  • I used to do this, but on my led during lunchtime in middle school with Vic Firth MS4 Magnums (made of really heavy Sta-Pac laminate wood). I have great doubles because of it, but only on a surface with no rebound. The thing is that my technique involves rebound and high tension since I come from a marching background. However, for those that tune lower, this is perfect.

  • good stuff, and good comment regarding the lack of rebound on the floor tom

  • dear jerald, i too have recently purchased double pedals and i am haveing trouble attaching them to my bike could you please help

  • amazing video man, But one question, if you could answer it would be really appreciated. when you talked about holding the stick, every hit that your doing, are your fingers locked onto the stick meaning that everytime you hit the pillow your stick is like stuck to your palm and its only the wrist moving,

    or

everytime you hit the pillow your stick frops down to your fingers and then back up to you palm etc

    thanks alot

  • Damn your pillow sounds nice!

  • jared is my fav teacher on youtube, thank you jared.

  • How can you steal Joe Morellos exercies without even mentioning him.

  • @goodnamepending i wasn't aware that joe morello invented the paradidle, double and single stroke roll, amazing!

  • how many strokes???? ;)

  • Comment removed

  • who's toui?? haha! nice video!

  • Hi Jared. thanks by the way for all these drum lessons. I have a little problem here and I know you guys can help me on this one. although I always practive them always at the same time, my right hand always learns faster than my left hand and It really bugs me that my left hand isn't as cooperative as my left hand. hope you have some exercises there that can help me out on this one..

  • can we use a drum pad?

  • this excersize is straight out of Morello's Master Studies...

  • Whenever I use that grip my hand hurts and I can't feel the burn should I do something different

  • Hhahaha I feel that people who don't know what paraddidle is will be confused

  • done

  • Is this Moeller? Or just plain strokes?

  • Hey thanks for all your videos jared! I used to have people make fun of me for my drumming but now they come over and I shut them up, the right practice makes perfect! thanks your A great teacher. I know I don't play drums to shut people up. but for the love of music. but I just want these people to know I got better, and all cause of the help of God and your videos thanks !!

  • could you make a video on how to et up a mixer please! Thanks!

  • would this be more beneficial i I practiced it with Marching sticks?

  • that's why i watch FDL videos - for good ideas! this grip is great thing! i have wanted to improve my forearm muscles for long time! i am so stupid that i can't think about that faster :S

  • Did you see this on Jo Jo mayer's video "Secret Weapons for the Modern Drummer"?

    Because I did.

It's a great idea and helps tone different muscles for balance.

  • Yes good trick used to do this in the 70's, also you can throw a blanket over your kit.

  • the name of this video is straight up innapropriate.

  • @freedrumlessons cough sex cough

  • @paulbalochefan wow, I feel out of touch :) I just don't seem to get the sexual reference. Maybe you shouldn't explain it to me here though lol!

  • @freedrumlessons your not the only one. I'm 17 and I don't get it..

  • @freedrumlessons lol really man ;)

  • @freedrumlessons haha i get it but someone just doesnt know how to talk to girls so he makes inappropriate jokes about crap that doesnt apply. anyway ill try praticing on a pillow to see what happens.

  • @freedrumlessons Im having the hardest time developing my left hand. it SUCKS. I grasp the concept of everything you are doing, but I just cant get that left hand to cooperate. BLAHHHHHHHH

  • @maybelooking try leading with your left rather than your right

  • Hello Jared, i just purchased double bass pedals. I have reviewed you're double bass videos that already are in place. The problem I'm having is that i need exercises like this to build up the feet. I figured you guys would be the best to do so, as you are great teachers.

    Thank you.

  • @kyjellyish Within a couple months we'll have a series of videos coming out where we talk about some of this stuff. Stay subscribed to the website and you'll hear about them :)

  • @freedrumlessons Will do man. thanks for the great lessons.

  • @keytograve thats cos hes using the lock grip. there meant to be like that to make the wrist mustles work and build up muscle memory so you can play faster rolls.

  • my pillow sucks :/

  • right right left right left righ left la

  • your hands seem very tense

  • This is gonna change my whole life. Thank you

  • Yeah, this is what I did to get my left hand up to par (which is actually now FASTER than my right...). I would play triple-its on a pillow, or my bed, or a chair, etc. I would play them RLL so that I would be using my left hand more. REALY. REALY HELPS. LIKE A LOT.

  • whats the secret to making the pillow sound awesome?

  • Hey awesome practice drill.

  • how do u tune ur kit so well?

  • @notquitesane131 good heads, good mics, good eq, good drums, and then properly tuned drums. All of these elements together make the drums sound awesome. What type of drums do you have?

  • @freedrumlessons I have pillows.

  • I like u! Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not homosexual or something. I just mean that you make people feel at ease while teaching! Even though I sometimes just watch your videos without practicing, I feel like my time wasn't wasted! thx for your efforts! Keep it up!

  • @LukeV85 thanks you SO much...I really appreciate it and am glad you like the lessons! - Jared

  • Hahaha! I got those same sticks. lol

  • Thanks I needed this video...when I moved I couldn't take my drums with me thanks :)

  • @jjens4 no he is right handed it's just ur left is his right cuz it's a video

  • how the hell did you get this awesome sound out of a pillow?!

  • @apfelipod hah! we spent years eq'ing the pillow and feel we've achieved the perfect pillow sound! :)

  • @freedrumlessons I bet it's a triggered pillow :P

  • @freedrumlessons

Can you post a video on how 2 tune your pillows for a metal sound

  • left handed?

  • This is just what I need...a practice routine I can do even without my kit...Jared,you rule!!!

  • @MasterMalovic Thanks man! Glad I could help.

  • I've practiced rudiments on a pillow for a couple years now, I picked up the idea from a friend of mine. I noticed the difference after a couple of weeks. I still practice with a pillow to this day. Just be warned if there are non-drummers in the room they will probably get very annoyed very quickly.

  • @UsedAbused0 totally agree...

  • my pillow don't sound like this....i'll put a trigger on it =D

  • That pillow seemed very padded. I had no give it in what so ever. I practice on a standard pillow it is completely different to how it is shown up there ^.

  • @OrbitPrime The pillow I used wasn't very padded...it was actually less similar to a standard pillow that a lot of us sleep on. I am not hammering the pillow and getting a super loud volume, so it may seem that the pillow is harder and provides more rebound, however, that's not true. The most important thing to remember is to practice using the lock grip. Then the pillow won't make a big difference as each stroke is being played completely from the wrists and forearms. Hope that helps! - Jared

  • does it allso help to do like rudiment practise on a pillow? like practicing flams and stuff

  • @allmetaliswelcome yes, this is only one exercise. You can practice whatever else you want.

  • Makes sense :P

  • wow it actually does something... did for sometime... and im almost swetting here :D i also made little adjustment to it: make it 2x the speed and do it with normal grip you use.

  • I currently dont have my kit at my house , but how will this effect you when you try the same on the snare or hi-hat ?

  • @KR1NkAndroid Of course it allways comes down to the drums themselves, but it's like running uphill, by hitting the pillow, you have to work that much harder to get the stick up again. It will develop your hand muscels, speed and control. When you go to the kit, the drumsticks will feel like feathers and you'r lighting fast. However, you have to to it quite a bit. I do something similar, I practice with samurai- sticks wich is heavier and it makes a difference.

  • @benson1ification Ah thankyou for that , now i understand better : ) I will be sure to keep practicing , thanks again

  • @KR1NkAndroid No problem. Drummers stick together! :P

  • ho does better than me on a pillow...
