Joining in the the american vs japanese voice acting, I always find american dubbing okay-ish, specially with sweet, innocent, female characters (Like Serah) because the female voice overs emphasize the girly tones WAY too much! Same with toughened female characters, their tones are deepened way too much!
The main problem with judging voice actors is the fact that most people judge how they sound. The thing is, they're speaking in languages that flow differently. IMO, Japanese flows much better than English because you have to be more articulate with English to portrait certain meaning, which can make the words being spoken sound "worse" than the same lines spoken in Japanese.
I find the English dub less emotional actually. English dubing for FF still doesn't get me as much as hearing it in Japanese does. It just sounds more epic. SE need to get some mighty awesome VA's, like in Kingdom Hearts, then I will be happy. But I am so tired of this "Ppl gotta have teh accents in FF games!" And in my opinion, they fail.

But i'm still kind of disappointed.

i just watched the english version of this trailer on the official FFXIII website...and I had to watch it twice just to make sure I wasn't having a bad dream. The voice actors are appalling. They have no emotion, no nothing. I find that the Japanese tend to give more emotion and meaning.

I just watched it also while the English voice acting wasn't incredible I didn't think it ruined it either (some average some good) but the story (which for me is why I buy it) looks like it will rival VI, VII and X's stories. I am mad that they took out big swear word (fuck) out of the English cut. I mean really it would've added to the scene if anything it seemed like it fit there. Plus they could've gotten away with it and still had a T rating I've seen bullshit said in a teen game (THUG).

The English dubs aren't that bad. They are all actually pretty good, except Lightning. Her voice actor is a little apathetic and emotion-less.

i just watched the english version of this trailer on the official FFXIII website...and I had to watch it twice just to make sure I wasn't having a bad dream. The voice actors are appalling. They have no emotion, no nothing. I find that the Japanese tend to give more emotion and meaning.
I really am dissapointed :(
Still, it's just my opinion, I hope their voices do bring happiness to people, it's just a shame they couldn't for me.

I just watched it also while the English voice acting wasn't incredible I didn't think it ruined it either (some average some good) but the story (which for me is why I buy it) looks like it will rival VI, VII and X's stories. I am mad that they took out big swear word (fuck) out of the English cut. I mean really it would've added to the scene if anything it seemed like it fit there. Plus they could've gotten away with it and still had a T rating I've seen bullshit said in a teen game (THUG).

It's called 'Final Fantasy XIII: Episode Zero'. You can find it on the official Square Enix website, but unfortuntely it's only in japanese. It's bound to be translated soon :) This short novel focuses on the events just before FF13 :)
