Apparently, the original homes is actually closer to the Downey version. A reclusive, too-smart-for-his-own-good, almost obsessive detective who only gets out to show everyone how much smarter he is than everyone. As with Watson. Originally he was a badass doctor, not a comic foil for Holmes. The more "modern" Holmes was crafted in order to appeal to the younger audiences...so I've heard.

@IreneTeddy well, layton is supposed to be holmes, and luke is watson, as well at chelmey being lestrade and the other detective in the movie being gregson. and of course don paolo is moriaty. makes me love them both all the more. japanese and their romantic ideas!! of course layton and (orignal) holmes are completely different in personality, but what less could you expect of the japanese romantic fantasy!
