@notjohndoe2 You need to SEE them live. I've seen them UMPTEEN times in many different types of venues. The Metro, Old Town School of Folk, Double Door, Taste of Randolph St., (all in Chicago) and they have NEVER disappointed me. Always amazing!!!!!!! These videos do them NO justice whatsover. Go experience them.

@74TheOutlaw I saw them for their all my friends tour, it was pretty good I really liked the movie and they played really well, i think it was their first time in st. louis. but their were a lotta cool subtleties i couldnt pick up on from the videos that, you're right, ijust had to see live..

Califone's intention is (thankfully) to obliterate tired and predictable rock cliches -- the "noise" you complain about makes the melodies shine even brighter in the contrast. I didn't get them when I first heard them years ago, but I could sense there was something intriguing there so I stuck with them, and once I got it they quite literally changed the way I listened to music. If you don't get it, maybe you should ask Sam Beam why he's so enamored with them...

Agreed. I was that way when I first heard them years ago from a dear friend of mine, but as my musical taste continued to grow and I listened to them more and more, I began to understand why I was intrigued on the first listen long ago.

I was sad over the overwhelming negative response at first.  I realized that you like it and that most of the other people that had nothing nice to say are from cities that refuse to appriciate good music.

I think it's because people from "big cities" have "big attitudes" and have to stick their noses up in the air to anything that isn't mainstream and agrees with "omgindierock." Maybe once people grow up, they'll realize what talented musicians the men in Califone are.

I saw these guys last night in Los Angeles with Iron and Wine. They were pretty bad. I'm not against avant-garde music, but these guys seemed to not really know what they were doing with it.

I agree. I saw them in Portland and I was so sick of it after the 4th song. It was like I was like I was back in High School watching kids fumble around with their equipment. I wasn't impressed at all. On top of that, they were all drunk or high. It was bad.

It was too bad, because I liked some of the elements of their sound. Part of the problem was that they seemed to feel a need to have some instrument come blasting in and "mix things up." Seriously, I could have played one of the solos, and I'm incapable of playing lead guitar. And the beginning where they just fiddle with their equipment? Just AWFUL!
