Thanks. THE KING!! Used to see him from 9-3 AM at the Esquire Showbar in Montreal. I couldn't leave. He was that good! He would save Soul Seranade for the end-maybe play it for 10 minutes.
No. Purdie was not with Curtis at the time, however there was a rumor years ago that Purdie was at this show or another Beatles show (depends on who was telling the story) and played behind the curtain along with Ringo in order to "round out" the sound.
Wow, super duper rare footage! And for the record, that's my grandfather, Gene Walker, on baritone sax behind the King. I'm so proud of him having to tour with the greatest Rock band in history.
Fucking brilliant, much better than the Beatles, anyhow, he was fantastic, typical he would have been killed young. Oh well, he and Buddy are reunited somewhere.
Does anybody have/know of a video of King Curtis performing Mr. Bojangles? I have the song on the live album from the Shea Stadium and an even better live version from somewhere else- I would love to watch him play it. It is the most beautiful cover I have ever heard :)

This is the nearest Bernard Purdie ever got to be with anything that has to do with the beatles.
OropherThranduil 1 year ago
@OropherThranduil I don't think that is Purdie. Probably Ray Lucas on drums. I think Purdie joined up about a year or two later.

@kloppedeklop I think that other version of Bojangles is on Live At The Filmore where he opened for Aretha. King Curtis was the Don.
