I remember this song from when I was little. I'm 45 now. I see now that the Sesame Street writers back then were smoking a lot of grass! Still I think it was very cool that something so off-the wall creative was made for small children.
This was the VERY FIRST thing I ever saw on Sesame Street (back when dinosaurs roamed the backyard)!!! I haven't seen it in decades - it's great to finally see it again! (Although nothing beats the Ladybug Song...)
Makes you wonder if most of these cartoons that Sesame Street did were done by people that were just re-creating the halluncinations they had while doing 8-ball or tar herion.
thank you thank you thank you for posting...i cried and am not ashamed to admit it...when people actually cared about education...sesame street...you made my day night week month year life
stevenlennon12: I only know one song by Dan Hicks (a duet with Jimmy Buffet, "Barstool Boogie"-which I love, btw). Based on that, this could be the same guy. It would be interesting to find out.
I remeber this from the 1974-1975 season the year before I started preschool and still saw in sometime in the early 80's when I was home sick from school. Great memories! Cool Video! SunnyBlonde2118
I'm guessing this particular "O" skit was from '70 or '71..I do remember and yes, the EImagination/Queen song was great..didn't know it was Dan Hicks just as I didn't know that Grace Slick sang the jazzy Spies count songs until recently!
Holy Cow.....I remember this when I was 14......Thank you for posting this...my best loved SS song next to Wander the Witch story....Bless you my friend...
Absolutely awesome! SS doesn't get any better than this. I was in kindergarten when SS started in '69, and this was my favorite "skit". THANKS FOR POSTING!
Now they probably have a "O is for Obama" song for kids.....MAN I miss the 70s. Things were SO MUCH more laid back and people were not so demonic and crazy as they are now.
Life was better back then I think.
I remember the hardest thing I had to endure as a kid in the 70s is who's house on the block to play at when we got out of school. OR - how many neighborhood kids could we get together for a summer swim party.
Now we all have to be medicated to get through each wretched day....
Wow.....here I am 45 years old, and I still remember this very well. One of the better ones simply because it was so bizarre and fun. Thanks for posting.
hey i think this is Johnny Preston,,, the same guy that sang,, running bear and little white dove,,,1959 and sang--cradle of love,,,,,,,,,they are on youtube, go have a listen and then come back and tell me if you too think its johnny preston, after hearing those songs,
Grow and go.Roll over the road..where the goat explodes all the O's and the crow flies low..pass the croaking toad..and the boat floats over the ocean..but the wind did blow..and it started to snow..so the toad went home to the telephone..he spoke to the goat who was eating a bowl of bone potatoes and soap.a rope did float and hook the goat, and the boy climb the stone made of O's ..the O's turned to smoke, and started to float, closer to the bull dozer. Man how beautiful.
YES! Those animations were also two of my favorites as a kid in the 70's. Looking at them now, they seem kinda... trippy and wild, almost too "out there" to be broadcast today. But when I was a kid, they really transported me to a place of pure imagination and wonder. I love it!
According to "Muppet Wiki", this is the work of John and Faith Hubley, along w/ the "Imagination E" cartoon from episode 0001 and on. John was an art director at Disney, working on "Fantasia" and "Bambi", for example. The animation of these cartoons is amazing...
fun to watch for adults too! brings back memories! first few seasons obviously, created by same person who did the psychidelic e segment w/the eagle, queen, easter egg, etc. i do have to say the toad is freaky & drawn & animated just like the real thing! i say this b/c there were lots of toads & frogs around my house when i was a kid that looked just like this one!
Wow what a great flashback. I can still remember all the words and sang along while watching this. LOL It makes me feel like I'm 3 or 4 years old all over again.
Dan Hicks . . . as in Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks? If so, it does seem that "Sesame Street" in its early years used a good amount of San Francisco-based music acts for some of its segments (i.e. Grace Slick on the 1969 number bits, The Pointer Sisters with the pinball number sections).
Yes, as in DH&THL. ("His" referring to the 70s band and "The" referring to the current Hot Licks). I know there is another SS film he does vocals on but can't remember it right now. Will post as soon as it comes to mind. I want to say something about a cowboy, but not sure.
I absolutely love seeing these! I'm 36 now yet the memories come back crystal clear when I see and hear these songs, amazing! I'm suddenly back in my polyester overalls pulling my Fisher price chatter phone behind me...

Does anyone have the cartoon where one guy holds up an "O" and the other guy recites a limerick that went:
"A wonderful letter is O,
It looks like a doughnut, you know.
It has a round shape,
Like a ball or a grape,
Which makes it quite easy to throw."

Yeah, the bandwidth available for linear-track audio on 6-hour speed VHS tape was virtually nothing, so not only do you get bad levels but you also get a lot of hiss and very little high end. This sounds better than the old post, especially considering what you had to work with. I really enjoy the old SS skits and films... keep up the good work!

You guessed it! I videotaped this in 1986 on the slowest speed WITHOUT cable. If I were only more interested in quality rather then quantity, the picture AND sound would be a lot better. Unfortunately, the mixer I have is a rather simple one. I can only increase the volume, not change the treble, base or get rid if the tape hiss!
