For the first time, the extent of fraud, corruption, and child trafficking in international adoption between Guatemala and the United States has been credibly determined. Thousands of previously-unreleased government documents obtained by investigative journalist Erin Siegal from the U.S. Embassy in Guatemala paint a vivid picture of what, exactly, the U.S. government knew about criminal wrongdoing in adoption, including kidnapping, orphan "laundering," and even the murder of birth mothers.
Louise Melville is telling the harsh truth. Stranger adoption *is* child trafficking. It's tied in with sex trafficking in the fostering system. The global adoption trade nets at least $10 BILLION annually. U.S. officials and media have censored the facts about this worldwide racket for decades. Adoption laws were written by the criminals. Millions of babies have been stolen from young and poor parents in the U.S., Canada, the UK, Australia and NZ alone. Many of us are now experts.
i disgaree completly with international adoption being a last resort i lived in gutemala for five and hallf years international adopts saves these children from a life worse then death .
Any system is subject to corruption. Its sad to say guatemala has been ravished by corruption. As a native of guatemala i emigrated to the U.S in 1989 due to the civil war and all the killings. I am for guatemalan adoption its better to be in the u.s than guatemala. however its not changing anything in guatemala. Just giving very few a second chance at life which is still a positive thing i just wish that the u.s gave a ..but then again over the years they promoted and funded war in my country.
if everybody join that helping adoption of children in guatemela it will be provided that improvement of themselves and adoption children will have browsed the future for their new life from you
I chose Guatemala for international adoption partly because the people and the Mayan culture were all so very beautiful and fascinating, I knew I could honestly tell my child that he should be proud of his heritage. One main reason was that Guatemala was the only country I knew of that DNA tests the child and the birthmother to make sure the child I adopted had truly been relinquished. Further, Guatemala has a foster system, funded by adoption fees, so children are in good care while waiting.
Those solutions aren't realistic at all... Fostering and Local Adoption are not possible in Guatemala in present conditions. There are very few Guatemalan familys with the economic conditions for doing any of this. First there's the need to bring some relief to poverty and lack of education. A real fair trade policy would be a good start.
Good programme! But as the opining statement said "it is huge global business, but open to abuse. But children should not be global business, leave alone abuse...

guatemalan families are very close and they dont give their children in adoption in guatemala the children sre being kidnap and then sold to people from other countries god only knows what people want these children for maids or something else.
Tom DiFilipo of the JCICS is one lousy mouthpiece for international adoption. How dare he LIE about corruption in Russian and Chinese adoption! It's RIFE in both countries.
A former JCICS agency - ROTIA brokered Mathew Mancuso's Russian adoption of a 5 year old girl who he sexually abused - and sold photos of on the internet.
After watching DiFlipo put the agency spin on the international "adoption" industry, it is obvious the JCICS does not care about anybody in the triad.
An enlightening expose`. Thank you. There are many wonderful, legitimate organizations which try to keep families together and overcome poverty; Heifer Project, Women for Women International, Oxfam, FINCA, Accion International, CISPES, MADRE, STITCH, and of course, Save the Children. These organizations need our donations. Children should be with their parents. And parents deserve a livable wage, no matter what country they live in. Thank You.
I support international adoption AND helping people of all nations out of poverty. I strongly disagree with th enotion that children belong with their families just because of biological relation. Sometimes children are born into families that have abusive or addicted members, or have no way to provide for the child. If a mother decides that the greatest act of love is to relinquish her child for adoption to a family that can give him everything, including love, who should judge her? Unicef?
Liz, that depends on how you define "parent." In my family, the parents are the people who love the children unconditionally, provide for all their needs, take care of them lovingly, support them in their growth, development, well-being every day with a life-long commitment. Parenting is so much more than biology. However, I do support some of what you wrote. Our family sends donations to a legitimate humanitarian aid organization that directly helps Guatemalan families.
There is no qualification required to have children - EXCEPT for adoption. Adoptive parents must legally prove that they are qualified. Their medical, tax, criminal, driving, mental health/therapy, employment, education, and marriage records are all inspected and verified. Their fingerprints are checked by state and federal governments. Community members and relatives must submit references directly to the agency. A licensed social worker does a study. Parenting classes are required.
it sounds terryfing,but it's not...it's easy,they don't require you be rich,yes you take fingerprints,about 3 references,it's not that big of a deal,actually kind of exciting..
@jtixtlan Adopters and pseudo-experts who traffic children can define yourselves as saints, but you do NOT define natural parents and our children. You dehumanize us. Only we define ourselves. We're speaking for ourselves all over the world. Many of us are professionals and adoption experts. We see through your fog of propaganda. Most adopted babies were taken by fraud and coercion. They're at much higher risk of being abused and killed by adopters than by their natural parents.
@asynkronos I'm sorry you feel that way, and I realize something must have happened for you to have such harsh, sweeping judgement for all adopters. I've read about bad things happening to children in struggling countries. It is heartbreaking. I only know myself. I already had a child to whom I gave birth. We had enough love and resources for another child, so we decided to adopt a child out of poverty. We went through proper methods. We love our son and have great respect for his birthmother.
