For some, flying is not a privilege, but a necessity...i.e. Those in Armed Forces, those whose jobs require traveling etc. Not all flyers are on their way to Hawaii for a vacation.
Flying is not a privilege for everyone. Maybe for you, but not for military personnel. They buy our tickets and send us on planes. We still get searched just like everyone else. I'm forced to fly and get searched, so because I signed a contract saying I will defend America against enemies foreign and domestic. I have to have my privacy violated by a TSA agent and get "the same levels of radiation as a dental x-ray" How many of you have gone to the dentist and wasn't required to wear a lead vest.
Too bad my Frequent Flyer Miles don't also cover Cancer Screenings, with all this radiation exposure every time I want to travel, I'll need frequent flyer cancer screenings to check for malignant lumps or unusual lymph activity.
I wonder if the Federal Govt will admit responsibility for all the premature deaths being caused by X-ray over-exposure?
They say it's about the same radiation exposure as a typical mammography or dental X-ray, somehow I'm still not at ease with anything the TSA claims.

I think the governments in the world should invest more in preventing drowning in bathtubs. It's statistically a bigger chance to get killed drowning in a bathtub than dying from a terrorist attack. Full body scans are basically saying: you are guilty before proven innocent.

This is why I NEVER fly if I can help it. I remember having a flight the day after that dude had an explosive between his toes. I was wearing slacks with panty hose underneath...a common practice back then to avoid VPLs. ANYWAY, not only was I required to cut the toes out of the panty hose, but it ALSO gained me a 'special' inspection, which was even more intrusive. I was a 5'2", 105 lb, 50-something female American citizen and was treated like a common criminal. It has gotten even WORSE now!
Just as an example, a woman could easily mould the plastic explosive around her genitals, then cover it with a 'merkin', which is a wig made for the labia. Nobody would detect this, even with a full body scan. There are MANY more ways in which the plastic explosives can be 'worn' without much danger of exposure. Even a 'grope' of the genital area would not reveal the explosive, it would simply feel like a woman who doesn't go for a Brazilian wax! (Or, MANY older and foreign women, including me!)
I have never heard of even ONE instance where any of these procedures have uncovered a terrorist. NOT ONE! Yet, we are to be humiliated each time we fly for no real pay-off at all. This is beyond wrong. I would feel safe enough if all they did was the old scans for metal. Sure, plastic explosives wouldn't show up, but they won't show up on this type of X-ray procedures either. The 'beauty' of plastics is that they can be moulded easily, so can be well-concealed. Ergo, body scans=no help at all.

I am a radiologic technologist, also known as a radiographer, that performs imaging of parts of the human body for diagnosing or treating medical problems. So I think I gave a pretty good grasp on the physics behind the x-ray and the biologic responses. These scanners emit such a low dose that it is not going to cause you to get cancer. Do you fly everyday? I seriously doubt it.

The sad part is that the experts who test these security devices believe that they are not very effective at stopping terrorism, and endorse their use only because it gives people a false belief that they are safe. They know that wheelchairs are often not searched because it will bring negative feedback; little girls too. If you have nothing to hide you'll be fine. There are different types ranging from seeing more and less of the body. The ones in the Netherlands are actually much more acceptable to me than the ones in the United States.

I'm only 13 but I have been on over 100 flights. And I've never had anything happen. I do believe safety is a huge concern with the crazy stuff people do. And I have been through the scanner. It's not that big of a deal. I've been on many flights and have not "mutated" as some one mentioned. So you tell me would you rather be seen naked or get blown into 1000 pieces and die because of some stupid idiot.

One more thing on xrays and scanning. If you are worried about how much exposure you are getting, you should look up how much you get just flying at altitude. You'd be suprised. Look it up and you will see what I'm talking about.

I think the governments in the world should invest more in preventing drowning in bathtubs. It's statistically a bigger chance to get killed drowning in a bathtub than dying from a terrorist attack. Thus it would save more lives if every bathtub had an anti-drowning device attached. Giving up your freedom of privacy is giving up your rights of being a human being. Full body scans are basically saying: you are guilty before proven innocent.

This is why I NEVER fly if I can help it. I remember having a flight the day after that dude had an explosive between his toes. I was wearing slacks with panty hose underneath...a common practice back then to avoid VPLs. ANYWAY, not only was I required to cut the toes out of the panty hose, but it ALSO gained me a 'special' inspection, which was even more intrusive. I was a 5'2", 105 lb, 50-something female American citizen and was treated like a common criminal. It has gotten even WORSE now!

Just as an example, a woman could easily mould the plastic explosive around her genitals, then cover it with a 'merkin', which is a wig made for the labia. Nobody would detect this, even with a full body scan. There are MANY more ways in which the plastic explosives can be 'worn' without much danger of exposure. Even a 'grope' of the genital area would not reveal the explosive, it would simply feel like a woman who doesn't go for a Brazilian wax! (Or, MANY older and foreign women, including me!)

I have never heard of even ONE instance where any of these procedures have uncovered a terrorist. NOT ONE! Yet, we are to be humiliated each time we fly for no real pay-off at all. This is beyond wrong. I would feel safe enough if all they did was the old scans for metal. Sure, plastic explosives wouldn't show up, but they won't show up on this type of X-ray procedures either. The 'beauty' of plastics is that they can be moulded easily, so can be well-concealed. Ergo, body scans=no help at all.

I am a radiologic technologist, also known as a radiographer, that performs imaging of parts of the human body for diagnosing or treating medical problems. So I think I gave a pretty good grasp on the physics behind the x-ray and the biologic responses. These scanners emit such a low dose that it is not going to cause you to get cancer. Do you fly everyday? I seriously doubt it.

The sad part is that the experts who test these security devices believe that they are not very effective at stopping terrorism, and endorse their use only because it gives people a false belief that they are safe. In truth, the most effective safety is a high standard of excellence in the very regular training of all flight crew. Because of such standards that we here in the USA enjoy, flying on our airlines is safer than walking around downtown Seattle, WA. - by a long shot.

They know that wheelchairs are often not searched because it will bring negative feedback; little girls too. If you have nothing to hide you'll be fine. It's highly unlikely they will strip you down to the point of embarrasment, it just isn't effecient or sensical. Considering Osama Bin Laden was just recently killed should examplify the reason they do this.

There are different types ranging from seeing more and less of the body. The ones in the Netherlands are actually much more acceptable to me than the ones in the United States.

I'm only 13 but I have been on over 100 flights. And I've never had anything happen. I do believe safety is a huge concern with the crazy stuff people do. And I have been through the scanner. It's not that big of a deal. I've been on many flights and have not "mutated" as some one mentioned. So you tell me would you rather be seen naked or get blown into 1000 pieces and die because of some stupid idiot.

The Body- Scanner machines don't work, this is common knowledge besides it being all over the news, the panty bomber would of still been boarded if this machine was used on him. This is just an excuse to do a digital strip search of your body. If it was at any other place a strip search would be illegal. As it probably is illegal at the airport as well. Flying is a previlege, not a right. Nobody is forcing anyone to get on a jet. If you choose to board, you have to take the bad with the good. If you don't want a scan, take a bus, train, car, or walk, end of issue. I would rather go throught the scanner naked, if I had to, if it means knowing that nobody else is dangerous

@starzus Those scanners have less radiation coming from them than the average cell phone. If those scanners are giving us cancer, imagine what cell phones are doing to us......it's not as big a deal as you're making it....

Heres the thing...America can do pretty much whatever the fuck they want. they don't care about your rights and I can gaurantee they can find a way around it. If you don't want to be scanned, don't fly. End of story. Yea its a really tramatic experience for some of us, for those people, drive instead. It may suck and take longer but if you really care to protect your privacy, then thats what you gotta do.
