Since Dwight Yoakum and Warren Zevon were good friends, Warren often made obtuse comments about Dwight's country version of Zevon's ballad. Actually Yoakum has a great voice. Love this version. Warren liked it too. Yoakum was invited to play on Zevon's last CD,"The Wind". They were indeed buddies.
GG Allin was king of the attention whores. Why respect him? I'd never heard Dwight's version of this until now. He did a great job on it. Late 80's, I'm guessing?
@penetreramera No, I ran across this clip listening to some Zevon. What would make you think that, anyway? Believe it or not, Zevon's version is still the famous one.
@TheStompboxer I just assumed since you started talking about GG straight away. Anyway, I think it's unnecessary to start talking trash about him out of nowhere, it doesn't have to be GG's version VS this one.
@penetreramera "Out of nowhere?" Had you not been following the conversation? I was referring to sethmyrhh's admonition to "not disrespect GG Allin." The fact that he was brought up (not by me) to start with is disrespectful to musicians who got where they did by talent and hard work, rather than GG's cop-out of getting a small degree of fame through cheap shock tactics. It's funny to me how people will decry the state of image based popular music, while hypocritically defending GG.
@TheStompboxer You didn't respond to that comment though, you started yet another conversation about him. I just think it's unnecessary that almost every comment here is about how much people love or hate GG Allin, when it's not even a GG video.
@penetreramera My bad, I thought anybody reading the thread would be able to work through that without me having to directly respond to another comment. I overestimate people, sometimes.
@TheStompboxer And I thought anybody reading this thread would be able to understand how to use the "Reply" button. We all make the mistake of overestimating people sometimes.
Both versions are great. I love G.G.'s and I love Dwight's. But do not disrespect G.G. Allin. If you don't like his cover, don't fucking listen to it. Same goes for Dwight, if you don't like country, then fucking leave. People should have respect for all music, it all builds off each other, and without one kind, we may not have the other. So chill, and listen to some good shit. xD
One of his best pieces of work. True story....I saw him in San Antonio, and yelled for him to sing this song (on behalf of my brother, who was sitting in jail for $20 worth of herion, who also bought it behind a "chicken shack"). Somehow, Dwight must have heard me above the crowd and played it. I think, I'm the ONLY one who knew the lyrics. I've heard many versions on here, but this is the best so far! THANKS

In his diaries, Warren Zevon mentioned seeing Dwight perform this song in L.A. and loved it. I think Dwight has done Warren proud here.
