Been together since they were kids, they must have had there up and downs like most folks growing up,and yes all good things come to an end one way or another, they were unique and were very good,my bro was into them in the early 80s,me the last 10 years,i thought they got better with age, them and their music.thanks for the music and the memories,REM.great last album by the way.
out of curiosity, i'm not a native english speaker, was REM's songs ever supposed to make sense, or is it mostly gibberish word mish mash. I never though they'd made much sense, but that's not to say it doesn't..
@doped1 early rem albums are notorious for inaudable and cryptic lryics but they are (coindidentally or not) the best, the aptly titled murmur to document. modern rem sounds much more obviously politically motivated to me but for this song you have to have heard accalerate's houston where that song referanced katriona this is a followup and a return to the city. you can hear the similaraties
I like this song, however, you can't deny that it's "Sing for the Submarine" (from Accelerate) twin sibling. Even some of the words are similar at one part. Great CD though.
This is on par with Automatic for the people, wich i found to be the first album of any kind of music with a whole cd with not a single average or bad song.

Una hermosa cancion, nos encanta su lirica y nos sentimos muy identificados con ella.ES REM,QUE MAS PODEMOS DECIR?Stefania y Ramiro de Atlantida,Uruguay.
the good of this world AND man's intentions are complete decay you were created for perfection only in the throne room of your creator can you attain it He loves you He repares the scars He rebuilds the cities man's intentions are filled with no good but that which reflects the Glory of Your First love
The more I listen to this song the more I feel touched with a knot in my throat. Mike Stipe is a great poet besides a powerful rocker...his voice is dark and warm so that every concept and word is underlined with strenght. The most genial phrase is the one referred to "Houston", as other people already said, "the storm didn't kill me, the government changed". I'm looking forward to buy the new album. Saluti dall'Italia...
The melodic manner with which the music coalesces with Stipe's incredible singing is unrivaled. That damn mandolin touches my cerebral senses in places I never knew existed. This is music. Welcome back REM - we missed you!!
@cabelshiraz because it's been played by U2, Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney, Sting, Prince, Michael Jackson, The Rolling Stones, Aerosmith. Tom Petty, & The Who. Who is missing from this exclusive list? Why have they been overlooked?
@tyzojp Most Americans do. It's the largest tv audience of the year. The Super Bowl halftime show is the biggest fucking stage to be on. That's why. REM deserves to be up on that stage.
don't get me wrong but u just got what i hate bout your country. superbowl? how could you ever think of such a shit while listening to this bad ass tune? nothing in common...is this all bout football and burgers?
@buugar Because REM is one of the best bands of all time and they deserve more attention in the United States. If anybody deserves to be on the biggest stage in America, it's REM. U2's played it. Green Day has too. Paul McCartney, Michael Jackson, The Rolling Stones, Bruce, The Who. Who is missing from this great list????? Exactly, REM.
I agree. It's funny because I was just thinking the same thought this morning and then I saw this post. It is only right that REM gets a chance to do this. I have followed them since the beginning and they will always be on my favorite bands list.
You are absolutely correct. I think the Prince show was probably the best halftime show ever. I was a big Prince fan back in the day and I was hoping his show at the bowl would show everyone what a great performer he is and he did exactly that. Other bands I think deserve a shot at playing the bowl are COLDPLAY and MUSE. Also, LIVE if they ever decide to get back together again. I saw them about 10 times over the years and their shows always are great crowd pleasers.
I hated this song when I first heard it but it's been growing on me. This happens each time R.E.M. releases a new album. One great thing about their music is you often have to invest some time, occasionally dozens of re-plays until you "get it". The pay off is much more rewarding than the instantly catchy, radio friendly crap, that the legions of suburban American zombies seem to enjoy feeding on. The radio stations would go out of business if the had to play legitimate music like this!
@rollthebones18: I was thinking the same thing about this one. It's "Houston Part II." Especially with the "storm didn't kill me, the government changed" line. But I agree, I think it works well. Eagerly awaiting the release of this album. I thought Accelerate was REM's best album since Automatic, but it seems like Collapse picks up where Accelerate left off, but adds the dimension and depth that Accelerate was missing. This will be their best record in 20 years. Can't wait!
The start of the song reminds me a lot of the start of Disappear, which isn't a bad thing since Reveal was a great album. Looking forward to this one!
These guys must hang out with the two angels from Wings of Desire and Morrissey, partly of this world, partly not, they always offer unique, interesting perspectives. Thank you for the beauty and the wisdom you've provided over the years. Amen
The best song I've heard so far. REM never cease to amaze me, they continue to produce the most amazing music. Anyone that knocks them and says they haven't been the same since Berry left, or since Automatic are talkng rubbish. REM evolve and thats why I love them. REM could probably just fart on an album and it would still sound great.
Im pretty sure he is talking about how the music industry has been decaying (erasing) over the past few years and that it pains his heart to hear people like justin beiber and hannah montana try and pass their crap off as music.
Good song, the melody of the mandolin is wonderful, the words are brilliant, but the chorus is too simple. Good, but they can do better. I prefer 'Mine smell like honey' and 'uberlin', which has just been published on youtube
Lets just say I go back to the Begin. I dont like talking time and age. The only Album post IRS that I would and do own is Monster, but I wasn't ready for this song to be over. I really enjoyed the phrasing. I always want the best for them, even when they ain't reaching me.
I change my mind, its a very good song.
