good song sounds so much like joy division. early new order was by far the best. that whole show was a damn good one. the sound also played there! if anyone doesn't know who the sound is check them out! if u like jd/no you love the sound
Without a doubt I believe the band was heading in the same direction with or without Ian. But I could only imagine how they would sound if he were alive. The remaining members did stay true to his vision of experimenting and pushing the envelope.
I've never been much into this song on 'Movement', but this live version has something about it, I like this better than the studio version. Plus the video footage gives the atmosphere of a warm June evening at Glasto, sun setting in the background, everyone chilling out. Interesting to see New Order at this early stage, still trying to find their musical direction after the loss of Curtis.
@claudioeyemou...yes, "The Him" is a pretty cool song. I liked their first album (Movement) even though a lot of people dissed it. It had a great cover. I had a silk screen made to the design and did some t-shirts in 1986
@weta - yeah "The Him" is a great song, I think Movement is looked on as a great album now, its almost as though its a 3rd JD album, Ian would have been proud!
Talented from both a technical point of view and creative. Do you think the quality of their songs degraded when Stephen stopped playing drumlines like this? That is something I have pondered before.
Partly. Also I think NO got worse when they started to sound more polished generally. For me, Barney's daft lyrics started to get tiresome. Also I think Barney, Hooky and Gillian are really punks (ie., make amazing music out of a limited playing ability) whereas Stephen Morris is a very accomplished musician. In the live sets you can see that more - the others are often playing the wrong notes but he soldiers on perfectly!
Nice assessment. I agree with you about Stephen's drumming on this video, as well as the videos for Ceremony, Denial, and Dreams Never End. The rest of the band could hit the hit the notes in the studio, but their live plaing is rougher, which I enjoy as well.
@FWFWFWF Yeah he listen to a lot of krautrock but ive heard him mess up on disorder and isolation maybe he just advanced with time while others stuck with what worked
Totally agree with you on Stephen Morris! His input on Joy Divs "Colony" is awesome!
I liked New Order to start with, and bought several albums and singles. But then they just slipped into the comfort zone, and became so formulaeic that i totally lost interest.
Mr Morris was wasted on New Order. As they ""developed", all they wanted was a drum machine to complement their tedious, clichéd riffs.
I don't agree that Steven is the most `talented' member. And he's as much to blame for New Order's dive into the middle of the road as anyone. Listen to "The other two" for instance. But that's what happens to some bands as they get older. It's just one of things.
NO's whole story/music is about missed opportunities and never quite reaching their potential . It makes them human and listenable. Steve's drumming didnt just make them sound a lot better, it made him sound a lot better.
@FWFWFWF Morris wrote Procession! One of the alltime greatest NO songs in it's complex simplicity...one of the outstanding qualities in all the band mates is their humbleness and understated genius in their talents. They are all so essential, I agree, Stephen is an amazing drummer, but Hooky's bass lines are remarkable at times and Sumner's writing and lush guitar chords are indispensable to what makes us all appreciate NO/JD so much. Their music is a gift!
My favorite NO song, thank you so much for uploading it, I agree, a very underrated song. Man, it gives me the chills! on the studio version if you listen closely it sounds as if an Ian Curtis-like voice is singing along with Barney.
I've only waited for this moment a few years. This is not as good a quality recording as the NYC recordings, but beggers cannot be choosers. This looks like early 1981 material. Thanks so much for posting!
Movement:Joy Division third album, first from New Order = Best album of all.The Him,my track "par excellence",playing on stage in 1981 by the original NO line up.Awesome.Thanx for this!!!

After many years of reflection, for me Stephen Morris is New order's most talented member. He really holds their songs together.

@FWFWFWF He's a very tight drummer but New Order with be nothing without Peter Hook on bass.

I certainly agree with you, and that applies to joy division as well ! Without stephen Morris and martin Hannet, the magic would never have happened.

I always thought the studio version sounded like a woman screeming like a Banshee. That's probably why I love the song so much.

Where the fuck does footage like this come from? I was sure i'd seen everything ever filmed of New Order, and suddenly this gem comes from nowhere!
I was only 8 when this was recorded, same age as Barney by the look of him...
