its ..all about timeing ..and trail & error... just the other day after nipping up my rocker boxes & carby manifold ...i was runnining hot ... yepi found the prob ...>>> tapit (exhaust sett was tight) .. ..funny it all ways on one side
Make sure you don't have a 2-stroke needle and needle jet. Some early concentrics on BSAs came that way by mistake and some of 'em have gotten into carbs as replacement parts. They ran richer'n blazes and would eventually gas-wash the big end bearings and ruin them. The smaller hole on the the correct needle jet should be on the bottom, and the 4-stroke needle is longer and has three rings around the very top as markings IIRC.
Hi gordonemoore great advice, the needles are the correct ones (three grooves) and believe it or not most of my probs where because of the Rita ignition unit which was not advancing or retarding? I have now replaced it with a Boyer and she runs a lot sweeter now. Looking on the bright side I serviced my carbs :-D
Hi dampowers I am just replacing my Lucas Rita with a boyer ignition and will be posting the vid shortly. I noticed my valves could do with a grind so the answer is a yes :-)
It takes loads longer to do the jobs when I am trying to film it, and the sun is coming out now, but I will do my best to get one done soon for ya.
that would be great i own a 69 trident that needed work the bike is now complete except for some cosmetic i am looking for a bread bin tank and the correct tail light if you look up 69 trident on you tube i am the guy in the white t shirt sitting on the bike it has come a long way since then it is good to see you do what you are doing there are no mechanics that work on truimph"s in the area i have been self taught and been watching the vedio's that you make
Hi Darrin I'm glad you are finding my vids useful, I know they are far from perfect but hope they give the general Idea! I got the boyer fitted last night and now have a spark like a Whales Willy :-D
hopefully curing some of the probs I had in this vid.
holy crap, you guys are so freaking retarted, how many times do i have to say this? the only way to ruin a valve by not running a header is if you are moving! when the cold air hits the hot valve, it shatters or bends. he is not moving, ITS FUCKING FINE!!!
first of all your dumb and your gunna wreck your good motor second of all why are you calling me a retard.... thats just an old beater truck its no good....
Hi alexzanderhill you called me a retard first!! unless I read your post wrong and you meant retard my timing?
I was in the process of doing my timing and I have to remove the headers to access the timing covers, the timing has to be set with the rpm above 3000 RPM so the auto A/R is fully advanced, on the rita ignition unit I fitted 25 years ago. the video also shows the harsh environment exhaust valves have to live in fire and flames and heat are all normal.
Hi alexzanderhill thats OK! just got off on the wrong foot! my biggest danger of burning a valve is down to the petrol I am forced to use! it contains no dinosaurs,
but thats a "green" issue and when the OLD bonnie's where being produced petrol contained nothing but plankton and lead, I run 11.1 pistons and have had loads of hassle (pinking/knocking) getting it to run right, most additives are crap and not worth the money they cost!! a drop of CastrolR in my rapeseed fuel
(or whatever it is the sell me) helps but does not stop the problem. Any suggestions you have will be implemented
Is this some fast track method to dial in your jets? It may also be a good way to warp your valves unless you stuff a rag into the exhaust port as soon as you shut down.
I had the exhausts off as I was strobing the timing, and as they are swept back pipes they run over the alternator inspection and points cover. I just thought I would video it in doing so I saw a lot I would not have seen especially the carb side of stuff.
Hi roadrash998 the carbs I have are the early 928's, and don't have a removable pilot jet as such, it is a pressed in jet, that hides behind the air screw!!
making the jet bigger is no problem, but to make it smaller entails drilling it out altogether, then taping the carb body, in the float bowl and fitting the later changeable pilot jet!!
I do agree with you on your diagnosis, I just don't fancy taking a drill to my carbs (not yet anyway) :-)
Hi roadrash998 I hope I am not barking up the wrong tree, as my Lucas Rita ignition is twenty five years old!!!
I have modded a pair of needle jets(made the cross hole bigger) which I will try in, it could improve the black plugs at 1/2 throttle.
apparently it is common for megaphones to cause a rich spot mid way in carb range, its called megaphonitis??? I have never heard of the mod so I will have to see.
how does it feel on the road? I would say that if it runs correctly with no lapses in power at all levels than it's probably fine. But you probably need to reduce the size of the main jet.
Hi roadrash998 it goes great over half throttle. It has never liked ticking over and very lumpy up-to 1/4throttle and gets better from then on, the plugs are sooty under normal use but on a blast ok.
it may help it run at low revs if you reduce the size of the pilot jet. I had a pilot jet that was too large and it did not like to idle or even run below half throttle. It sounds like the main jet may be fine.
that is so cool, seeing inside

Otherwise, go to a 105 jet.
