I would give my teeth to be able to play this music with some fine musicians. I grew up listening to Motown. What a thrill to hear this without the lead vocal track. Thanks a million for sharing this!
I borrowed a record player from school and stayed after class and I must have played this 10 times in a row. That guitar was so hot! I had never hear anything like that before.
Dude i wish i knew the guy below me im 19 too, but me and my friends all love these great artists and want to spread some of the greatest ryhthmic beats and lyrics of all time!
I am 19 get made fun of of listening to this but I dont care cause I know this is real music todays artists are not a patch on these guys or anyone from the 60s and 70s asses
The Funk brothers said it took only them only 2 hours to rehearse a song before putting it down on wax! That's incredible~ and don't even try to count all the songs they have recorded,Okay! Smokey Robinson by himself wrote 4,000 songs! I wonder if anyone ever counted every song recorded by the Funk Brothers~ Remember back in the day it was not nothing to have 12 or more songs on a Album!~and you could drop the needle anyway! and strike GOLD!~not a dope needle, Turntable, record Players! LOL!
Everything just works on this song I can see the English Groups were in awe of Motown and the Funk Brothers. Every instrument is where it's supposed to be the vocals are heavenly and Diana riding the top on lead and James Jamerson on the bass.
I liked it! Motown was competing with the Beatles at this time, trying to do something they hadn't tried yet and it usually worked. In this case, it got the Supremes yet another #1 record. Man, they whipped everybody like they stole somethin'!!
THE Guitar is fucking Slick cool it grooves so smoothly good like this is my fav part of the song the intro with the guitars the guitars and backups and lyrics but guitars do it al for thjihs jamm
I've visited my family in Detroit my entire life ( I'm a white guy) and I've always felt a kinship with the Motown family...Hitsville was just a kind of normal-looking house on Grand Ave and the music that came from that residence changed R&B. Funk Bros rule
James Jamerson fan right here. I grew up on this wonderful sounding music of the Funk Brothers and I am so thankful. This music is my medicine period. I was on stage with most of the Funk Brothers, and Billy Preston while in Bonn Germany. I sang some of "My Girl" with "Eddie Willis, Joe Messina, Joe Hunter, Bob (BassAss) Babbit, Jack Ashford, Uriel Jones and Lord I felt the spirit of Jamerson (my favorite bassist in the whole world), Eddie Bongo, Robert White, Benny Benjamin, Grif. Thank God.
I second that 23D, does the same to me. No music gets to me the way Motown does. All over for me when it went to the West Coast, nothing like the urgency the music once had. I took up bass in 66 because I wanted to play like James Jamerson. At his finest here. He was the man.
I love this version. It is perfect and nothing is missing. Love hearing the background vocals clearly for a change on this pre disco track. Ross's mike was always turned up too loud because her voice quality isn't the best. Flo had the best and most powerful voice! We all have our opinions and this is mine.
I grew up in Detroit during Motown's heyday and have always dug this sound. To hear the music out front without the lead vocals is a thrill. Damn, every time I hear the music the Funk Brothers laid down it is like having a key unlock your soul. It doesn't matter if you are in the worst mood in the world, the music makes you want to dance (which can be ugly since I am a 50ish white guy) Salute!
@stawberry19919 I KNOW WHAT YOU MEAN, as an arranger, I TRY to incorporate Motown Arranging techniques into my compositions and musical scoring, which is what I did with ain't no mountain high enough (the 6 minutes version), we had a musical film before, and I incorporated some of the elements from THAT song into our theme song, THE INSTRUMENTATION IS HEAVENLY!!!!
IT'S MUCH BETTER TO BE LISTENING TO THE OLD AND NEW STUFF

@23DLaj music is music, white guy 50's. I am a 60s black guy from harlem, (now a Catholic priest), who could not dance,,,(ever see Seinfied, with Elaine dancing), as a kid, and now still cannot dance as a bigger kid.
As long as you "got the music in me" edge with you,,all is right in heaven.
i agree strawberry19919 now that ive listen to the instrumental it does sound like a pre disco joint really great and yes Jamerson was really the best with his one finger playing self lol
The Funk Bros were/are incredible. I challenge you to find a group of musicians more talented across any genre or time period. Cant be donethanks for all the memories and great music gentlemen.
this song absolutely kills me every single time- it's unbelieveably funky and cool pop at the same time. what i can never get enough of is how the guitars, piano and organ all "shadow" each other on the verses- the downstrokes of the guitars during those choruses add a razor-like edge of drama to the overall feel. those funk brothers- the music they produced was as if by superhuman power. amazing!
Actually it was remixed as a disco track not very long ago - maybe 3-4 years. I used to hear it in the NYC clubs all of the time. It fits perfectly in that disco place. I'll see if I can figure out how to post it.
This has always been one of my favorite songs. Never thought of the instrumentation in the way you described it before. Been listening like that ever since and it is a brand new song. Amazing. Thanks tomovox!
Thank you stawberry! I appreciate the compliment even more because I was the same way in that I heard that song a million times and suddenly heard what was really going on with the music and it sounded suddenly brand new!
@tomovox Yeah - brilliant. If you want some more try, Wonderful/Jimmy Ruffin, Two can have a party/Tammi Terrell, This old heart of mine/Tammi terrell and for something really sublime check out Come see about me/Junior Walker. Ok?
Lamont Dozier is on the far left, Brian Holland is the man in the back of Mary, Eddie Holland is on the far right around Diana and Flo. I hope I got the Holland brothers right, lol. =P
Can you even imagine the power that had to have been felt inside Hitsville that late night when this was laid down. Every time I hear the "Morse Code Of Motown" guitar riff it just makes me choke up. Thanks for the upload.

Maaaan.. Motown's sound was one of the best of all time. Perfect compression, sweet high end and a clean booming bottom. I wouldn't be surprised if they were using Telefunken mics. I saw a few vids of The Snakepit but couldn't get a good enough look at the equipment.
What a BAND! Love this as an instrumental.
