Inquiring mounds want to know (since the rest of you have heard lots of other versions): Do the other performers sing *tranquil and thankfill* to make fun of the internal rhyme and, if so, did Sheldon H. actually spell it that way? If not, I vote this the best version ever due to extra helpings of irony and self-defeating repartee.
I used to listen to this on Dr. Demento when i was a kid in the 80's. It's amazing how all the points to this song come back to alignment every 20 years or so.
Africa rioting = Arab spring
Spain = going bankrupt
Texas = currently 75% of state in "exceptional drought"
Florida = Predicted to have a rough hurricane year.
Iran = Students protesting government and rigged elections.
"What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun."
Thank you so much for these B&T videos, been a fan of these 2 since 1960 ....but was too young to have seen this show ! But I know every word on that In Concert album..
nice to know there's still some of out there who love them

Written by Sheldon Harnick (of Fiddler on the Roof fame) and sung by everybody.

Did this song originate from the Kingston Trio?

I'd always thought it was first heard on a Chad Mitchell Trio record.....
