will you check my vid :)

  • The second riff you did would be a very fancy way to start "Let it Be", or "Imagine", or "When I'm 64 (in the Original key)", its brill! :D

    Thanks so much :D

  • @scotplane You're right, I hadn't thought of that, thanks!

  • Hi John thanx for the posting, ive learned so much from your videos that i feel like an half decent piano player now. If you get time could you do a jazzy type video tutorial, maybe the full song to the first riff you play, it sounds cool, would love to be able to play the whole thing.

    Paul

  • @purpleduke77 Yes - I think I've had that song tutorial on my editing block for over a year now. It's been recorded, just need to get it annotated and posted.

  • @pianojohn113 Awesome news! Im a really huge Glenn Miller fan and your video tutorials are absolutely brilliant.. i have also become a semi decent pianist just from watching them! Id love to see you do a tutorial on Sunrise Serenade as you play it pretty sweet here! Lets get it posted! haha thanks

  • @Calzonii09 It is posted. Check his channel.

  • @pianojohn113 awesome! I'm in agreement with purpleduke77, a song tutorial for that whole first song would be great! (Also, what is the name of the song?) Thanks for posting this video, I've played piano for a while (10 years) now, and jazz is something I never really learned, but recently I've fallen in love with it and have wanted to learn it for quite some time now.

  • @idogtv The one you're referring to is "Sunrise Serenade," and I'll have it up very soon. Glad you enjoyed this vid!

  • What is the name of the song from the first jazz riff? The one you showed us the ending to?

  • @dylanchillin77 That's "Sunrise Serenade."

  • good teacher...

  • Very nice. You even get comments that are classy.

  • I really like this kind of video cos it demonstrates little tricks and runs that sound incredibly impressive, but are easy to learn. When you're having problems getting the big things right, it's good to take time out and learn something like this. So thanks for a really fun interlude.

  • @playpianowell Glad you liked it, thanks. Sometimes the simple stuff can be the most rewarding pieces to play, I think.

  • That jazz lick in the first part was amazing! Does anyone know the name of the piece of at least the composer? Id love to hear more where it came from!

  • @Canuck922 That's called "Sunrise Serenade," performed by several big bands (Glenn Miller's was most famous). I'll have a tutorial posted on it very soon.

  • @pianojohn113

Thank you for all your great tutorials!

I was just wondering if you know approximately how long before your full tutorial on "Sunrise Serenade" will be uploaded to you channel?

    You are an awesome pianoplayer!

  • @pantera1800 I was supposed to post it last week, but was unable to clear the time to edit it.. I recorded it several months ago, which shows you how far behind I am on all of these.. :-)

  • Great tutorial, and well done for mentioning Claude Bolling - an incredible pianist that remarkably few people have ever heard of.

Also, I'm glad somebody else talks about the ins and outs of pedalling - it mystifies so many people, yet it's so easy. Keep up the good work!

  • @billhiltonbiz Glad you liked it. Claude Bolling has been a big influnce on my style over the years.

  • @billhiltonbiz oh shut up im sure things are easy for others and hard for you, stuck up ass

  • @johntsunami Hi John - I'm sorry if my comment offended you, because I certainly didn't intend to offend anyone. You're right: are indeed many, many things which are easy for others and hard for me - I should have thought that would have gone without saying.

With that in mind, do you think that calling me a "stuck up ass" is maybe just a tiny bit harsh...?

  • @billhiltonbiz yea it was, peace treaty

  • @johntsunami Signed ;)

  • I agree with some of the other people who commented on this: it would be great to have a tutorial for the whole thing.

  • Db????

  • John. You are the greatest piano tutorial teacher/person on youtube. can you please please please post a tutorial on part one of this song

  • @jetsfan132435 Thanks, I appreciate it. Yes, in fact I did record that video a few months ago, and will try to post it ASAP. Just needs a couple of edits.

  • Wow!

  • Can anyone tell me what this piece is called? I've heard it often as background to various videos.. watch?v=6VfFKNCxu5U

  • thanks man!! you are the best! your lessons are really easy to understand and really helpful; i've been trying to find a good jazz lesson all over but i haven't been able to until now. thanks again, keep it up!

  • Love your mellow sound. All on the same page musically. Love it when it all comes together like this.

  • Wow! I was just surfing around and stumbled onto your video's. I play. and have played since early childhood. and, I just wanted to say good job! very comprehensible . Thanks for the tips.

  • Awesome. After viewing and learning from your videos now for almost 6 months, I have gained a considerable repertoire. Thank you very much for taking precious time to help us. Three Cheers for John. Hip Hip Hooray!

  • Do you think you could do some jazz song tutorials? I would love to expand to more jazz oriented tunes. And also, are you going to do anymore christmas songs in time for the holidays? Thanks!

  • @elrais2 Yes, my plan currently is to do both Christmas songs and some more jazz stuff.. Whether or not that will happen is another story, but I'm hoping!

  • hey , you are simply great , id like you to listen this shit ... is mine , jejeje LOOK PLEASEwww.youtube.com/watch?v=DoJF3ZA7Z7Q

  • @dutchkollman Whatever you call it, I never thought about that. Honestly!

  • @dutchkollman Never said that.

  • muy bueno! a favoritos! ;)

  • Wow! Your accent remind me some old TV speaker :-)

And hey, nice to see some people know Claude Bolling around here!

  • @mathieuemi666 Claude Bolling fans are always welcome here. :-)

  • very, very handy

  • All your piano ideas sound "saloon-like"... Really old and nice! Great lession, great piano bits, great teacher!

  • @noconfig Must be the result of my ragtime piano days! Glad you liked the video, thanks. :-)

  • @pianojohn113 Ragtime... the correct attribute.

  • Thank you a ton for this!

I have an old (abt. 100 yrs I think) upright piano, ugly as sin but sounds great. My laptop sits right on top, the display angles perfectly so I can watch while I sit at the piano. The cordless mouse sits to my left so I can control the video.

Your explanation of what you are doing is excellent. The notes superimposed on the keyboard make a huge difference as well.

I've been goofing around with piano for years... your videos are encouraging me to do more! Grazie!

  • Would you consider doing a tutorial for Charlie Brown Thanksgivings closing theme. Thank You

  • Great Chord progression in the key of Ab I think. Anyway you could show us how that is done in the key of C. Many thanks for sharing your great talent.

  • @pianojohn113 No problem. Looking forward to seeing it. (:

  • Hey John, would you consider doing a tutorial for the Piano version of "In the Mood" by Glenn Miller? Thanks. (:

  • Where can I find some sheet music for the version of Sunrise Serenade that you are playing? The only version I can find does not have any of the chords you play in this video, it's mostly single notes in the right hand.

  • BEST YOUTUBE PIANO TEACHER EVER

  • John I'm begging please do the sunset serenade tutorial up. I've recorded you playin it saying it me!! I long for it to actually be me xx cheers dude x

  • Thanks. Your videos are very informative and tutorial that seems to pique musical interest whether novice or pro, Great Job!

  • Did you make the video for that part at the beginning that the 'tag' goes at the end of? If so, what's it called? Thanks :)

  • That's a song called "Sunrise Serenade," and I have not yet made the video for it.. I'll try to do it soon. :-)

  • @pianojohn11 I would love to see a tutorial for Sunrise Serenade as well

  • @pianojohn113 please do a tutorial for Sunrise Serenade :D

  • I would be interested in knowing what you think of my bands video and music attached in responses. Thanks.

  • you are great!! :)

    i learnd alotttt

  • Cool! Glad you liked it.

  • Any chance that main part before the tag will be coming to us sometime soon? I'm dying to learn this whole thing! You're the best John!!

  • Absolutely.. I just have to remember to do it the next time I'm recording videos. If I had an assistant to remind me, it would probably already have been done by now, lol.

  • Yes please, please do it

  • This is excellent! The first chord progression reminds me of Cruella DeVil.

  • Very similar, you're right!

  • Wonderful! Makes me want to practice.

  • lol, thanks!

  • So, I take it that you're in the process of filming it then? This video is truly insightful, well done! The progressions are actually pretty straightforward after some knowledgeable thinking. :D I hope to try the new song!

  • I haven't started the video yet, but I'll have it posted eventually.. soon, I hope. Glad you liked it, though!

  • reaaally cool :D Do you have the video explaining the whole first riff ?

  • I don't have it done yet, but since so many people have asked for it, I should have it up fairly soon.

  • The first one's reeaaally nice. Have you got the notes of the whole song scanned or something?

  • Thanks! I don't have the notes on a sheet, but many people have asked for that one so it should be coming up on a separate tutorial soon.

  • Awesome I look forward to it all your videos are helpful as they've really helped me heaps :D

  • This is great thanks a lot.

  • Glad you liked it!

  • @jacobdarcyjohnson i think the poor-ish audio quality of the vid is messing you up.

  • The piano is exactly in tune. Your hearing is flat.

  • You have to teach us the Sunrise Serenade song!!! I have learned so much from you... thanks!!!!!

  • the main part sounds very ragtime, not the part being taught though

  • nice, kinda retro fashion sound

  • Yes, you're right, kind of a '60s sound to it.

  • wow

  • Hello, When do you think you will be putting up the first song that you played?

  • Yep, i concur, i like the begining!

  • Sunrise Serenade! Nice!

  • so is there a tutorial to the whole song(1st one)??

  • you've yaught me like three new songs! Im subscribing! :]

  • Great! Thanks for watching.

  • Hey John, I see that you have a book at the top of the screen? IS that the sheet music for that song? If it is, what is it and where did you get it? Please respond.

  • That's not the sheet music, I believe it's notes on the previous song that I'd left on the piano. Still looking for the sheets for that first song!

  • would you be able to post a video of you simply playing that song ?

I cant find a similar version and I love the way you play it xD

  • Yes, I'll try to remember to do that on one of the upcoming sets. :-)

  • Great. Please i beg you to make a tutorial for the whole song. It sounds so awesome.

  • you should do tutorials on a whole jazz song :D

  • I agree. This jazz song is amazing!!

  • Hey have you posted the entire tutorial for this song, its awesome. If so whats the name ??

  • HAve not yet, but will try to do one on the current session, time permitting.

The song is called "Sunrise Serenade" and it's from the mid-1940s.. Glenn Miller tune.. great song.

  • Very cool stuff, pianojohn! I am looking forward to watching the other videos.

Excuse my curiosity, but how do you set up the camera to view over your shoulder like that?

  • Thanks, glad you liked it!

I have a small stand that sits slightly behind and over the piano, and I fit the camera in a slot right over the keyboard. It works pretty well unless I have to move the camera one way or another.. then it's a bit of a chore.

  • Appreciate your answering me. I just subscribed to your channel. Lots of useful lessons - and for free! Hard to believe! Thank you!

  • You are very good. I love it, jazz is the coolest kind of music!!

  • Amazing! Thank you very much for all these great tutorials.

  • BRAVO!

  • Thank you .....more jazz please.....lol...need more

  • great job as usual :)

  • What you do on the piano is just amazing!!!!

Thanks a lot for posting and teaching!!

    Here's my reward:

The first song you're playing here is a part of the "sunrise serenade" by (you guessed it) Glenn Miller! It's not the main theme of the song, but if you listen to the original recording you'll here the melody after a minute or so.

Took me a while to find out ;-)

Now I can't wait for the tutorial of the complete song!!!!

  • THAT'S what it was! Sunrise Serenade.. thanks, I could not remember the name, and I've played it for years.

I played that section as part of a medley of '40s songs.. now I have to go back and re-learn the rest of it! :-)

  • Hi, I love the Sunrise Serenade bit, I know you have got 5 millions requests, but if you had the chance to post a tutorial for the whole bit you play there, I am sure we would all love you even more! Not being pushy, just a suggestion. Thanks for all the tutorials you posted so far, I am slowly working thru them.

  • Comment removed

  • thanks so much!please let me know when you put up a tutorial for the whole song you mentioned in the beginning.,would love to learn it!

    saludos

  • OH MY GOD!

I am a 21yr old Jazz Piano Player and I am learning stuff from you sir!

Thank you SO MUCH! cant wait for more Jazz tips and trick from you

  • You're a legend!!! You make even the most ridiculous piano players like me sound good.

  • lol, thanks! I'm glad the vids are helpful. Have fun!

  • I subbed you, and soon as I be rich, I'll send you a lotta dow

    God bless you man!

  • In 0:53 he says "I'll show you how to play the whole thing in another video when I have more time". Has anyone found any video? That song is awesome!

  • i love this kind of jazz

    perfect

  • i'm trying to do some of these on guitar, and this one is extremely difficult, it's funny....

  • That's understandable... the key something is in on the guitar can make a massive difference in difficulty, compared to piano, where pretty much uniform difficulty (just a bit of a headache when you read something in, say, F sharp major).

  • hey by anychance do u know how to play the dun dun duuuuuuuunnn sort of tune that you hear in panto and shows when something bad is about to happen

  • LOL!! I know exactly what you're talking about. I am always doing that to people as I play air piano.

  • lol well its more like duh duh duuuuuuuuuuh

  • do bennie and the jets!

    love that song

and it's not fair that you're so good!! lol

i wish i could play like you...

  • your amazing!

  • whats the name o the first song?

  • Read the other posts. It's Sunrise Serenade.

  • can someone tell me what key these riffs are in?

  • Ab Major.

The chord breakdown would be something like:

    B7+9, Bb7+9

    Em7+9, Eb7

    Db9-6 /Eb*, Ab6

*Can be interpreted alternately, but seems to make the most sense [IV-I]

  • thanks. i needed to learn some jazz-type stuff.

  • Sounds like the song from 101 Dalmations about Corella DeVille. I could be completely off, but that's what it reminds me of.

  • lol

  • i was thinking the samething!

  • You are completely awsome! Thank's so much! You do a great job and I really appreciate your vids. Looking forward to learning learning learning. Just what I was looking for!

  • Thanks for all the videos, you rock!

Can you post the rest of Sunrise Serenade please? Such a pretty song!

Do you ever do any Dave Brubeck stuff like Blue Rondo A la Turk maybe? That would be sweet to learn.

    Thank!

  • hey, thank you so much for all the videos-

so far i've learned the charlie brown christmas song, and now i'm doin this bit.

i reaaaaaaaalllllly cant wait till you post the wole jazz part....PLEASE post it! i love how it sounds...anyway, i love your videos. thanks. =)

  • This sounds like a George Gershwin song.I could be wrong.

  • Wow man nice video!

  • thanks mate

  • No problem, glad to do it for you.

  • Thanks!

  • Make some more!!!! lol

    great job as usual :)

What's the name of the first song you played ?

  • Thanks, glad you liked it!

The first song... I knew someone would ask me, and I cannot remember the name!! Maybe someone can refresh me on that one. It's from the 1940s, a big band tune, and I think Glenn Miller or Tommy Dorsey may have played it. It was pretty popular in its day.

If I think of it, I'll post it up here!

  • Can u do a beginners guide to pachebols canon in d? i got imagine n let it be down. thanks for the tutoring. im finally playing the digital piano i bought two years ago. its fun playing!

  • Glad you're having fun with it, that's the idea! I'll try to find the canon in D on sheet music somewhere.. I haven't played it in years.

  • That's another great song, and one I'd like to do a tutorial for.. I need to play it a little more, though, as I haven't really learned that one all the way through.

  • Really nice, i heard a bit of "fixing a hole" in there around 2:58

  • I hadn't noticed that... I'll have to listen again. Must be that Beatles influence again!
