@fiat147power You are correct. This is pedantic compared to the other recordings. I like Mravinsky's interpretation but it's also an old format. Before Shostakovich died, he told Rostropovitch to record his symphonies, starting with the 4th, "...because you understand my music." How does he reconcile this one?
Try the complete recording here by Gerard Schwarz and the Seattle Symphony.
those damn fiddles are just sawing away - this is the most God-awful worst sound i have ever heard on this piece. who the hell is this idiot conductor anyway letting the group get away with such crappy sounds?
@bonesteve This is a symphony describing war and fear of losing your life everyday... Did you expect at nice and fluffy sounds? The more brutal it is played the better is the performance. So try reading something about Shostakovici first! :> Cheers
@TonicaQuartet interesting that you'd assume i don't know anything about shostakovich based on a performance-related question i had. whatever, though, i agree that shostakovich is a dish best served brutal - i just prefer my brutality to be garnished with a bit more technical accuracy, i guess. or i could be completely wrong and the conductor/orchestra believe that playing with terrible tone is the equivalent of playing with reckless abandon. cheers yourself ;)
@bonesteve As you can see it`s a recording made with a poor VCR around mid 90`s i think, but if i look at Mravinsky i think i`m right. Now let`s be serious, do you think the "first political" orchestra in Russia in those days is playing with a crappy sound? Too bad you didn`t see Mravinsky live, to see his requirements from an orchestra. And sorry if it appeared somehow that i was assuming that you don`t know anything about Shostakovich
Igor Sharapov is in St. Petersburg. This is Yury Vlasenko--Igor's "twin" in Moscow. He was a Principal Trumpet of the former USSR Symphony Orchestra for almost 2 decades. Currently, he is a Principal trumpet with the Moscow Academic SO under Pavel Kogan.
2nd trumpet here is Andrei Kolokolov, who is a member of the Russian National Orchestra.

Not Mavrinsky conducting. This is Mstislav Rostropovitch.
