i was lucky enough to be at this gig.and the night after too the saturday.played space invaders with lemmy and he bought me a pint.il never forget those days.stayed in london with a mate who went to schol with dianno we were guestlisted both bnights.went to some club after lol and played drinking agmes with maiden.they were normal guys then and still are as far as i can see.janet street porter was getting in the way doing interviews in the marquee lol.never new i was part of history.so lucky.
I think Neil Kay is talking through his ass, if punk hadn't have come along none of these NWOBHM bands would have existed and certainly thrash metal and all the other sub-genres would never have been known. And I have never heard the term 'high energy rock' in my life.
I miss "that" Britain just like I miss "new" bands like that as I miss the Marquee on Wardour St. and all of those fantastic scruffy venues drenched with rock , beer and sweat; it was all about fun and good music. This is a great documentary that new generations should watch to learn and understand.
neal kay says he hates the term heavy metal yet he wears the shirt plus nowadays everyband on the radio classes themself as rock or pop punk so heavy metal is the term to use if u wanna distinguish between commercial shit or real music
@psychomatthias You think your funny with that comment? you have no idea what your talking about and I'm not about to enlighten you. However I do invite you to come over to England and voice that bullshit and see what happens.
This One was really the show how Heavy Metal Shut be how Iron Maiden kick ASS to every band from Europe to America !!!!!!!!!!!! Never can be performed from any band..!! even Maidens !!!!
@joshlockwood69 Neil's just a deliberately contradictory - he's a friend of my uncle's, and he's the same now; a nice guy really, having had a beer or two with him, but he's remarkably good at making you confused by everything he says!
I saw this and it's more proof that metal will never get respect from the sports-obsessed mainstream. I can laugh at aspects of my chosen sub-culture that deserve to be clowned, but I hate it when outsiders do it. However, unfortunately for them, metal will keep on keeping on and I will keep on listening.
Yeah, I know what you mean about ppl who know very little about heavy metal making fun of it. Though today, it is more accepted than it used to be, though it will always be regarded as juvenille by music snobs.
Neil Kay's hilarious intellectualising & reference to Judy Garland reminds me of the Colin Grigson character played by Rik Mayall in the heavy metal parody "Bad News Tour"
just cause sabbath is english doesnt mean the slang couldnt have started here, blue cheers vincebus eruptum is said to be the first heavy metal album, and the first time the term was used in print was an article about humble pie.
That photog must of had a crush, ha, ha! I mean he could've at least shown him from a reasonable distance like the rest of the band, so the viewer feels like he/she's in the audience as opposed to watching a frikkin bj on a mike.
I used to watch 20th Century Box, and I haven't heard the theme tune since around 1981. I didn't know it was a Janet Street-Porter show. I've never been sure about her, but I have to say she's been behind some brilliant television.
i loved for years this performance when theyre playing phantom of the opera.hell yea.i love when those kids are just banging their heads in the audience.then i love that cute lady that you can see in 4:43.she was problably like 20 or 21.now shes gotta be like 48 or something .heheh cute face.

Btw, there was a tv programme a while ago called "In Bed With MeDinner", that made fun of old tv clips.
There is an episode that mocks this Danny Baker documentary, if you search for Medinner s3 ep5, you'll find it.

Sure, Steppenwulf USED the term heavy metal. But it was to describe motorbikes/cars etc. Not the music.
