Great upload, thanks. But not sure if it's entirely accurate to say that Tirpitz was wreaking havoc on British shipping, as to the best of my knowledge her guns were never fired against the enemy.
A very well done fillm, that stuck with the truth of what happened when attacking the Tirpitz. John Mills was in several well done war films, including Morning Departure, Ice Cold in Alex, and Dunkirk, and now we are lucky to see most of these films released in West also.
There were some good movies made in the 40s 50s and 60s. Make no mistake. However there is another way of looking at the war movie genre. I was born in the early 60s and to all intents and purposes was raised in a diet of trash mags and war movies, both of which I grew to loathe even as a child. We lived in a poor disfunctional grimy country. We were more and more inward looking by the day and had all 4 feet stuck in the past. Thank God things have changed.
Any sailor in Any navy is permitted facial hair - with, of course, permission. Once an American finishes their Boot Camp - they can request beards and/or mustaches. They are given (usually) a specific time to grow. The ONLY rates that require 100% clean shaven are those in Damage Control or rates requiring face masks (Divers, Chemical Warfare). Clean Shaven is more of a tradition than a general order. Besides - ANY commanding officer can override general orders for their command.
Perfectly legal in those times - still is in reality - just one of those surviving quirks of history. Has to be a full beard, no half measures. Whilst still legal, its getting rarer these days due to the need for air tight seals when wearing NBC masks.
