply is
@PR4470 part 2: fuel supply is disrupted especially if you break the electrical connection and ground by removing the throttle body. You would need to connect a programing scanner to the car and reestablish the base value for idle. The idle sometimes will not correct from draining the PCM memory or by driving the car. you need to establish a new base value [relearn] after cleaning. These systems are super sensitive and a cleaning alters the airflow value,so will replacing the throttle body
@richu27 excessive fuel is not typically caused by dirty MAF sensor. The reference voltage to the sensor is usually 5 volts: At idle the value is half volts [approx] and at WOT wide open throttle close to 5 volts. a dirty or faulty sensor causes the voltage [or frequency] to be below normal values and most often create a too lean condition associated with CAT converter will not heat enough fault code. High fuel consumption is sometimes caused by injector dwell time or injector leaks
@ksuleima1 had the same problem when I would part my car into drive. I've got a 1.8t gti. It is the maf. About 99% sure. Took it in for some repairs and when they cleaned it, it stopped.
I have a 2002 VW Jetta (auto) and when I press my breaks and slow down to 1st gear, the car jerks forward. When I changed my catalytic converter and gaskets, the "jerking" happened less often. I'm thinking the problem might be with the Mass Air Flow Sensor, what do you think I should do?
great vid ? 4 ya got a 91 regal with a 3800 ocassionally i start the car it then emidiatly dies after a couple more tries and somtimes pimping the gas fires up then runs great is that indicitive of a bad maf sensor
@briansmobile1 thanks appreciate the time could the maf have anything to do with my prob if it was a leaky injector woulnt i notice a prob when gassing the engine if it was icm wouldnt the car just not start thanks again my mechanic has ordered me a maf sensor witch he's not charging me for unless thats the prob he's gonna install it let me drive it around and see if it happens again the prob is it doesnt happen all the time
@asus3571 disconnect the MAF sensor connector and then try and start it and if it starts and stays running u know u have a bad sensor seen it alot on the gm's
@zomgbbqwth It's intentional, but still not completely comfortable for me. The worlds strongest force for good is love. I used to be addicted to anger and hate (red head natural tendency after being teased mercilessly). I'm ready to love and express every good and helpful thing I've got. The world could always use that, but especially now. I'm tired of wanting to hit people in the face all the time. It feels awesome at the time, but then it just spreads hate, revenge, and anger.
my car does this thing where when i start it, the engine turns over for a second before dying again. sounds like what you were saying to JLAID. Obviously it could be a number of things but where should I start? MAFs would be a good place yes? thanks!
@joshw604 Could be the anti- theft system, MAF, etc. I'd get a wire diagram for you year model and check if it's got some funky kill features on the oil sending unit, or security crap in the door that has a broken wire in the boot at the front of the door etc. Try unlocking the trunk with the key and then get in and try to start it.
@JLAID It CAN. Most cars will start and then die due to an independent system for starting. Rough idle or stalling is a common symptom of a bad Mass Air Flow sensor.
Ok, I did this, but may have been too aggressive with the cleaning. The q-tip didn't want to fit in those small spaces, so I had to apply a little pressure. Now I still have the check engine light and now the EPC light is on. Odd? Time to buy a new MAF?
@briansmobile1 Yep, I had broken it. Replaced it with an overpriced MAF sensor from AutoZone (didn't have time to mail order one) and replaced it. CEL and EPC light are off and car passed emissions. A good lesson for others to be very gentle with it.
haha man.. exactly the video i was looking for. thought it was a long shot that i would even come close, but kind internet folk aren't just a myth. many, many thanks.
Thanks for sharing the Vid. You just saved me $150 just by taking out my Mazda MAF with 2 screws I was able to quickly clean the MAF with rubbing alcohol and the MAF was back to new on my 11 year old car.
As you said on the video to use a torx t-20. And on your last comment you said a star. Those are 2 different wrenches. Torx t-20 is 6 points and the star is 5 points. There is also a hex. But anyway I bought the 6 points torx. I took off the whole unit and to my surprise it's a star 5 point. So looks like I'm going back to autozone tomorrow. But I'm learning.
Well I really like the video, but I'm at it right now. I went to parts place and bought the assorted fold up torx with the t-20 tamper resistant and it doesn't fit. None of the sizes fit. Just wondering if it was a star torque t-20 I was supposed to buy. I'm going to take the whole piece off instead of unscrewing the screws. Please help before I break something.
Man, so glad I found this vid. The school I went to was full of GM and Chrysler guys that preached the don't clean 'em, replace 'em bs. One old school guy that had more aftermarket experience than those guys combined said it was ok to clean the hot wire sensors. Now I have confirmation. Awesome man, thanks so much.
@beefystik You bet. You wouldn't believe the mix of "thank you's" and flack I get for the same video. When someone has a new idea he is instantly a crazy nut..... until his idea works- THEN he is a genius! The key is to just be gentle. Now that it's proven that cleaning works they have an overpriced spray to sell and preach DON'T TOUCH.... oh brother...... Just be gentle and you're good.
send you a video of my mf, and I see that has no part, will be destroyed or not really have anything there? mf some have it and some do not? no matter what part?
@santosutah I'd love to answer your question here. However I can't identify it without a question complete with a question mark. Go ahead...... ask.......
@kennyredline I probably wouldn't on a Volkswagen. If it's not dirty, don't clean it. Find something else on the car that needs attention more and address that thing.
Hi, your video is the best that I have found to learn how to clean the MAF. Making more research in the internet, however, I found that some guys recommend do not touch the air sensor and that MAF cleaner should be used instead alcohol. What do you think? What do you recommend?
@TheRobersos I'm well aware of the marketing buzz around MAF cleaner and the taboo that is touching the sensors. They are quite fragile, but if you're gentle you'll find that this method works great. I've used both methods and I obviously like this way better. Think of a car wash- if you make contact with the car even gently it removes dirt and grime much better than simply rinsing over the car.
thanks brother, this is the video (I think I need) I have a laundry list of codes--cylinder misfires 1-4, and system lean, and the VW is kind of running doggedly. Im hoping its the maf sensor and not coils or nothin. Not coils or nothin'
I broke my sensor while cleaning it, you should never use anything to touche it, because is a paper thin metal part that measures air flow and it breaks easily, you should dip it in alcohol to dissolve any oil or dust residue and leave it dipped for 20-30mins and once in a while move it around gently.
@adamdport It's either genuinely worn out and a small amount of dirt blinds it ....... OR...... it's getting a lot of dirt for some reason I can't see from here.
my sensor has 2, 5V hot wires. it keeps burning out the hot wires. any clue as why this happens?

just wondering if an ambient sensor is just as easy to fix? i have basic car knowledge looking to save some dough and to help my girlfriend out.

Should I clean this sensor if there is no code?
kennyredline 9 months ago
@kennyredline I probably wouldn't on a Volkswagen. If it's not dirty, don't clean it. Find something else on the car that needs attention more and address that thing.

Hi, your video is the best that I have found to learn how to clean the MAF. Making more research in the internet, however, I found that some guys recommend do not touch the air sensor and that MAF cleaner should be used instead alcohol. What do you think? What do you recommend?
TheRobersos 10 months ago
@TheRobersos I'm well aware of the marketing buzz around MAF cleaner and the taboo that is touching the sensors. They are quite fragile, but if you're gentle you'll find that this method works great. I've used both methods and I obviously like this way better. Think of a car wash- if you make contact with the car even gently it removes dirt and grime much better than simply rinsing over the car.

Bosch maf sensor is a common failure on VW/ Audi and Alfa romeo, some dealers
reccomend replacement every 30,000 miles.
Cleaning without touching hot wire may help short term...

thanks brother, this is the video (I think I need) I have a laundry list of codes--cylinder misfires 1-4, and system lean, and the VW is kind of running doggedly. Im hoping its the maf sensor and not coils or nothin. Not coils or nothin'
MandolinforJesus 1 year ago
Just got a code 0171 on my S2000. Gonna try cleaning the MAF like you've been doing to see if it helps. Great work Brian! :D

I broke my sensor while cleaning it, you should never use anything to touche it, because is a paper thin metal part that measures air flow and it breaks easily, you should dip it in alcohol to dissolve any oil or dust residue and leave it dipped for 20-30mins and once in a while move it around gently.

My MAF is going bad more often than it should (even once a month!). My air filter seems clean, any ideas why it's going bad so often?
adamdport 1 year ago
@adamdport It's either genuinely worn out and a small amount of dirt blinds it ....... OR...... it's getting a lot of dirt for some reason I can't see from here.
