No, Thatcher herself only closed down a few mines and Harold Wilson closed some himself so it can hardly be blamed on Thatcher.
What Thatcher did was stop a very unprofitable business. It needed constant subsidy from the government to run. Why aren't there any private ones left? Because they don't make any money.
If Thatcher didn't stop the useless nationalisation this country would be far worse now than it is.

it's alright saying that, there are still many unprofitable businesses that not only government subsidize but also own in some cases.
was it worth it? we're still feeling the effects of it with all the depression and poverty in the north.
Whether it was right to do so or not the north was still destroyed - it's main export and industries were shut down. not arguing against you just stating a fact.

But many governments shut down unprofitable businesses, and at that time those mining and steel works were not helping the difficult economic problems so Thatcher really had little choice.
She was not evil, she personally wrote to every family that lost a member to the Falklands war - that's not evil.

ok i accept your argument - fair point, personally going to vote tori's, they have new polocies on things like education, if you've seen the education reform plan looks good. and the plans for healthcare to veterans

I'm glad we agree :P. I think hardly anyone can say that what this country needs now is another 5 years of Labour. We need real change and not the kind of damaging change the lib dems or any other fringe party would bring so I hope there is no sentimentality in getting rid of the clapt out Labour Government.
