  • im put off it because its 3 piece

  • You are a master or safety razors!

  • The best for me. Edwin (Mühle) Jagger. Nice video!

  • how do this compere to MEKUR 34C?

  • Hi Geo,

I need your help! I'm still looking for the perfect shave. I'm 30 years old.

I decided try a DE Razor.

My question is: Which DE you can suggest me between EJ 89 LBL or Merkur 34?

Also... need your opinion... to a best shave can i use soap and cream shave togheter or just a soap shave?

After that... please give me the best 3 blades... that blades thay yourself use...

    Thanks

  • Im thinking of getting a edwin jagger DE razor, Iv never used a safety razor but Im sick of razor bumps when I go against the grain whit my gillette fusion, do saftey razors prevent razor burn and bumps? And should I use shaving cream or could I continue to use shaving gel?

  • Hey so I'm thinking of buying this razor and had some questions. I have a fairly thin beard and shave once a week. (i let it get kind of long). Right now I'm using gillette 2 blade disposables and those are fine but I want to make the switch to DE razors. Do you think I should switch or have any advice? Thanks very informative videos!

  • Folks, listen to this man; he's a pro's pro when it comes to shaving. Geo, thanks for the great videos. I'd never heard of three passes before watching your videos.

  • I bought one of these Edwin Jagger razors after watching a few of your reviews. You seemed to really like this razor during the review. I absolutely love it. It's my first double-edge, and I'm glad I switched. Can you recommend any particular brand of blades? I've used Derby and Dorco. The Derby blades seemed to be a bit better but I only had 5 of them. I still have about 80 of the Dorco (got 100 for 10 bucks). I read that Feather blades are great. Do you recommend them?

  • haha first time I started shaving with a safety razor I put it in backwards, I'm like why is this thing not working

  • It came to me that quality of life depends on small things ... like shaving for example. Just to try enjoy simple daily life. Spend some time doing proper cooking, brewing good tea or coffee or just shaving yourselves in a proper way, whithout cheap spray foam and plastic cartridges. Life changes quickly for a better one. I got myself straight razor, proper brush and soap. Suddenly I can't wait for next shave. My life has changed for better.

  • Hey, geofatboy. I'm about to order my 1st safety razor, never used one before but I've practiced the technique of reducing the beard with each pass and preparing my face with some hot steam or preshave oil. Does the 1st razor matter or all that matters is preparation and technique ? I was thinking about starting with an E.Jagger 89 because of it's nice chrome finish.

  • Good vid man! I'm fairly new to wet shaving.(I'm 24)I currently switched about a month ago from using the 5 blade cartridges.I started to get acne when I started shaving a few years back.I never had acne.I switched to wet shaving to see if I could get rid of it. So far I've been using my dad's old school Gillette DE razor but I just purchased the ED89.I have read many reviews where people state that is is not "agressive".Can you please explain what they mean by that? I dont understand. Thanks

  • @paraiks if i may butt in and answer your query. first of all your lucky that you got your hands on a old gillette safety razor. the 1940 gilletter super speed and gillette fatboy are two of the best safety razors ever made. shaving with a safety razor is definitely better for your skin than shaving with a multi blade cartridge razor. ed89 and muhle r89 (both have the same head) are two of the best mild razors, by mild, i mean it is mild on your skin and less chance of getting nicks....

  • @IAmAlwaysRight11 ....and cuts. only a small amount of blade is exposed and it is exposed at a certain angle that when you put the razor on your face and glide it along your skin, it does'nt burn your skin, it feels smooth and comfortable, but you would need to get the angle of the way you hold the razor spot on or you will just be wiping the shaving cream or soap away with the head of the razor...

  • @IAmAlwaysRight11 ....Like i said, if you are after a mild razor then the muhle r89 and edwin jagger de89 are the best and they cheaper than most safety razors too. by agressive, it means that it is the opposite of what i explained to be "mild"......

  • @IAmAlwaysRight11 ...Agressive means that you can feel the razor more on your skin and when you glide the razor across you need to be more careful or you will cut yourself, it is easy to shave with a mild razor, a mild razor is forgiving which means youll have to be careless to cut yourself. Agressive razors "usually" give more of a cleaner and smoother shave but you could get the same result with a mild razor. it's all about your technique and preperation...

  • @IAmAlwaysRight11 ....when I shave, it's like an artist painting or sketching. it's like a work of art! and i am very neat at shaving and take a lot of care and effort and i always get fantastic results! the products you use to get your face ready and the way you do that are more important than the actual razor IMO. Geo rushing a bit and his rinses are not proper rinses and he misses some areas when he applies shaving cream, but he is definitely a very knowledgable shaver.

  • @IAmAlwaysRight11 thanks man. I believe the one I've been using is the 1973 Gillette adjustable. It has the numbers for you to twist right under the head and a black handle. Just an update: my skin has cleared up a lot in the past few days. I still have the occasional pimple but now they're real small and they don't show up as often as they used to. I'm glad I switched to wet shaving.*I'm using an Edwin Jagger DE89, Tweezerman badger brush,VDH Deluxe soap and CO Bigelow and a Walamart VDH bowl.

  • When I first got this razor it felt a little different from my Merkur HD, seemed more mild. The head is just designed a little differently. This razor rocks! I use it more than my HD now. I love it.

  • Hey Geo,

I don't know if you've ever used to Merkur 180 long handle, but if you have, do you prefer the DE89 or Merkur 180?

  • i have tried gillette fusion proglide which destroys my skin and irritates i have very sensitive skin, shall i try this?

  • Excellent video. I just returned to safety razor shaving after about 20 years of using plastic junk. I got a Parker 99R a few days ago (like the dimensions, but I'm not thrilled with the quality), and received an Edwin Jagger DE89L today. What a razor! Though I used a safety razor years ago, I had never used a brush and soap until now. It's an entirely different experience, as well as a much better shave. Not sure why it took me so long, but I'm back! ;)

  • Hello Geo,

As always, you make oustanding videos that teach the art of shaving. Edwin Jagger DE 89 is my favorite razor. I use it with the "Blue Bird" razor blades. I bought 100 blades for $14.95! They are very smooth, sharp and long lasting. I believe they are made in Turkey by Derby. But they are superior to Derby. They have Chromium, Ceramic, Tungsten, Platinum and Polymer coated edges. 5 coatings! Same coatings as Derby, but save much better.

    Thank you.

  • i just purchased this razor today as my first DE razor. i found it looked very nice and came at a good price. This video has assured me that my choice was a good one and that i am likely to not be disappointed atall! thanks Geo

  • Love your videos buddy, straight and to the point. Came off the multi blade cartridges and went with a Edwin Jagger DE89, derby blades, badger brush, alum block, Geo F Trumper skin food, and because i live in London i have direct access to Taylor's of Old Bond Street premisses( a 20 min ride with the car), and I just wanted to say that I will never EVER go back. Such a great experience so far. Thanks for all the info buddy. Will be buying a GeoBowl pretty soon. Cheers.

  • I just switched over to this razor from a cartridge and man is it nice. There is no comparison. The first time I used it I made a mess out of my face but by the third shave I am close to mastering it. I only nick myself 2 or 3 times now but the learning curve is worth it.

  • Which blade do you recommend for the EJ DE89BL?

  • Hi Geo, I never even imagined that shaving could actually be a hobby. After watching your Merkur HD video I have bought one with a packet of Feather razors. Quick question, you really shave fast - it's impressive! I don't even dare shave with that speed - does the angle actually help in gaining speed? (I shave at a 30 degree angle)

  • This is the razor I wan't. After watching your video's and your immediate response to how wonderful this razor was got my attention. some razors you feature you don't give much response to how well it performs rather then the technique involved... which isn't bad too. As being fed up with electric and wasting money with cartridges this will be my first DE razor. Thanks for the awesome video's and stay sharp!

  • Hi geo, I dont know if I should get and edwin jagger or a parker DE razor. What do you suggest?

  • @mayito8581 Not sure if you received an answer or not, but I thought I'd comment. This is purely personal, but I'd get the Jagger or a Merkur. I tried a Parker and didn't have a good experience. As a side point, blades make the razor as well, so buy a sample pack. Shave Nation has a number of sample packs to try.

Here in Canada I use Fendrihan to avoid customs & brokerage fees.

  • 'nevedi c'è er bandana!

  • this was my first razor and when i installed a blade i put the bottom piece in backwards lol...it took me like a half hr to relize what was wrong

  • Hey Geo,

Do you store this razor with the blade still in when you are not using it, or are you supposed to take it out?

    Thanks, great videos!

  • Hey Geo I am no sure what to buy for my firs DE razor,, what do you think is best for a beginner,, the edwin jagger on this video or the Merkur futur???

  • I want that bowl - same color, too! Is it still in the works for sale on your site?

  • Just bought my Edwin Jagger De89bl from amazon for less than 30 bucks. In 2 days (shipping) I'll try my first safety razor shave. I was torn between Merkur and EJ, and this review helped a lot.

Whats the angle you want on your face, and is a glycerin based soap like Col Conk, or a tub of cream like Proraso better for you?

  • HEY GEO!

Great video man! This is gonna be my first time hearing of these types of razors (I know what a dumbass) but I use a proglide and this is a cheaper way of shaving but does it do a better job im looking for a closer shave and when i shave opposite of the grain i break out and my skin gets bumpy, what do I do?? Thanks man for the help I appreciated it!

  • can someone help me i am young and new to shaving and want to use the best to keep skin in great condition, i have sensitive skin and im stuck between choosing gilette fusion proglide or this razor in the vid

  • @BallisticBrawler I just dumped my Fusion Proglide for this razor. I wish I had done it years ago. Get rid of the Proglide and make the switch asap.

  • Superb demonstration! I am trying to choose a DE Razor right now and I was narrowing it down to the Edwin Jagger DE89 but now you've convinced me! Thanks a lot!

  • well...ive gone back and to on whether to order the feather popular or the EJ89...i guess i just got my mind made up for me!

question though. i have been using a Van Der Hagen boar brush (the cheap-o one at CVS) and the williams soap (More CVS cheap-o) and my lather has been pretty terrible...is it me, or just the products im using? i wet the brush, swirl on the soap for 5-10 seconds, then swirl in another bowl for a minute or more...adding water as i go to try and make it look like yours

  • @LeadSlinger89

Its not you. I was using the exact same products and had the same result. I wasn't at all happy with it so I ordered some Taylor of Old Bond Street creme and a tweezerman badger brush. With just a little practice now I have a perfect thick lather.

Watch out, because its a little addicting and I want to try all the other cremes and soaps out there.

  • @hotrod7687 finally got my tweezerman and some proraso cream in the mail. MUCH better. i have the Taylor of Old Bond Street sandalwood cream in the cart now, just waitin to order it for a couple of days...you know, gotta space out the orders a bit so im still allowed to sleep in my bed...lol

  • You have a very nice technique. Your first pass is almost a BBS!

  • I have one of these beauty..

Thumbs up if u are an owner also..

  • Were did you get your shaving bowl at?

  • Hey Geo! Does the DE89 have the same head as the DE86?? Best Regards, Michael Larsson

  • I made the mistake of buying a shave brush the other day when I chopped off the sides of my beard! Had no idea what I was missing out on (never used a brush). Since then I have the DE89 being shipped to me and can't wait to use it! All of these multi-blade razors out these days do nothing but kill my skin... And from what I've heard that makes me a perfect candidate for DE shaving!

  • GEO! "You've Got the Moves Like Jagger!" Keep up the great work.

  • New DE shaver here. I've watched a few of your videos, and I've gotta say, you shave FAST! I hope my technique improves to the point where I can get the shave you seem to as the speed you do.

I have a Merkur 180 Long. I'll work on my technique till it's solid, them I'm moving up to this Jagger, or the Merk 34c. This video makes a strong case for the Jagger! Thanks.

  • Geo nice review as always! What is your personal opinion ,this beautiful EJ DE89 or Merkur Progress.??

    Thank You.

  • Inspired by this video, I have just bought the DE89. Wow you weren't wrong. I have been wet shaving for sometime now with a vintage Gillette adjustable but this DE89 with Feather blade gives me the nicest shave I've had . Thanks Geo. One quetion I've redad about a shaving cream called Green Pond, have you tried it and where can I get it Love your videos

    Mike UK

  • How do you think this razor compares to the Feather DE? Thanks for the great videos.

    Steve

  • I love it when he says "clear off the runways" i'm going to try and fit this in general conversations.

  • reading the forums around the internet it seems like everyone is in love with this razor.. i need to buy one

  • Hey Geo

I received my shaving kit last week. I'v had a couple of shaves so far its great. I have a few questions though. How often should i change my blade? I currently shave ever third day or so. Is it possible for a badger brush to cause acne?

All the best Geo from Melbourne Australia

'There's no school like the old school'

  • geofatboy, would you recommend this for someone who never used a razor before?

  • @ilovedragons

Absolutely, it's an excellent Starter razor.

Check out the YOUTUBE SPECIAL STARTER KIT at ShaveNationdotcom.

Everything you need to get started, quick and easy!

    Always Same-Day Shipping!

    Geo.

  • @geofatboy Love your videos. Curious what type of shaving cream you used (the white jar with no label?) Thanks and keep it up!

  • @ilovedragons Yeah I just started with this razor. Absolutely amazing. Highly recommended

  • just had my first shave with my edwin jagger de89 with a astra blade. it was fantastic better than my fusion proglide btw could you do a review of mitchells wool fat shave soap it would be greatly appreciated

  • @fahimsultan93

I think I have a tub of Mitchell's here, I'll put that on the to-do list!

    Thanks,

    Geo.

  • @tommyrazzleisback

    Both are similar shaving razors.

    Non adjustable and smooth.

    Excellent for every day use!

Try an adjustable if you want to really mix it up. Progress, Futur, Vison, etc.

    Geo.

    Geo.

  • Hello Geo,

Thank you for great videos. After 30 years I am throwing away the Gillette so am new to safety razors. Which one should I get as my first? The Edwin Jagger DE89 or the Merkur HD 34C? Also, is it true that the head on the DE89 is the same as the Muhle R89? Best regards from Melbourne Australia.

  • @fjs0809

    After 30 years?

    Nice!

Any one of the razors that you mentioned will get the job done with no problem!

if you like gleaming chrome, go with the EJ DE89!

    Yes!

    Geo.

  • hello mate , I purchase the Edwin jagger DE89 as ur previous massagee advice to me and IIT WAS REALLY GRAET im so happy and i want to thank u for that it dose excatly as u said in ur video . so 1000 thank u mate.

  • @baghdadx

    Nice!

Glad that you like the EJ DE89 Razor!

It's a beauty and not too expensive!

    Geo.

  • @geofatboy how often do u need to replace these razor blades

  • have you tried the dermalogica shaving range? ive been thinking of buying their starter kit..

  • @immandrew

I have not, but if you try it, let me know how you like it.

    Geo.

  • hay geo great video im thinking of getting one of these. im only 18 and im thinking seriously about getting into DE shaving. what blade did you use of this shave

  • @fahimsultan93

Most likely a Feather or Astra blade.

    Geo.

  • Is this more aggressive than the HD 34CC? Good razor to use after the Merkur? Been using the HD for a year, thinking of getting something a bit more aggressive but not too aggressive. Thanks in advance Geo. Legend.

  • @BurnMyEyes0107

The HD34C and EJDE89 are pretty similar as far as aggressiveness.

If you want something more aggressive, look at the Merkur Progress, Futur, or yet more aggressive, Muhle R41.

    Geo.

  • Hi geo i bought De89ba11. Nice shaver however i screwed myself with buying the derby extra razors along. Blades tug and are just plain awful i bet you could get a better shave with a picece of paper. I used wilkinson sword razors before and despite the fact you could cut yourself more easily they were smoother. What is your opinion on these blades?

  • @Thindza

Check out the video I just uploaded where I'm shaving with a MUHLE R41...... Using the Derby blade that comes with it.

    No problem whatsoever.

Try a blade sampler pack and test drive different blades till you find one that suits you.

    Geo.

  • @geofatboy

thanks for reply Geo nice video. Wow i couldn't believe you were shaving so smooth with a derby. I bought Gillette Platinum razors (former so called swedes) and they are fantastic. No tugging no pulling I recommend them to anyone who hasn't tried them yet. Haha and don't buy in bulk if you didn't first try the blades.

  • @Thindza

    Thanks for the tip!

    Geo.

  • also my second time shaving i felt again that i feel on the de89 that im taking off most of the cream with the piee of the razor with the rivets under the blade in stead of the blade. should i get a different tpe of razor?

  • @robgutz12

Are you sure you have it assembled properly?

    G.

  • cut the hell out of my self with first time using parker shavette (i think about 17 nicks) then first time using saftey a few days later just used this one and best shave ever! never going back to cartridges! but not as close on the neck as on the face any suggestions?

  • @robgutz12

Hydrate, Lubricate, use a quality cream and a good brush to apply it.

perfrom several light passes on your neck area.

Try a pre shave oil or gel.

You may not achieve a perfect shave when switching from one razor to another.

View my video on Face Prep and pay attention to your blade angle.

Do not apply pressure as you would with your multi-cartridge razor.

Give your self, and face several shaves to become accustomed to this new shaving method.

    Geo.

  • Awesome video bro!

  • @amehta

    Thanks my friend!

    Geo.

  • I'm new to DE shaving, havent even tried yet but after research I have narrowed down to 2 choices.. The Edwin Jagger lined (same as your one but lined and engraved) or the Merkur slant 37. I don't know!! The Jagger is cheaper (£20 compared to merkur £30) and being on budget that matters. both have excellent reviews. I just can't decide, what would you say is better?? do these give a BBS on the neck area, I find that can be a problem with the gillette razors. sick of expensive gillette blades.

  • @dageezerboi

If you're just starting out, I'd go with the Edwin Jagger first.

Once you (your face) become accustomed to this new method of shaving, then you can look to expand your horisons and pick up a Slant Bar or an adjustable that's more aggressive.

    Geo.

  • @exsigint

Try some other blade brands, Derby, Shark, Astra, Big Ben, etc.

If it fits in your budget, the Feather All Stainless is a fantastic Safety Razor.

    Geo.

  • Hello Geo i'm throwing out the Gillette multi cartridge which i have been shaving since i war 13 now i'm 21. I was thinking of getting a merkur 38C long handle because i have larger hands is there a difference with the grip of the chrome long handle and the barber pole? Is the 38 C a good starting razor? Your clips are very enjoyable to watch and they are informative. There's no school like the old school. All the best from Melbourne Australia

  • @jrk8

You started shaving when you were 13?

I think you might have me beat!!!! LOL!

The 38C will be an excellent razor to wrap your paws around and hold on to comfortably.

Whether you choose the chrome, black, blue, red, etc.... You will be able to perform a nice BSS.

    Baby Smooth Shave!

ShaveNationdotcom.... shiping to the land down under all the time!

No school like the old school! Love it....

    Geo.

  • @hairyballs68

    Enjoy the DE89!

I don't believe the numbers have any significance....

If anyone knows otherwise, let me know.

    Thanks,

Run the Proglide over with a Sherman Tank!

    Geo.

  • I also have an Edwin Jagger 89. I am very pleased with it! Looks great and works great!

  • @swizzletik

And a fine choice it is!

    Geo.

  • @geofatboy hey im 18 and i have pretty rough facial hair... what would you pick our of a safety and straight ?

  • @JordanEvans3794

Merkur Progress or Slant Bar and a Boker Edelweiss.

    Geo.

  • I've recently started getting into the wet shaving world and decided to order this razor a few days ago. After seeing this video I'm glad I ordered it. Thanks for making this video!

  • @Juggler1097 Update: I've been using this razor for about 3 days now, and it's gotten me great results as far as closeness goes. Since I'm still in the beginner phase, I do get several cuts, but I'm sure those will fade as time passes and my skill increases. Love your vids; keep up the great work!

  • @Juggler1097

    You know it!

Your shaves will definitely improve over time with practice.

    Thanks for the kind words.

    Geo.

  • @Juggler1097

Report back on your progress after a few shaves are in!

    Geo.

  • @geofatboy Update: It's been just over a week since I got the 89, and I'm getting a lot fewer cuts now. Closeness is still great, just 3 passes WTG, but I still have irritation on my neck. Heard it might be the blade (Derby) so I'll try some different blades when I run out. Still love the razor though!

  • @Juggler1097

    Good report!

Get your razor around some different blades and see if your shaves improve further.

    Great Razor, I agree!

    Geo.

  • @geofatboy I've been using the Shark chrome blades and have been amazed at their performance. They will definitely become part of my regular shaving arsenal. Super sharp, forgiving, smooth, amazing. Yesterday I had my closest shave ever with them. At this point cuts are few and far between, so I can really judge a blade based on itself not my skill. Still love the EJ! Great razor, great blades.

  • Thanks for the great videos. How often do you change the blades, and also what would you suggest is the best 'type' of razor for shaping a beard?

    Thanks

  • @opportunityinchina

    Thanks, every 4-6 shaves....

    Straight Razor!

    Geo.

  • i agree with u about 5 blade stuff. thanks for shearing a good tips

  • @baghdadx

    OK Thanks!

    G.

  • Hi Geo,

    Is it this razor aggressive?

In a scale 1 to 5 (like merkur progress) which number you give to the aggressivity of this razor?

Thank you so much for your work!!

  • @bond7666

This would be somewhere in the vicinity of a 3....

More aggressive than a Parker 22R and less aggressive than the Progress, I'd say.

The Progress is adjustable, that gives you the option of dialing up or down the aggressiveness of your shave.

    Geo.

  • Hey Geo,

Just wanted to thank you with the tip you gave me a few days ago with my second and third pass. I kept my face hydrated throughout and did the passes like you suggested. It worked like a charm. I have no irritation and even better, no cuts. Just a smooth face. You are the man Geo. Thanks again

  • @mayito8581

    Excellent!

I'm glad you got it sorted out.

    G.

  • Is it better to shave with a safety razor or a straight razor?

  • @zambimaru

    Yes!

Whichever one you prefer that provides you with a satisfactory shave is the one that you should use.

If you are a newcomer, start with a Safety Razor, then once you become accustomed to shaving with that, make the jump to a straight razor.

    Geo.

  • Hey Geo, I got a question about my second and third pass with my EJ D89. The first pass with the grain is smooth. I dont get as close as I would like so I do a second pass accros the grain. This is the issue because for some reason my neck gets very irritated and extremely red. I apply very little pressure and yet it happens almost all the time. I get cut also as a result and makes me question a third pass. What can I do brother?

    Mario

  • @mayito8581

    Hi Mario,

Be sure to properly hydrate your face and neck area with warm water.

Try going With The Grain / WTG, then brush warm water on your neck again, lather up and perform another WTG pass. See how that feels....

    If satisfied, stop.

If you feel the need for another pass, brush water on again, lather up, and go against the grain gently.

    Hope this helps!

You may also want to consider switching blades, and/or applying a pre-shave oil or gel prior to shaving cream application.

    Geo.

  • @geofatboy

Thanks for the quick response Geo. I will certainly do what you recommend. Thanks again brother

    Mario.

  • @geofatboy How do you brush water on your face if the brush has lather in it already? I thought pre shave oil damages brushes because oils make the badger hairs less able to absorb water/moisture.

  • @sumitson

Use a second brush, or apply the hot water to your face before you lather up for the first pass.

I like to use the Tweezerman brush because it's a bit smaller.

Apply your pre-shave oil with your fingers and massage it into your beard.

Shampoo your brush on occasion to clean out the bristles.

    Geo.

    Geo.

  • @chicagobanana11

    Thanks Sean,

Check out my video with the Gillette Super Speed which is devoted to shaving the neck area.

There is a great solution to the Protruding Adam's Apple dilemma.

    Hope helps you.

    Take care,

    Geo.

  • @JohnCollins3

    Hi John,

    I can relate....

My Brother performed a shave-off between the Merkur HD (which he had been using daily for a year) and the Edwin Jagger DE89....... Both loaded with Astra blades.......

The result: The HD has been banished to the medicine cabinet and the DE89 now is called upon daily!

Looking forward to meeting you and hopefully lots of other Wet Shaving Aficionados in November.

  • sorry for the noobish questions Geo... Would you recommend for or against an adjustable DE for a new wet shaver? Is the EJ D89 a more or less aggressive shave than the Gilette Slim Adjustable?

  • @pipetech26

If you start with a non-adjustable razor as a beginner it takes the adjustment factor out of the equation.

You can just concentrate on honing (pun intended) your technique and perfecting the moves.

If you start with an adjustable you will be tempted to play with the settings, then you bring the entire adjustment question into play.

Too high? Too Low, Just right???

I want to leave the final choice up to you...

I learned on a 1959 Fatboy and then expanded into everything else!

    Geo.

  • What is your favorite DE Safety Razor on a budget?

  • @pipetech26

    You're looking at it!

Either this EJ DE89 or a Merkur HD.

Great razors for not too much cash outlay!

You can't go wrong with either one.

But, if you like gleaming chrome.....

    Enjoy.

    Geo.

  • thanks geo! your video persuaded me to get the jagger as my first DE safety razor. shaving with this blade reminds me of when i used to stand in the bathroom with my grandfather as a child and watch him load up is safety razor and "go to work." keep up the good and informative work, and i hope to buy from your site very soon!

  • @darkjedi04

    Great memories!

See if you can find out what he did with his old razors....

They'd be some good keepsakes for you!

    I'm ready when you are...

    G.

  • @geofatboy i hate to bother you again, but i had a quick question. i shaved for the third time today using the de89, proraso cream, and the derby razors that came with the purchase. when i go for my second pass against the grain, i tend to get a few minor nicks. is there anyway to eliminate this? better blades maybe? i like going against the grain on the second pass because it gives me a closer shave. your expertise and insight would be most appreciated.

  • @darkjedi04 Try this: Lather up: 1st. Pass: WTG With The Grain/North to South Lather up. 2nd Pass: XTG Across the grain (nose to ear) Lather up 3rd. Pass: XTG Across the grain (ear to nose) or: 3rd. Pass: ATG Against the grain South to North. Progressive Beard Reduction my friend! That should help. Geo.
  • Wow! I am getting me an Edwin Jagger. Perfect shave geofatboy. Not one nick or cut. Wish I can do that. Maybe a little more practice should do the trick.

  • @mayito8581

A little knowledge, practice, and perseverance is all it takes!

    Enjoy.

    Geo.

  • today i actualy got very good lather from praraso i think my face had less hair then a babys butt no lie and i think the de89 will be my next purchase i want to switch to a heavier razor than my 22r nothing wrong with the 22r at all but i want to switch it up also what is your top 3 safety razors keep up the good work pce

  • @kantelier

DE89, Merkur HD, Merkur Progress, Futur, Feather All Stainless....

Any of the above will be great choices!

    Geo.

  • Well I'm still happy after 2weeks shaving with my Edwin Jagger and after trying the derby and feather blades I find the feathers far better

  • @simonbb1328

If you like the Feather blades, also look into the Astra blades. They should work well for you.

    Geo.

  • What blades do you use, and are there any benefits to the octagonal handle model?

  • @devilpup1992

I switch it up between different blades....

    Feather, Astra, Voskhod, etc.

If you prefer the feel of the Octagonal razor in your hand, then it's right for you.

It's really a matter of personal preference what type of barrel or handle you like....

Long, short, thin, fat, knurled,, smooth, chrome, gun metal, .....

My friend Aaron puts a thick rubbery grip from a ball point pen over one of his razors to achieve a better grip on it!

    Whatever works for you sir!

    Geo.

  • Just had my first DE shave a couple hours ago with this very razor, and it was terrible. First I dumped the lather and started over three times trying to get it how it looks in the videos, and I finally got it right. Then the shaving started, and it felt alright but no hair was coming off. Three passes and I looked the same as when I started. Went back to this video to see what I did wrong, and it turns out that I put the middle piece on backwards. Thanks geofatboy. Wouldn't have noticed.

  • @mangusrah

    Persistence Pays right?

Your shaves will only get better now!

    G.

  • @geofatboy Well, if you put it together backward like I did, there's practically no blade at all. It's absurd that I didn't realize until afterward that something was wrong. But I tried again this morning with the razor assembled properly... and I'm so happy I bought this stuff.

  • @mangusrah

    Ahhh! That's funny

I only say that since, on occasion in a 1/2 awake state, I've done the exact same thing!

Once I took a swipe and felt nothing being sliced off, I immediately knew something wasn't right in River City..

No worries! Just a small heavy equipment malfunction!

Reverse it and you're good to go!

    Geo.

  • **derby blades included, also bought feathers to try later. Wish I'd have bought this razor sooner. Very happy

  • @simonbb1328

I would never say "I Told You So".....

    Oh wait, I just did!

    Enjoy your DE89.

    Geo.

  • @geofatboy

Well my edwin jagger de89 arrived today, looks like a piece of art and has a very nice weight. Previously My intro into de shaving was a cheap pharmacy own branded de razor which cut me all over lol. My stubble grows quickly and is hard, previously leading brand multi blade cartridges would blunt after 2 shaves. Iv just finished my first shave, 3 day growth with my brand new edwin jagger de89 and WOW!!!!! Baby smooth, no cuts and with 4 passes. It glided smoothly over with the derb

  • @simonbb1328

    A Thing Of Beauty!

    Thanks for the comment.

  • @F21Predator

They are both excellent razors and you can't go wrong with either of them!

I'll just say that I gave my Brother an Edwin Jagger DE89 a couple months ago...

He tried it and now uses it religiously!

It has knocked his Merkur HD back into the medicine cabinet! LOL!

Both are excellent shavers, the DE89 wins by a mile as far as eye candy is concerned!

    Find them both at ShaveNationdotcom.

    Thanks

    Geo.

  • Will do geofatboy, thank you and your videos are great

  • @simonbb1328

    Thanks!

    G.

  • @control735

    Excellent Choice!

    Great Razor/Great Shave!

    G.

  • Thanks SS247 I have one on it's way with a sampler pack

  • @simonbb1328

Let me know how you like it!

    G.

  • EJ 89L is my weapon of choice..

  • @SS247

    En Garde!

    LOL! :)

    G.

  • I'm new to de shaving and have tried with an un branded razor and am very impressed with the results compared to my old gilette fusion. I am wanting to get a better razor but I am unsure wether to purchase the d89 or the Futur. I shave pretty much every day. Which of the two is better and why? Thank you

  • @simonbb1328

For a new safety razor shaver, I'd recommend the DE89...

It's nearly half the cost and it has a design that is easier to maneuver than the Futur.

Great balance, great shave, all at a reasonable price.

    Geo.

  • While watching this video again... I was reminded I really did drop my Edwin Jagger DE89 on the floor.. and it has suffered nasty dent in the handle... and it is really tragic just like you described...

But the great thing is I managed to get a replacement handle from The English Shaving Company in UK for a fees though, it happened because I was trying to hold the razor away from the head which is something I seldom do, and your method of holding it really the correct way.

  • @willyeo

Ouch! I hate when that happens!

I'm glad you were able to procure a replacement handle for it, and that you didn't injure your self when you dropped it.

For future reference: Don't try to grip the razor form the head.... :(

    G

  • Do a proglide video.

  • @Shogun1236

    Someday... :)

  • Love your vids. Great for reviews and shaving techniques. Started wet shaving with DE razors after watching your vids, and love the feel of it. Thanks

  • @migukirk

Welcome to the new (old) method of shaving!

You can now look forward to shaving instead of dreading it as a tedious daily ritual!

    Enjoy!

    Geo.

  • Watching the video and a few others by Geo really convinced me to purchase a DE89 a nice badger brush and sandalwood shaving cream. Perfect job in these videos, and best of luck to you Geo! This is better than the knowledge a dad passes to his son.
