My copy comes in this Saturday, Nov 28th btw. But I was wondering since battles are limited, is it hard to come by gold in order to buy new gear?

Not really, you pick destinations on the world map then it travels there and you may or may not have a random type encounter.
Once you get to an area though you're free to explore the map
