...It's hard, because everone feels differently, and there is a strong argumemt from both sides. But I personally think the grand national is too long for the horses. I LOVE the new idea of Parelli Savvy Racing though! It sounds amazing :-)
i cannot say i agree with some races however it is a major event and everybody there seems to enjoy it and the rewards are huge. i own an ex race horse and he did't want to race so he sometimes didn't go out of the starting gate and he was too slow. But the horses do have a choice i mean if they don't want to race, they wont.
@Alice6614 I abosolutely haate all horse racing-every kind! I know a ex-racehorse, he was going to be shot because he was not good at it. A healthy horse was going to be shot, just because he wasn't fast enough! Lucky Kathy bought him.
@Horsemadsaddleclub My horse probably would have been sent of to the meat man. He didn't win any of his races and was never placed. so they retired him at the age of three. If it wasn't for the owner of my yard that bought him, sadly he would not be here with us.. which is a really horrible thought as he is the sweetest and calmest horse i have ever met!!
@Horsemadsaddleclub Oh you dont even know that for sure. If you think horseracing is cruel then honestly you dont derserve a horse!, do you know why riding your horse you are also being "cruel" to it
@Alice6614 I get you exactly, every horse is different. My ottb absolutely loved racing, and he was relatively good at it, he started 7 times, won 3 and came second twice, but he injured himself during a race. The owner and trainer tried everything to get him better, but he couldn't race again and so they sent him on to me. I got him for free. He can still have a good gallop, but he couldn't take the pace of racing professionally. I think he misses it, he still likes to race the other horses xD
Dooneys gate fell at Bechers brook and broke his back. Ornais fell at a plain fence and broke his neck. A 3rd horse died too, I don't remember its name. Ballabrigs was severley dehydrated and had to be treated immediatley after the race had finished because his condition was critical. R.I.P
as a retired jockey and owner i must answer that none of us want to have accidents..(forgive my spelling for i am a belgian)but the sport is racing. sadly it ocurs..It happend to me once in a 15year long career as a jockey and my first year as an owner..We do not like loosing our friends believe me.I have a lot of my old horses who have a fantastic after career..2 of them even work with handicap children..so thanks for to the racehorse..and no racing they would stop to exist
A jockey didnt get serious injured in the national this year if you do your reserch then you will find out that peter toole the jockey that got seriously injured on this day actualy got unseated in the first race of the day which was over normal fences. I work in racing and trust me when i say this race horses are treated better than anyother kind of horses, yes unfortuatly horses do die oin the track but that is a very low percentage of horses. that national is part of british heritage.. FACT!!
The major problem is the size of the fields, if yiou watch the whole race the unmounted horses complete the race jumping most fences the race should be limited to the best 20 contenders and some horses in this race never had a chance of winning theyw ere there through misplaced judgement of owneres and trainers.
I am a very big fan of horse racing but the owners here must be really sad to let there horses risk there lifes at this very dangerous race! They might be well looked after but look what Jason Maguire was like smacking the horse with his whip on the home straight after the horse had just jumped tons of jumps that are about the same hight of the horse its-self! In my case i reckon the owners and trainers are just gold-diggers!
at every decent racehorse trainers yard you will see the best stables etc for horses, they live in pure luxury some even have spa's and rehabilitation swimming pools for them, the rumours about racehorses arnt cared for properly is complete and utter bullshit and this years grand national is the only time this has every happened, in all the years it has been running the only reason the media choose to make it look cruel now is cos before, they never had a 'excuse'
DeathKitty123456@ You are ver right my friend! Rodeos are awful and yes sorry about me going a bit everywhere! And I know horses do love getting out there and having a good run! But jumps racing can really hurt horses.
@RMcGO28716 This is cruel? oh i guess you have never been to see pony club games where riders as young as 8 are constantly spuring and whipping their ponies or some dressage riders who basically like their horses chins to be on their chest.
. Don't need to ride to know that the exploitation of any animal for sport is simply wrongI love your patronizing air of superiority like you are going to educate the entire world on animal cruelty single handed.Do you ride & whip your horse to make yourself feel like some superior creature Get stuffed .Horse racing & all that it entails is CRUEL if you visit my city NYC you will probably take a ride through the park no doubt on the back of those poor ponies carts we protest daily shame on you
@RMcGO28716 I don't live in NYC or live anywhere near their.
Horseracing is like other animal related sports..there are the people who want to win/make money be sucessful but their are others who love their animals and give them the absolute best treatment possible. I am not a fan of steeplechase racing but really what is any different about flat and harness racing than any other animal sport?
In case you did not understand my reply All Animal exploitation is wrong & almost always CRUEL !!!!!! Do you honestly believe what you wrote " .there are the people who want to win/make money be sucessful but their are others who love their animals and give them the absolute best treatment possible. Grow up before it's too late . ANimals used to make money are abused PERIOD !!!!
@priyasworld2001 they do want to race, ok rodeos are aweful but racing is great the horses love to run, trust me i know i have a ex racer and he doesn't need telling twice to go, he doesn't even need telling once you get on gras and he WANTS to go, the horses that unseat their riders follow because they want to not because they have to, if a horse doesn't want to run it won't
Thoroughbreds are born to race. It is only due to the National's huge media coverage that animal activists try to use the spectacle to their advantage. Yes it is tragic that two horses perished but the race is not immoral or too challenging. Lets face if we lived in many parts of Europe we would be eating these beautiful creatures with ham and mango chutney. When the National is run on good ground and in summer like temperatures things are bound to happen.
@Gaz060391 TBs are not born to race, we breed and train them to. and whats the difference between eating a pig and a horse? they are both living beings, so are they not equal? I agree with you that people are now standing up and taking advantage of the news reporting these equine deaths. Racing has been a tradition in many countries for YEARS however i do think that we sometimes take for granted we ask these horses to risk their lives for our enjoyment.
I don think its fair to ban the grand-national. Yes it is dangerous, and the jockies go into it knowing that they could come out of it with a broken arm or leg. But for people to say that its animal cruelty isnt right in my opinion, the horses are looked after very well. On saturday's grand national, after the race had finished they got the jockies straight off the horses and covered the horses in water because they were hot. They care so much for the horses, and i dont think it should be band x
i dont like racing i feel it ruins horses, for the thousands that train few actually make it. then they are sold for meat. i know that isnt the case for all but they are sent to markets and who knows where they end up? it really isnt fair and its not worth the suffering of the animals just for the money. scrap the race, itll do some good.
@Jeeeezy101 well if they wernt used for this then i dout they would even be alive in the 1st place sadly :/ there soul purpous is to race, and that why there kept alive.... sad really
@yttihp11 yeah, i know:/ they are such beautiful creatures, the thought of them dying in such a cruel way is too much:| but i read an article about this and it sai even though they were bred to race, the crops andlength of race they are made to run is just against nature. out of 40 horses only 19 finished. allot of them will be badly injured. so upsetting :(
@Jeeeezy101 Just as many no good dressage, eventers, endurance horses and even childrens ponies are sold for meat in countries like Japan and china( :/ )
Its not about the money..trainers,owners,jockeys LOVE their horses and sure there are some who want to win to be well known or for their horse to be considered the best but you get that in ANY sport
@RavenwestProductions Ofcourse they have a choice, Have you ever rode a horse when it wants it's own way? do you think the jockeys are really have any control over the horses?
Honestly...I love 'regular' horse racing, but I'm not sure what to think about steeple-chase, guess I respect that more or less..but the Grand national is a race too long, too hard for the horses. I believe it's the more dangerous race in the world and I wouldn't be too sad if the Grand National disapear.
