They probably don't know what tran-^$%6-scendant means! Much less "nonpareil"..I think that this song is great, and I don't care who knows it, even nitwits....
@DocGeorge4U You are probably correct, if you had actually put the letters in that I THINK you might have replaced, they would have understood. As an aside, there was a French boxer, Georges Carpentier?, whose nickname was The Nonpareil. Nice to hear from you.
Funny you should say that because this could be the story of my parents' beginning! My father played guitar and my mother worked at the five-and-dime. Honest!!! He cheated and she forgave. Yes, they had their hard times, but they lasted 49 1/2 years until he died. I couldn't be more proud of them. THEY make MY generation of multiple-divorce people look like a bunch of snivelling whiners who foolishly believe marriage requires NO work. Thanks for posting! It made my day!
You're welcome. My x wife's father was in an small bluegrass band and introduced me to Nanci and a little later to Allions Krauss. Spent many an hour driving between Atlanta and Charlotte listening to it. 10000 Maniacs too, REM etc.
This is truly one of the best songs ever written and perfectly sung by a masterful artist. I did some work at NG's house in Franklin TN and was too shy to say hello to her at the time. She is truly a national treasure.
I have seen her preform a few times and each time she was really great. I think meeting her would be a blast but like you I would be to shy to tell her of my love for the talent she has as both song writer and singer. I share your feelings she is indeed a treasure.
Nanci & John Prine- 2 of our living legends. I agree with an earlier poster that the version I love the best is from Nanci's "One Fair Summer Evening: when she does the intro. to this song. The intro is almost as great as the song; "Ping"!.
Drove across country with some friends from college and we listened to Nancy most of the way. We could quote the part about whole thing about the woolworth store. She is awesome and this is my favorite song of hers. Have to agree that Kathy Mattea did a good job, and in my opinion it was because Don Williams did back up for her.
A friend and I left our little city in BC heading for LA. We tried to drive straight down I5 without anything other than gas and snack stops taking turns at the wheel. We got as far as Bakersfield. After 20 hrs of driving we had to take a break. The only station we could receive was playing this song. It was 1am and it seemed like the warm August breeze off the desert was carrying the song and Nanci the tune. That was the moment I became a songwriter. Thanks for 23 years of inspiration Nanci!
Kathy Mattea did a good job with this song when she recorded it with Don Williams in the 80's. However, nothing beats the feeling in the song by the original Singer/Songwriter. Nanci did a great job with this tune and its one of my favorites from her.
I heard this song many, many times from the cassette player in our car on the long trips I took with my mother when I was child, in the early 1990s. What a lovely song to rediscover after all these years.
Well after that comment westpoint64, nobody could put it better. She's outstanding. I keep looking for the version where she "intros" the song... "worthless plastic objects..."
I was just listening to the version you are talking about. It is off her live concert LP "One Fine Summer Evening" and i believe that it is on DVD so it may pop up here one day.
Perfect. Perfect arrangement, beautiful voice, lovely voice...beautiful poetry, a wonderful story, almost a novel set to music. Gorgeous and heartfelt. A thing of beauty.
I have to disagree on the arrangement part but everything else is true. When Nanci performs this song without percussion it is better, or solo as she did on AllanWo`s posting of her BBC performance.
Ok...I see what you mean...going back and hearing this, it sounds a little too "busy" with the steel guitar and I don't really care for the harmony vocal, either. The Austin City Limits one she did was the best I've ever heard her do with a band, and the BBC one is my favorite of all.
When I stated "perfect arrangement", I was really talking about the way Nanci put the song together...I probably should have made myself more clear. Sorry 'bout that.
Great song Nanci Music is so awesome

When I first here this back in the late 80's I thought that it would be a great theme for a movie.
At the time I though Travolta could be the guy and Julia Roberts the girl.

This woman writes and records the details of our small life ,,,she raises it up to level of universal understanding.
This is love and betrayal, a universal pain that we all know.
Nanci is a chronicler of our lives.
She is relevant, and also beautiful.
