I visited Koln last year and saw the Koln Cathedral in all its splendor and glory. The view today was such a contrast to the gloom and destruction shown in photos of the area after the war. The fighting was so brutal, but nothing compared to the losses on the eastern front. It sort of amazes me that the world forgives so quickly and allows the Germans to just run free and wild today. The Yankees got enough food in their stockpiles in Europe to feed everyone of their POW's as well as themselves, if they had wanted to. Allied witnesses have confirmed this mass murder, and a few historians have written about it.

Actually those places were not real camps. Without any barracks, latrines and canteens, they were only wet, cold fields with barbed wire and voluntary guards keen to shoot. The hungry and skinny men, many of them sick or injured, didn't last many days or weeks without enough food and even water, and no heating, tents or blankets. They perished in waste numbers, while Eisenhower, aware of the situation, denied to do anything for weeks to save those POW's. Unfortunately, this is no fabrication.

This historian estimates one mio dead POW (mostly in Soviet) and two mio dead civilians in Eastern Germany (after VE day). I think the death toll was more likely 2 mio POW (one mio in the West) and about 4 mio Eastern German civilians, 6 mio in all between 1944 and the fifties.
