you can play anything on any guitar, sure, the stock pickups in a strat may not be great for lots of distortion, but stick the right pups in, maybe lower the strings, (maybe change the gauge) and whay not?
Using single coil pickups for heavy distortion metal is a terrible idea, thats why many use humbuckers and buy guitars such as les pauls or sg's for harder rock.
@volcom1722 Never heard of people having different preferences. To me most humbuckers sound fat but in a weak way single coils are lean and they've got bit it's all a .matter of opinion
I mean like almost all guitars can do damn near any sound unless you want something very specific. This video is evidence of that. this is especially true when using distortion.
What this video proves is with enough processing, even a pencil can paint a house. There isn't much of the guitar itself on display here, it's all about the fuel which amplified it. 75-80% of a guitar's tone comes from the amp or processor, as the case may be. It always has, it always will.
@Maxx61 I dont know why but i thought about the pencil can paint a house lmao i know its not the point but your house would look so shiny with all that graphite.
@CrazyNachooo I guess the title was meant to draw our attention xD but from the look of this, I see that the stratocaster's a really versatile guitar!
These days there's so much you can do with Pedals and what-not, you can make almost any guitar work. Not slating this guys playing or anything, but I wish people would stop bitching about equipment and just get the best sound they can with what they have; and more importantly HOW you play, not what your playing with.
well, Squier definitely cant do good metal sound. but if u take a real good fender, it will be very nice. for example: marty friedman actually used strat to record some songs on Youthanasia in Megadeth.
This video is so great!!! haha. Every time I'm reading a review of a strat and someone writes "this guitar is good but can't do metal" I realize they are a noob who has no idea what they are talking about and move on to the next review. High gain comes from the amp or a pedal, not the guitar and this video proves that point perfectly. Thanks for posting!
@TalTxD You would need to buy a Korean 80's Squier if you wanted tone like this. I bought a Squier Classic Vibe 50's and i reckon its just as good as the Korean made. Classic Vibe is Chinese made
@jrkfacedkiller did you ever think that i was being sarcastic about him being sarcastic? did you ever think that maybe i was trying to creat some sort of temporal rift that would suck the earth into it and get the earth out of harms way from giant asteroids? thanks asshole you ruined the whole thing thus damning the entire earth.
i think their should have been a question mark at the end of the video title cause fender can do metal as played here and by jim root the guitarist for slipknot
@guitarshreder43 : True, but Jim's was custom made specifically for the genre, fixed bridge and EMGs. You might as well give him an Schecter or ESP, you'd get pretty much the same result in tone. When people say Fender Strats/Teles can't do metal they are refering to the vintage style ones with single-coils and a 6 screw bridge. I say bullshit to that, just look at Yngwie Malmsteen and the guitarist from Jeff Scott Soto! Paul Gilbert even uses single coils in his Ibanez Fireman!
theyre better for metal because you can actually hear the notes youre playing unlike active humbuckers which sound like you put horse blankets over your amp
@rmenga he means like wich pickup did ou used like bridge pickup neck pickup see that switch next to the tone knob? thats the pickup switcher if it is all the way down you are on the bridge pickup
@Bludhoundz8 Nah I don't do Telecasters because the shape of the guitar doesn't agree with me. The top 'hump' always digs into my ribs because it's not contoured like the Stratocaster shape is.
Did you use tube amp or solid state? and what effects did you use? At the moment ive got a solid state one, and cant make the fender sound metal, on the other hand, Les Paul Custom cuts the shit out of the thing :)
@dzava When recording to the computer I use a DigiTech GSP 1101 (rack unit), however when going through an amplifier, I use only solid-state. If you want a Strat to get a metal sound, you'll have to experiment with different pedals. Adding in a very light chorus also helps fatten up the sound a bit.
@MrRaphaelLippi WHERE DID YOU GET THAT FROM? Its pretty naive to think that. Iron Maiden themselves consider themselves a Heavy Metal Band. LOLz FAIL.
@MrRaphaelLippi They were considered part of the New Wave of Heavy Metal. Besides, not all song fro Heavy Metal are actually really Heavy. In fact if you pay attentions to the guitar riffs and bass, they are still playing that really low blues chords.
fender doesn't hide the mistakes or the lack of technique, being able to play various styles in a strat helps you to develop your technique way more than doing it in a ibanez or a Jackson, you gain way more strength in your fingers and arm.
@tsubasa1988 haha! i've been playing a strat for like 5 years..and i got to agree it takes more than to buy a guitar with a specific genre, but to be honest i'm still playing this same guitar 'cus i got a low budget i mean..i can't even work untill next year lol.

I play death metal, thrash and doom on my Strat. I love it 'cause I gotta fight it a little to get the tones I want out of,GET THIS, my fingers! Yes I have to actually use my technique and not the effects or ease of playing an EMG equipped jumbo fretted guitar. I think Strats are awesome for all types of music. They make you "earn" your style.
@mwadevilg Weird way to think, I'm an LP man, and love my Metal, I don't think it has anything to do with 'earing' styles, just more to do with playing what you want to play and what sound you want, I like my Maple/Mohagony, and my passive 'buckers, but hey, if you like single coils and alder, do whatever you want.
@mwadevilg Earn nothing except the fact that VERY few metal guitarist uses Fenders, and even more rare are strats players. John 5 uses Fender tele, but he has EMGs else that he wouldn't metal at all. It's all about the style you play. Fender are intended to Blues, when Schecter, ESP, Jackson, are metal guitars when Fender, PRS (Except for COF guitarist, even that he uses EMGs and ENGL amp), and other guitars in that category are not intended for metal usage..
Hell yes! Except for jazz, strats can NOT do jazz. The Telecaster, on the other hand, oh my god, don't even get me started. bareknucklepickupsDOTcom, Teles, vintage, Blackguard Tele Series, Flat '50, sound clips, Flat '50-Modern Metal. Proof that Teles can also do all types of music, jazz, funk, rock, metal, electronic, orchestral, classical, fusion, alternative, rap, country, hell just about everything that can be called music, even material by Conlon Nancarrow, why not?
@mwadevilg no they dont, the whole point of emg's is for the specific metal style because strats single coiled pickups are too tinny and dont pack enough punch
finger your board as technical as you want, its not going to change the sound of your pickups you moron
Truly amazing!

Any guitar can sound horribly distorted if that's what you want it to do and you have the amp and effects to do it.
It's just that humbuckers (particularly active ones) tend to break up easier than single coils and sound better when you do so.
Having said that, when a tone is that distorted you can bearly hear anything anyway, so the difference is probably pretty minimal.

Metal tone is more to do with amp and effects than the guitar and its pickups.
Generally speaking, the more distortion you get, the less important the tone of your pickups is. As long as they can make a big noise, you're golden.

Basically, you're saying that Strats are hard to play, right? Isn't that usually a bad thing?

@WoWintosh I love playing strats, best one I've played so far was a mim candy a red one... very easy to play, fast neck especially

@mwadevilg

@WoWintosh a strat with bartolinis can do jazz great

@mwadevilg True. I was able to play a lot of Metallica songs with strats. I say was since my fingers can't bend as good as they used to.

@mwadevilg no they dont, the whole point of emg's is for the specific metal style because strats single coiled pickups are too tinny and dont pack enough punch
finger your board as technical as you want, its not going to change the sound of your pickups you moron

Wow...AWESOME!! Do u think that fender stratocaster package for beginners would be good to start out with? It comes with:
-3-tone Stratocaster guitar and 10-watt Squier amp with 10-ft cord
-tremolo bridge
- 3 single-coil pickups paired with a 5-way pickup selector switch; volume and 2 tone controls for wide range of tones
-strings, picks, strap, gigbag, guitar stand, and instructional DVD
Do you think It would be good to start out with? Even to play some pretty hard stuff like Trivium?
