@forkisfaster the restaurant i work for holds ridiculously high standards, by doing so our average tip percentage for every server is over twenty percent. i'm obviously not saying that we deserve twenty percent or more if the service was shit. it just pisses me off when a table makes sure to personally thank me for the great experience and comment on how wonderful the service was and then leave ten percent or less. verbal tipping is great, really, but it sure doesn't pay the bills.

girl, you need to move to a state where they can't lower the minimum wage based on job description. In plenty of places, you get paid $7-$9/hr minimum wage.
When I lived in philly, servers were gettin $2/hr and I thought it was ridiculous that I felt lucky making $4/hr
Youtube needs a "love" button for vids. I work at a small town restaurant but I make $4.50 an hour during the lunch shift. However, since I don't work at a franchise restaurant and it's in a small "country ghetto" town a lot of people obviously don't know how to tip. Even some of the regulars we get don't leave very good tips at all! I give 110% every freaking day but it doesn't seem to be enough for some people. I have these city guys come in and get lunch for around $6.00 and they leave nada.
That reminds me of car sales. It's complety commission and no base salary and assholes will go to the dealership and waste your time driving a bunch of cars then running out like a bunch of bitches instead of negotiating the price.

i have been a chef in a many restaurants for about 12 years and have rarely met a server that didnt make at least 500 dollars a week. in fact if my wife comes home and hasnt made 200 dollars cash for one days work she had "shitty tippers". my god its bringing people food and drinks not brain surgery. most cooks take home about 350 to 400 bucks a WEEK, ive seen a lot of servers do that in a couple days and get it in cash. it bothers me when servers complain asbout how much money thery DONT make.
@bluesman207 You have been a chef but obviously not a server. I have worked in all aspects of the service industry. Waiting tables is by far the most stressful. When you are in the kitchen you do not have to deal with the customers and servers tips are affected by screw ups in the kitchen.
Oh and for the record....you all may think its your right to eat at our restaurants....no....management and the server reserves all right and we can refuse service :) eating and drinking in our establishment is a privilege...not a right :)

For all of you people who are "against" tipping and think we should do away with it, consider this: if this country decided to eliminate tipping and pay servers more hourly instead, yeah the customers might save money on the tip, but the restaurant has to offset the extra money that they now have to pay servers. so that sandwich at applebees that is $9.95 now costs $16.95. and that steak at outback that is $19.95 now costs $34.95. so think of that next time you groan about having to leave a tip

Waiters should get paid much more than minimum wage, customers should get charged accordingly. Any extra tips would just be bonus money for the waiter. Then, you would see a change in the quality of food and servers. Anything less less than this set-up is taking unnecessary risks with your health and another good reason to eat at home.
Food prices are growing rapidly, so 20% is quickly making it obscene to tip in some cases. I like to tip, and I'm a good tipper, but I dont' go by %'s anymore.

My starting wage 20+ yrs ago was $2.13 I now make a whopping $2.65 per hour. If you can't afford to tip then don't go to a sit down restaurant.

I do normally tip 20% for good service. However, the problem of tipping should not be laid to rest at the feet of the patrons who pay $8-12 for appetizers and $15-24 for entrees (that's at a regular chain restaurant like Applebee's, etc.) If the restaurants want wait staff but don't want to pay a normal hourly wage, they should include a minimum 15% tip fee in the bill for all tables and state so on the menu, adding that additional tips for excellent service are appreciated.
hfurjiskkr5 - i used to be a server, and just fyi, 5 tables and hour @ 4 dollar tips, DOES equal $20 per hour BUT sometimes your shifts are only given to you in couple hour intervals. Not to mention, you may only have enough customers to fill your tables twice in that day. It really is important to tip accordingly, and to not under tip, even if you think it was poor service. Some people consider being out of something, or food taking too long, a servers fault. Sometimes its out of our control.

In this economy I spent a year looking for a job in my field, but because I have experience in restaurants (the only way I payed for college and my graduates) a serving job was all I could get. I was fresh out of school and no one in my field would take me. That being said everyone should tip, because if there were no servers so much for eating out.

1) The restaurant is stiffing you. Yes, some people don't tip because they are given the choice, and they're horrible people. But if you don't make the NORMAL minimum wage then you must be paid the difference between that wage and $2.13 by your employer BY LAW.
2) The restaurant could auto-gratuity. Going after the restaurant is much easier than going after the masses. Mailmen give us service, but we don't tip them, and that's the industry's fault.

if you are at a restaurant, and you think your server did a good job, tip them accordingly. and more often than not, bad tips are from people who have no idea that they should be tipping in the first place. before you judge service, be there and see first hand how it is

lol i've wanted to come home from work and make a video but i haven't... GET IT ALL OUT!!! I feel ya! I use fuel (usually 100 miles a day) everyday to bring people hot meals and i couldn't tell you how many times i've wanted to rip their damn heads off!!! For a month I averaged 4% per delivery... and they wonder why 5 people have quit in the last month. Just the other day i delivered $114 worth of food and they gave me $115 and said "keep the change". I almost lost it...

On another note, I have visited a restaurant that has a "no tipping" policy. Apparently they pay their workers at least the "standard' minimum wage. Many of their waiters are even nicer than a lot of waiters I've dealt with in restaurants where you are expected to tip.
This is a good video. I do feel, however, that some servers have a sense of entitlement. If you give crappy service, you don't deserve a tip (I mean 0%). However, if the service is decent, good, or excellent, a tip should be offered accordingly.
Think about the 100% commission salesperson, though. You visit their store, waste their time, then go buy somewhere or something else. These people are making $0 per hour. That's a lot worse than $2 an hour...

I think a very important thing to remember is that when you get your bill, that bill is for the food, but you havent paid for the service. If you don't want to tip, order your food to-go. A tip is based on service, which means you pay for the service. No one deserves the service you recieve at a restaraunt, thats why you have to pay extra for it. It's the same concept of when you take your car to the mechanic, you pay for the parts, and then you pay for the labor.
YOU need to understand that if there is a $100 pay tab, a tip should COME from that, complain to your BOSS, not the customers, I understand the shitty wages and understand that the tips may be shitty, so then GET ANOTHER JOB....?, that's what you signed up for, deal with it, you accepted the job, technically, we don't even HAVE to tip, although yes that's horrid, but its technical, its not required, so although its understandable, complain and get the word out to your EMPLOYER

Youtube needs a "love" button for vids. I work at a small town restaurant but I make $4.50 an hour during the lunch shift. However, since I don't work at a franchise restaurant and it's in a small "country ghetto" town a lot of people obviously don't know how to tip. Even some of the regulars we get don't leave very good tips at all! I give 110% every freaking day but it doesn't seem to be enough for some people. I have these city guys come in and get lunch for around $6.00 and they leave nada.

i have been a chef in a many restaurants for about 12 years and have rarely met a server that didnt make at least 500 dollars a week. in fact if my wife comes home and hasnt made 200 dollars cash for one days work she had "shitty tippers". my god its bringing people food and drinks not brain surgery. most cooks take home about 350 to 400 bucks a WEEK, ive seen a lot of servers do that in a couple days and get it in cash. it bothers me when servers complain asbout how much money thery DONT make.

For all of you people who are "against" tipping and think we should do away with it, consider this: if this country decided to eliminate tipping and pay servers more hourly instead, yeah the customers might save money on the tip, but the restaurant has to offset the extra money that they now have to pay servers. so that sandwich at applebees that is $9.95 now costs $16.95. and that steak at outback that is $19.95 now costs $34.95. so think of that next time you groan about having to leave a tip

Waiters should get paid much more than minimum wage, customers should get charged accordingly. Any extra tips would just be bonus money for the waiter. Then, you would see a change in the quality of food and servers. Anything less less than this set-up is taking unnecessary risks with your health and another good reason to eat at home.

My starting wage 20+ yrs ago was $2.13 I now make a whopping $2.65 per hour. If you can't afford to tip then don't go to a sit down restaurant.

I do normally tip 20% for good service. However, the problem of tipping should not be laid to rest at the feet of the patrons who pay $8-12 for appetizers and $15-24 for entrees (that's at a regular chain restaurant like Applebee's, etc.) If the restaurants want wait staff but don't want to pay a normal hourly wage, they should include a minimum 15% tip fee in the bill for all tables and state so on the menu, adding that additional tips for excellent service are appreciated.

hfurjiskkr5 - i used to be a server, and just fyi, 5 tables and hour @ 4 dollar tips, DOES equal $20 per hour BUT sometimes your shifts are only given to you in couple hour intervals. Not to mention, you may only have enough customers to fill your tables twice in that day. It really is important to tip accordingly, and to not under tip, even if you think it was poor service. Some people consider being out of something, or food taking too long, a servers fault. Sometimes its out of our control.

In this economy I spent a year looking for a job in my field, but because I have experience in restaurants (the only way I payed for college and my graduates) a serving job was all I could get. I was fresh out of school and no one in my field would take me. That being said everyone should tip, because if there were no servers so much for eating out.

1) The restaurant is stiffing you. Yes, some people don't tip because they are given the choice, and they're horrible people. But if you don't make the NORMAL minimum wage then you must be paid the difference between that wage and $2.13 by your employer BY LAW.
2) The restaurant could auto-gratuity. Going after the restaurant is much easier than going after the masses. Mailmen give us service, but we don't tip them, and that's the industry's fault.

I use fuel (usually 100 miles a day) everyday to bring people hot meals and i couldn't tell you how many times i've wanted to rip their damn heads off!!! On another note, I have visited a restaurant that has a "no tipping" policy. Apparently they pay their workers at least the "standard' minimum wage. Many of their waiters are even nicer than a lot of waiters I've dealt with in restaurants where you are expected to tip.

This is a good video. I do feel, however, that some servers have a sense of entitlement. If you give crappy service, you don't deserve a tip (I mean 0%). However, if the service is decent, good, or excellent, a tip should be offered accordingly.
Think about the 100% commission salesperson, though. You visit their store, waste their time, then go buy somewhere or something else. These people are making $0 per hour. That's a lot worse than $2 an hour...

There are some sales jobs that may give you a draw against your commission to stay afloat, but if you don't sell, you owe your job money. Next time you waste a salesperson's time by going into a business and not purchasing anything- how about you give them a "tip"?

I think a very important thing to remember is that when you get your bill, that bill is for the food, but you havent paid for the service. If you don't want to tip, order your food to-go. A tip is based on service, which means you pay for the service. No one deserves the service you recieve at a restaraunt, thats why you have to pay extra for it. It's the same concept of when you take your car to the mechanic, you pay for the parts, and then you pay for the labor.

I totally feel u on this my a bartender and I get complients that I'm sooo fast and awesome but then they leave like 6 bucks on a 60 dollar tab it bullshit . I've been in this business for 10 yrs people retards .
