This is my second favorite Bangles song. The first of course is Eternal Flame. I love these chicks. God...the 80's. I think I was 2 when this came out, and I remember my older cousins dancing on the coffee table singing to this with big ass hair wearing acid washed mini skirts and leg warmers lol
This is a great song about addiction. Susanna had an experience about a friend with a nasty cocaine addiction and a very dedicated boyfriend who would have done anything to win the girlfriend over the drug. Awesome song!!! Not sure if she was the "girlfriend" , but, lol, I think she was the "girlfriend", but couldnt say for obvious reasons, especially back then. But its a very powerful song, and very true.
@laurah1150 wow so nice of you - who seem to know all - to explain the innerworkings of the Bangles....thanks, just a question (and to all of these wierdoes on youtube who seem to know the innermost thoughts of the artists) , how do you know what you say is true??/ your ead it where?, or heard while high?, or saw it in the enquirer, or thought it sounds nice? what?? if you had any cred you would have stated it in your story, so if you cant say why, then stop your self aggrandizing shweeeeeet
@fuzzypige222 My information came from an interview Susanna gave to MTV during the height of their career. And I dont get "high", never have. I was married to a drug addict for 8 yrs and thats how I know about addiction, unfortunately. But I didnt feel my credibility would be questioned on YouTube. LOL. But hope that answers your questions.
Nope. Hoffs didn't tell MTV interviewers why she wrote "If She Knew What She Wants", or what it was about, because she didn't write it. She covered it years after it was released by songwriter Jules Shear.
It's not a drug song. It's a Jules Shear song. The lyrics are very intelligent and CLEAR. They made sense to me when I was fourteen; why do you still not understand them?
Nice theory, except this is a cover of a Jules Shear song. It's a song by a guy about a girl. It has nothing to do with the Hoffs or the Bangles at all.
Yo there is a new youtube star/band comming up I just found with an awesome girl singer that should be mentioned here. This band is going to be huge and they have an awesome video. NO joke just found these guys, totaLly worth checking out if you like pop punk rock music…..
I heard of them through a friend through facebook they are called Hey You! I would search “hey you band taking over” or they are on my page… just thought I’d spread the word.
I said it elsewhere. I'll say it again. Bangles had the most profound vocal harmony in the history of music. I think that if someone had encouraged them, they would have stuck it out and really rocked the music world. In fact, they did already. But it wasn't time for them to quit.
"Most profound vocal harmony in the history of music"? The Bangles?
Wow, you sure haven't ever listened to the Beach Boys. Or the Beatles. Or even Barenaked Ladies. Or very much music at all. Never mind The Byrds -- how about birds? The wind? Do you like the sound of the dishwasher running at night? Ever heard a child laugh? That's pretty "profound", right?
@MrOdelay72 Defintely reminded me of the female Beatles. I don't think they understood what they had at the time or they would have made so many more albums together.
@MrOdelay72 I've always thought of the "What if's..." although that's moot. "What if they all could have gotten past their differences... what wonderful music would have been created, songs we can't even imagine." All the same, they added so much joy to my life. That can never be forgotten.
@mydogspet besides the joy, they gave meaning to my life and still make me cry remember those times that never come back. Greetings from Mexico and love in this 2012 ¬¬
The last time I heard this song was when it was popular one summer in the 1980s. I remember going waterskiing and boating. I couldnt get this song outta my mind that summer. Good memories. I wish I could be a kid again. :)
@rootedsorrow I totally agree... funny how The Eagles (who toured with her, as her band, in the early 70s went on to make their own albums and were inducted in 1998. Here we are in 2011 and Linda is now 65 years old. She has an amazing history of musical talent and has helped many other musicians. I can't believe she has not been inducted!
@mikr671 -- Could you really be old enough to remember Hullabaloo and Shindig? These girls were kids in the 60s watching those shows just like I was -- so groovy.
THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!! for uploading this song--best Best BEST ever Bangles tune. I can listen to it endlessly, brings back so many 80s moment for me...also Hazy Shade of Winter
there are some songs that you fall in love with, and then get sick of. then there are those songs that you love, and the feeling never goes away. this song is one of those songs for me :)
I miss the 80's. MTV was cool back then and sooooo many girls made themselves look like the pop stars.. I miss the 80's.... Beach parties, convertibles, and girls were so much bettter looking then the overweight girls today... At least I have the memories to live with....
After having been listening to interview with them, Michael Steele really surprises me about her intellect and ability of comprehension of existence....
Must have been so hard for her, losing both her parents with only one year gap
I think Susanna was in love with John Lennon - (and she definitely had been a better choice than dragoon) - since she is using the same Rickenbacker as he had then...
Hot women + Real talent = One kick ass band and thats the Bangles. Hoffs, Steele and the Peterson sisters were destine to perform together and It is this line up that made them star. Not just Hoffs

Today is Susanna's birthday. I was once trying to describe the prettiest girl I knew in college and the best description I could come up with was "Imagine Susanna Hoffs with unbelievable green eyes". I thought the friend I said this to almost burst a blood vessel in his brain trying to comprehend the thought.
I don't get it, they were SO UNCOOL and yet they had the best melodies in a generation. Mcartney said the only song he wish he had written was Friday on my mind by the Easybeats. I wonder what he would have made of these guys. I had this CD about a week after it came out and I have almost worn it out in the intervening twenty five years, it's still as perfect today as it was back then.
I Saw the Bangles in November at the 2010 "Pretty in Punk" benefit at the Roxy in LA. Although it was a short set about 35 to 40 minutes, it was great to see and hear them. They all look great; Vicki and her Husband John Cowsill, was milling around in the crowd in from of me before she went on. It was a great chance to see them upclose and playing their great music. I notice the audience was both young and older so it seems their music will continue to live on forever!
Great band ever
