I had sleep apnea and i went for reconstructive air way. I am wondering this is genetic cause my son at 4 years old does the same thing like this video... I dont know if he has to go to surgery at this age
I've had many sleepless nights due to this, including tonight and for 5 years I've been going to doctor asking help and they keep on ignoring me, saying she'll grow out of it. For some reason I just wanted to see anyone else with this problem so I can compare if I am over reacting as they say, well I am not my little one breaths exactly the same. :(
You are amazing. Thank you for posting this video. I wish I'd had it when my son was little. He had his tonsils and adenoids removed at two and is alive and well today.... but it was a very scary and sleepless time. But, if I'd known to move his jaw like you did with your little blessing, he may not have had to fight so hard. - One question, with your little bundle of joy, does a pacifier help? How long before you need to adjust his airway again?
Yes Eli is much better. I knew he was going to have the tonsils and adenoids removed by the time I took this video. A month later we had the surgery, and he now sleeps like a lamb.. he is restful, his runny nose is gone, and he is quiet when he sleeps.. no more snoring.
to one one who has a child with symptoms like Eli - go to a pediatric ENT and have the child diagnosed. The surgery is easy, the kids bounce right back, and their entire life with transform once they can start sleeping!!!
this video is the identical problem my 1 year old daughter has yet trying to get an ENT consultant to see her any sooner is becoming a real problem i'm so thankful that this breathing isn't not just my daughter thank you so much for posting this
Thanks a lot for posting this, my kid is having the tonsils and adenoids surgery coming up this week, we are so scared, your posting is encouraging. I am so glad surgery helped your child. As someone else writes, we have also sat up overnight watching over our child's breathing so many nights, at first we did'nt know what to make of it. The sleep study helped us make the decision on surgery. We are hoping things will go well for us too.
P.S. - there were so many nights I would stay awake and hold him up to make sure he was breathing. Its very scary for us parents. Scarier is that the sleep doctor told us to try a CPAP machine for our son first, before surgery. He had a cpap mask for 2 years and kept taking it off at night so we decided to follow up with an ENT who said definitely, they need to come out. I am anxious to see him breathe well for the first time in 12 years. Hope all is going well with Eli. What a cute child.
@catmrs We never did the machine. Our doc just said that she wanted to attempt to wait until Kiersty was 6 years old. She was 2 then, now she is 4 and horribly worse. I had to fight with the doc in order to get the referral. Hoping to get her the surgery soon so she can get better and actually get a good nights sleep. So nervous about everything, but I just want my little one well!!
something else to consider - our ENT doctor also mentioned that if untreated this affects how the face grows and those that wait may see an elongated face in the child because it stimulates something to grow.

This is exactly what my son looked like when he suffered with sleep apnea. We had 2 sleep studies done for him both concluding that he had obstructive sleep apnea. The normal treatment for this is removal of the tonsils and adenoids, followed by another sleep study to see if it cured the apnea. My son (age 12) just had his surgery yesterday and although he is snoring now due to the enlarged uvula (swelling), I am confident he will be better after this! Hard to watch though.
wow that's really bad. my son has sounded like that for ever. he's 9 now and sleep walks. he still sounds like that. maybe i should video take him! thank you for sharing!
Eli had successful surgery a month ago to remove his tonsils and adenoids , and he now is a restful relaxed sleeper.
the difference e is amazing. he breathes quietly through his nose, no longer gasping for air through his mouth. he does not toss and thrash around anymore. it is a pleasrue to see him sleep.
Thanks for your reply Sharon. Im taking my daughter to see the Dr on Friday so hopefully she will have investigations done. Good luck with the surgery. I am a homeopath and i will be taking my daughter to see her homeopath on Saturday. Homeopathy can also be really effective for children. Best Wishes
Hi. My daughter started doing this about 6 weeks ago - her breathing is exactly the same as this. She holds her breath too. She is 4 and a half. Have you had a diagnosis of sleep apnea and do you know what can be done?
I recommend you discuss your observations with your pediatrician, and take your daughter to an ENT doctor (ear nose and throat). your pediatrician or ENT can recommend a sleep study to confirm the diagnosis of sleep apnea. We had a sleep study done for my son and he fell in the SEVERE range. In a few weeks we are getting his tonsils and adenoids removed in a surgical procedure. This should most likely clear up the apnea, constant runny nose, and recurrent ear infections. Good luck.
thank you so much for posing this. i would like to know what happened after the surgery? i can see some fat under his chin i think this plays a part too. pleas take him for an other sleep test even after surgery. thank you

I believe sleep apnea is genetic or runs in families.

I'm so glad he's doing better. I have severe sleep apnea myself (use CPAP now). I'm starting to wonder if my son doesn't have a mild form of it.
