Woody Strode was a physical specimen, and a grossly under-rated actor. In the opinion of many, his was one of the greatest physiques ever. He was perfect in his role, but he'd have made a great Tarzan. Imagine him in the "Blade" pictures instead of Wesley Snipes.
I agree 100%. All you need to do is watch "Sergeant Rutledge" to get a glimpse of what he was capable of . If you look at his earliest roles, i.e. "The Bucaneer," they didn't even give him speaking roles! They probably thought, "Yeah, he's got a physical presence, but how could he possibly act?" Boy were they wrong and they probably realized later how badly they had screwed up.
Excellent photography and production values. Mahoney is articulate and believable as Tarzan. Unfortunately he lost quite a bit of weight due to illness and looks gaunt at the movie's end especially up against Woody Strode. One can only imagine what Gordon Scott would have done in the part. Good movie well worth watching.
Since I was a kid, I have remembered the fight scene above the boiling cauldrons. Love it.

The saddest part of this movie was the lack of the Tarzan yell when the bad guy is defeated..
