A consumer society is not a bad thing unless it is all based on credit, Plus I'm not sure that I would put 100 % of the blame on corporate America. It seems to be the people in Washington who promote this consumption (lower/easier then natural interest rates/tax laws that promote it). A high standard of living is what should be prized. If we use our heads we can consume the Earths abundant resources wisely. But to go too far in the other direction of anti-consumption/growth is ludicrous.

Second "goal definition" is subjective to the people in power. The progressives think all should be equal except their class of people.
