Why Can't everyone just speak english.the world would be a better place with better communication. where is the piggin ignition key?? Where is the stereo Player??

The instructor is Mr. Michel Anglade. Hes what I would call a natural born pilot, who has no less than 25000 hours in helicopter, and several thousand of hours in other aircrafts. As you can see on this video and many other ones, he likes to share his passion with us. Thanks to him.
Sorry for mk2efords you should do like bloody french go to school to learn something else..
Yeah...uncle sam doesnt always have the copyrights to whats best....however that dude would have been done if that c20 would have ever decided to "hot start"...unless of course he depends on his instructors hand always being there...by the way, isnt the gas turbine side on a 250-c20 referred to as a N1 rather that an Ng??could be wrong since uncle sam doesnt always teach us the "right way"!!
shouldn't use his thumb...for the idle release..hold the starter with your middle finger right hand, index finger resting on the idle release in case of hot start to roll the throttle closed...LOL..i wonder how much he paid for those lessons...i got paid to learn..good ol uncle sam. HOOAH
Different strokes for different folks. Uncle Sam doesn't always have the copyright on doing everything THE right or best way! As long as you "top" Ng before opening the throttle a healthy C20 won't over-temp.
Basically turbines have a very high combustion temperature (talking between 700 and 1500°C, and they rely on air cooling the internal parts, this maily happens with the turbine spinning which drives a fan at the intake which draws cool air in, at low RPM there is little flow through the turbine, which is why you spin it up with the starter, before you add fuel, without the starter there is even less cool flow and the heat would melt internal parts of the turbine.
So if you let go of the starter, you take away the only possible source of cooling at low RPM, leading to a heat shock, imagine like this, take a lighter and click it and hold your palm close above the flame, you will withdraw it after a while because it gets so hot, but blow gently against the flame, and you can keep your hand there almost indefinitely, the starter does the blowing in the helicopter by spinning the turbine which drives the fan which draws fresh air in.
My first start in the 206 we had a undercharged battery, so the TOT ran up at an insane speed.. I can still hear my instructor shouting "close it! close it!" and me fumbling around in panic closing the throttle, thumb slipping off the starter button etc.. Geez. But everything turned out ok.. Now I'm very paranoid about the TOT when I start :)
I presume that this is in France. The irony is almost inescapable: in the birth place of the Eurocopter A Star, they learn in American made JetRangers.
Well said SDG, but I doubt any of the previous posters are experienced pilots. I'm not; my experience is fixed-wing bush bashing (26 yrs), but I've a few hours in a friend's R-22. One thing with pilots is we're generally very welcoming and warm to visitors. The 'Me Big Arrogant Pilot' crowd are usually poseurs.
That guy's a real good instructor. Though I speak no French; his instructions were clear enough to get a pretty good idea of the process. I'd certainly enjoy flying with him. :)
Hang on matey - not everybody who likes helis (notably the 206) is an experienced pilot! I've watched loads of these start up/take off videos and there always peppered with arrogant comments from experienced pilots. I'm not, but if I was I would never dream of being arrogant/elitist/maverick/Air America etc, towards those that aren't! A friend owns a 206 and I'm fortunate I can go and have the occasional flight now and then. They are wonderful machines and not just limited to those that know!
yep,,let go of the starter while start will cause the tots to exceed normal temps, then you melt the hotbox, and it will cost in the range of 150k,big no no
That's called an hot start, inside the engine (combustion part) the temperature exeeds the normal temps (like megikon said) and that melts parts of the engine down and than you're pretty screwed. Letting go of the starter isn't the only cause of a hot start
If a Sikorsky S-70A would cost round about $70,000,000; I don't think a 206 would cost as much as $1,000,000,000. With all due respect sir, of course. A 2007 Bell 206 cost about $1,600,000; no more than $1,780,000.
A brand New jet ranger (not a long ranger) you can gt for $900K if you get the right deal. A long ranger can go over $1 mil...an AS350B2 was around $1.1 Million new back 3 years ago, today they are worth more I think because of the demand for them. Eurocopter is back ordered of B2's and now B3's are just as popular, but little more expensive.
