In case you don't know, the ruler is held up by the force from the hammer's imbalance.

In layman's terms, hammer end goes up, ruler stays up.

pretty simple really.

the hammer head acts as a counter weight, pulling down on the side balanced on the table, providing more down force on that side. the angle at which the hammer tilts, supports the other end of the ruler with enough upwards force to keep it stable. it works because the hammer head is also postitioned close to the point at which the ruler is balancing on.

Wait, I can explain that...

Following the rule of balancing and coulping moment in physics.

The string pull the ruler down, with the force of the hammer head's weight divided by 2 (if we define the bottom of hammer as the pivot point)

for the balancing, M = 0

If the hammer's bottom stay far from the string as 2 times further.

The hammer's bottom need to push the ruler up with the force of 2 times less than string to make it balance rotating.

@off99555 no. in order for your theory to work, the hammer would need to be able to apply a force of its own on the ruler. because the hammer is not in contact with any other surface, therefore not receiving another force to act on the ruler, that is incorrect. its as simple as MEEEE45t0a5t3r said, the way this is set up, the center of gravity of the system is very near to to the end of the ruler allowing it to balance as it does.

@AmericanCorndog well actually it is applying a force on the ruler. the head of the ruler is pulling it down, but since the handle is angled up, it is pushing up, because it is lighter than the head, it would naturally pivot up as if it were swinging, so instead of swinging up, it is blocked by the ruler, but the ruler stays in place because of the weight of the hammer. So, the force of the hammer and the opposite force of the handle, keep the ruler in place. Or, thats my theory at least.

This one is really well known - it deals with the center of gravity - the center of gravity that affects the table moves to the end of the ruler - that way the end of the ruler is stronger.
